Ehm, hello, BHVR, just admit you didn't want to do that for a free skin.
So, I was watching last Q&A section and I stumbled upon this:
https://www.twitch.tv/videos/737094054 (52:35)
They are saying, that the dynamic skin feature, suggested by the Never Stop Slashing creator was wanted, but they were unable to do that because of "technical limitations".
A dynamic skins feature.
A skin that would change the way it looks during the game when certain events happen.
A skin that changes its model when killer does something.
does that sound familiar to you?
Yeah, right, Oni. Whose EVERY body and mask skin is DYNAMIC and changes its ENTIRE model when Oni enters his ability.
Why does the Oni have that feature then, if you are unable to implement it because of "technical limitations"? Or maybe making the mask change TEXTURES is ENTIRELY different from replacing the ENTIRE MODEL of a character?
What technical limitation didn't allow you to do the same with Legion?
Or the potato code is so bad, that you were unable to implement an ALREADY EXISTING feature for the other killer?

I seriously doubt they couldn't do it. But you're right i'd rather them just be honest instead of telling a lie no one is going to believe
61 -
It doesn't seem imposible to replace mask textures in certain scenarios.
7 -
I would guess it's because the devs designed Oni with that feature in mind so maybe it would be too difficult to do on other killers?
Also,it's not because the skin is free.Look at their legendary skins. They are 15$ and weren't able to add anything special to them aswell.
Also also, they took like 3 or 4 years to figure out a way to make the hood and jacket from Bunny Feng work.
So why should anyone of you be surprised that they couldn't do this feature for that legion skin?
4 -
It's just laziness, it's butchered without that face.
The facemask was the sole reason it won, it was a great design, but EVERYONE wanted to see the changing Facemask.
I wonder how the creator feels about it.
38 -
It's 100% on-brand for BHVR to let something win that they have no intention of actually implementing.
2 -
The Devs said "we consulted the creator and they were fine with it" although the creator said it felt bland and unfinished on twitter without it. And by "consult" i point to a mod post a while ago for i think a claud skin a mod said "bhvr is allowed to alter fanmade skins as they want before they put them in the game". But it is consulting so i guess they didnt lie lol.
5 -
Yeah, the modifications I understand, they can mod it how they want.
I bet they showed him the sketches before what they posted on Twitter, it was a huge disappointment.
2 -
No the facemask wasn't the sole reason it won - the designers chose the skin based on many factors and were aware of what they could/couldn't do with it when they chose the winning design.
I'm not going to comment on why this isn't being implemented, but I don't want false information spread.
6 -
You don't have to disclose anything, really. It's just disappointing that its main "BAM!" feature isn't being implemented.
It's like selling Neon Lights but finding out you bought Energy Saving Fluorescent Pipe Lights.
43 -
that don't even glow...
14 -
Yeah they could at least be honest about the reason.
Legion's outfit will probably, like Tome 2, be on the free track of the next tome, which means there's zero profit being made off of its sales.
Technical limitations, which as you've said have been disproven by previously implemented characters, is not the same as "it isn't worth the time nor effort as there will be no payout from making it good."
6 -
Well, to be honest, there still is a possibility that "changing texture when stunned/doing X" is different when "changing model when in X", but I highly doubt it.
0 -
We know the skin wasn't only chosen because of the mask. An outfit is good when it is OVERALL good and a good combination. So we knew that one already.
So all you said was basically they knew they couldn't do it from the start. Great.
Good. Job.

Just going to leave this here since Reddit doesn't allow you to copy and paste -

This made me chuckle more than it should've.

Oni’s model doesn’t really change. He grabs another weapon (Huntress - hatchet?) and has flames kind of added around his head/eyes.
so you’re asking the devs to make a skin specific feature on a killer model that doesn’t do that?
I don’t know how to program or how to design. I do know that just because someone in design comes up with an idea, it doesn’t mean it can magically just happen with “programming.” If you know how to do it, perhaps share it with the devs? Maybe there’s a reason...
2 -
I think people are talking about the horns that are added to his head, I'm sure there's other small details but I can't remember them.
4 -
Yeah it's pretty clearly a "this would take up too many resources" response. The game has SO MANY bugs so I'm fine with them not spending time on this cosmetic if it means other things will be tweaked instead. More than likely the artists/programmers that could do it are working on the GFX overhaul. It's weird that they deliberately chose the winners, but left out Claudette's thong and Legion's face change. Maybe the person/people choosing the winners didn't realize the limitations.
2 -
You nailed it.
11 -
Oni has 2 different models for "normal" and "demon" modes.
3 -
Sorry Mandy, but It's definitely possible to do that. Yandere dev added a guy with special glasses that can express his emotions at any moment. Even the newbie developer can do that.
9 -
Yes, he’s holding a different weapon and has flames around his eyes/head. What else changes?
0 -
Most noticable:
Horns become longer
Armor pieces either change/get new particles
8 -
I'm waiting for the dev's response then I'll make minds.
0 -
Didn’t know that. Thanks. So wouldnt they have to rework Legion as a whole? What’s needed to do that skin specific?
0 -
I am very disappointed that Legions mask doesn't change, I honestly said BS when they said it wouldn't change because that has already been possible and implemented into the game before, but I guess it's better to tell us this now rather than later when its released.
3 -
Why doesn’t it surprise me that all the uproar is over a Legion cosmetic. Its funny hes such broken bad design yet has the most diehard fanboys on reddit.
You can’t compare this to Oni. Oni was created from the ground up to transform.
As far as I remember Spirit is the only killer in the game who changes facial animations and thats done on a cycle I think, not based on context of whats happening in the game. Theres no info on whether this cosmetic would change animations or just be a texture swap but either way it takes time and money to create it and I dont think many companies would be doing that for a one-off skin.
1 -
Damn I just looked at the concept arts and boy would this legion skin be good to make killer emotes. 😁😭😡😝 1 to 4 would have been real nice.
4 -
I mean, Oni has the ability to change parts of the model and whatnot baked into his design from the start. This is just a guess with no real basis behind it, but I imagine giving a skin the power to change design contextually would be something that would require change the programming on a Killer to allow such a thing without breaking how it functions with every other skin (including default).
0 -
You are comparing apples to oranges at that point.
2 -
I mean it'll either could work on just that one piece or make it like that (very simple and perhaps incorrect, since I'm not a programmer):
Put in Oni's dynamic skins code in Legion
On NSS skin: When X, then change Y to Z (Y - normal expression, Z - new expression)
On any other skin: When X, then change Y to Y.
0 -
Nope. That's basically the same thing.
1 -
I highly doubt it's that simple since Legion does not function like Oni.
1 -
Yandere dev, using a completely different engine, set of assets, character models, coding language, and base to work with, could create something therefore bhvr, with their different engine, assets, models, language, and base, should be able to do the same?
4 -
BHVR should do even better since they have more expierience and more powerful tools for feature to create than an one modest programmer with the help of volunteers. Like really what's the point of being creative if these kind of ideas are gonna be scrapped anyway. Lame.
2 -
Guys, it's a freaking model, all models function the same. Stop making excuses for the devs. They literally can make 4 different models internally(with one expression each) and switch between them at random intervals or depending on some conditions(for example if the killer misses a swing he gets a sad face).
They aren't programming the next mission into space, come on.
19 -
I mean, adding a mask that changes expressions is high school level programming..
The algorithm is very, VERY simple.. the game checks if the player uses said mask, and just displays a different animation on each event, like pallet stuns.
My bet is that they are just too lazy to add new mask models, especially since the skin will be free anyway.
9 -
I agree with that statement. Like no disrespect to the creator of the claud cosmetic but I don't understand why BHVR chose that one when there were so many better picks.
Like it's a great cosmetic and the artwork is brilliant but compared to the other ones that were shown it just feels bland and the devs changed it too so it doesn't even resemble the original artwork.
And yeah I bet the reason why the legion cosmetic creator said he was cool with it was because he probably thought if he started drama the devs probably would end up scrapping it and choose another one :/
3 -
Will the outfit be given out or will it be on the free rift?
0 -
This is because oni doesn't have 2 textures. They use particles and overlays to make such an effect, unless im missing something.
0 -
Its not hard to program transitions spirit does it naturally all the time. Take that natural and turn it into a fixed"hey if this happens then the mask changes to this" honestly id love if legion transitioned naturally like spirit and oni like in ff he gets a different mask look and when hes hit by a pallet because how some of the killers act like getting hit by a pallet is getting sledgehammered lol.
1 -
Spirit doesn't have any texture transitions. Her model shifts, and her sword (if that's what you're referring to) is done via masking if it's not outright a prop that's hidden under the map.
0 -
I'm no expert but it could be done with several layers close to each other over the face. During different animations just move the one layer forwards slightly and the other layer back, or hide one and unhide the other. If you can make horns and swords disappear and appear, and facial expressions change, you can make slightly different faces swap.
1 -
But they don't, though. Oni's model changes as a result of his power, so he had that functionality built into him from the start. A Killer such as Legion did not.
Like I said, I doubt it's that simple. Explaining it in layman's terms doesn't actually mean it is simple.
3 -
The face changing legion mask could be implemented by making the mask itself "blank" and using the Oni flames tech to draw the face into different expressions, i.e. FF mode, just after hooking, getting stunned, etc. Obviously the graphic would be much smaller and not as "transformational" as the Oni.
0 -
Oni doesn't get just extra particles when he enters his ability. his model also changes, though just slightly
1 -
I do not believe that is true. If it is true, then the changes are so subtle that it wouldn't be worth the tech to change the model at all, since it's not noticeable.
0 -
Watch any Oni's skins render to see yourself or check this thread to see a link for one of such renders if you're too lazy to search it yourself.
Spoiler, changes are pretty noticeable, especially on custom skins
2 -
Dude, with all due respect, if you have no clue what you are talking about stop contradicting people that do. The whole "functionality" you keep talking about is this:
if(power activated) SetModel(power_model)
else SetModel(regular_model)
THAT'S IT. Big functionality.
Literally all they have to do for legion is 3 lines of code. Stop acting like it's complicated, it's not. They just don't want to spend their time creating the different animations/models for the masks. It's not about programming it into the game.
12 -
I'm pretty sure it's more of a legal issue, the skin is obviously much like the one from watch dog's 2 the character wrench has that mask, I'm sure they would have to go through so much legalities just to have permission to use it. They probably are just saying it's a technical issue because they don't want to embarrass the guy just my thoughts but his costume is completely original however ,so that's the reason they'll still use his design.
