An Alternative Theory on Matchmaking
Howdy denizens of the Fog!
(TL;DR: Higher skill players can better handle MMR variation, and newer players need more accurate MMR pairing to ensure the future integrity of DBD and prevent bouncing new players away from DBD.)
I've been watching XQC's attempt at playing Huntress, and a thought occurs to me. Despite our current issues with MMR accuracy, I think there may be an easier, but somewhat less accurate fix that may be needed.
While higher MMR players, killer and survivor alike, DO have differing skill levels, I think after a certain point they are all aware of general gameplay mechanics. You can know how pallets are used, what perks generally do, and how the pace of the game goes without explicitly being good at it.
I think a more critical issue (possibly causing newer players to leave) is when MMR fails at the earlier ranks. I admit this isn't an issue that affects me personally given my gameplay experience, but I have gone against at least 2 killers in the last week that have expressed frustration and let me know it was their first killer game and they had no idea what was going on.
Obviously, it's well known that MMR is defective, but under no circumstances should an absolutely new player be placed against me (4+ yrs, Devo 8), and if I were in their position, I likely would not attempt killer again.
Now I have to say I'm not sure what a solution would look like, but I'm thinking it may be wise to evaluate MMR pairing on a curve, with more importance placed on ensuring newer players are more accurately matched up to similar skilled players.
