What are some of your Obscure picks for a DBD Killer and what makes you think they will/won't work?
The title pretty much says it all really, name some of your personal favourite obscure characters that you think can work in DBD, why you think they can work, and why they will probably never coming to DBD as much as you want them to, this isn't limited to just horror movie characters either, any form of media, go nuts
I'll start with my top 4, The E.M.M.I from Metroid Dread, The Shambler from Darkest Dungeon, the Ferryman from ULTRAKILL, and finally, Lobo from Puss In Boots: The Last Wish
I'll start with the EMMI.
I've already made a character concept for the lovable death machine that played a criminally small role in the best Metroid game, but I didn't really go into detail as to why I think the E.M.M.I can work in DBD. To begin, the E.M.M.I is a planetary DNA extractor, built to be the perfect hunter, its body is extremely flexible and capable of bending in all manner of ways, its claws and feet let it scale walls and ceilings as well as pin down just about anything with ease, their head can turn into a spike that absorbs DNA as well as one-shots everything it happens to pierce and, just in case that wasn't scary enough for you, they hunt via echolocation, and they sound like this
That damn sound was, on my first playthrough of Dread, A instant flight or fight warning, and I usually picked flight because these machines are goddamn terrifying once they actually see you, E.M.M.Is are absolutely relentless once they're on the hunt, only way you're getting away is by either parrying them after they've grabbed you (good luck doing that because the timing is randomised down to the frame) or running away far enough for their hunt to be called off.
So what makes me think the E.M.M.I can work? Simple, it's a stalker and hunter, it has no mind of its own, meaning that the Entity wouldn't really have to do much in order to get it to play its games, and its power has all manner of potential implementations, the one I made, which referenced, among other things, both it's different tracking modes (Scouting when it hears nothing nearby, Searching when it has, and then finally Hunting once it has seen a survivor), but also all of the different abilities the different E.M.M.I models had. I will admit that this power will probably not happen since it's super complicated and a complete nightmare for console players, if it ever does get added to the game, its power, at bare minimum, must have two things, the beeping echolocation to track nearby survivors movements, and its ability to climb walls and ceilings, those bits are key to the E.M.M.I's identity as a enemy, not having them would be like Samus not having Missiles or Morph Ball.
The primary issue with getting the E.M.M.I into DBD is simple, Nintendo's borderline psychopathic obsession with protecting their copyright, that is the one and only problem I see BHVR having with implementing the E.M.M.I as a standalone paragraph like Bubba, Ghostface, and Pinhead, If Nintendo allows it, it'll work with no issues.
Next, the Shambler
Like the E.M.M.I, I've already made a Darkest Dungeon chapter concept for the Shambler, utilising a ton of different features, including spawning small Shambler Tentacles (The little buggers shown below) to patrol a area after hitting a survivor, which would be a unique form of area denial that no killer in the game currently can do, as well as teleporting via it's altars, actually stressing survivors out and giving them harsh debuffs if their mental health plummets enough, and blanketing the map in a dark purple void once all of the gens are done for some added flavour and potential stealth capabilities
The Shambler can work in DBD for a few reasons, one, it is one of the few non-area-boss enemies in DD that has enough of a identity and reputation to be instantly recognisable, it would be extremely unique given that we have nothing in the game that looks like it (Dredge doesn't count, he's a flesh pile controlled by darkness, not a eldritch shark), for two, if it's power gets added as I've envisioned it, it would be very unique, while it does deny area similar to Knight and Artist, the way it does it is by landing M1 hits rather then pressing the ability button and instantly shutting down the loop, essentially, whereas Knight and Artist are zoners, Shambler would be a herder, either making survivors run into it or into it's tentacles, it would also make the obvious stress-inducing nature of the trials a actual mechanic, I'm honestly kind of surprised that this wasn't made part of Dredge's kit given how well it fits cosmic horrors like him, some of us may be numb to it due to how long we've been playing DBD, but don't forget, Survivors get their memories wiped after every trial win or lose, every one would be a heart-racing and mentally-draining experience, so why not make that part of a killer's kit? Force survivors to pay attention to their mental health as well as their physical health, and while Shambler's fight doesn't actually have any music to base a chase theme out of, The Darkest Dungeon itself does, and a remix of it would fit pretty nicely for this predatory nightmare.
The primary issue with adding the Shambler is also the main reason why it's here, Darkest Dungeon is not a game a lot of people have played due to it being hard, long, and occasionally completely unfair by design, While i am sure that at least one person on the BHVR dev team is aware this game exists, you can't really translate DD's turn-based RPG combat system into a Asymmetrical horror/action game. I'm sure Red Hook would love to add at least something to DBD, and I know for a fact that I'd buy it in a heartbeat, but, at the end of the day, if it doesn't make financial sense to do so, BHVR won't do it, as much as that fact pains me.
Finally, my two wild-card options, starting with the Ferryman from ULTRAKILL
For those of you who don't follow ULTRAKILL lore, This wonderful gentlemen is the last Ferryman in the world of ULTRAKILL, saved by Gabriel himself after his ship capsized due to the River Styx flooding and the Leviathan forming following the extinction of humanity, draped in a cloak blessed by Heaven itself and carrying his now redundant oar as a weapon, The Ferryman just sort of spends his time doing whatever he feels like now that there are no more souls left to guide across the layers of Hell, creating various Idols in the likeness of the Virgin Mary out of ceramic demons (I swear that makes sense in context) and writing about how much he loves Gabriel and owes him for saving his life in his personal journal, his ship, The Ship of Fools, is massive with more then enough potential to be a actually fun indoor map (there is a ton of the ship we never see in-game, so BHVR could very easily expand on it, maybe let us explore the ruins of it following it getting capsized half-way through the level), and his TR and chase music can be a remix of his boss theme, He Is The Light in My Darkness.
The Ferryman can be found in the second level of the Wrath layer, known as Waves of the Starless Sea, and his fight reveals a few things, he's fast, his weapon hits like a truck, he probably plays Dark Souls due to how much he rolls (the ULTRAKILL wiki actually brings this up I kid thy not) he loves his idols and gets really upset when people (or machines in this case) break them, and he can call down ######### lightning using his oar. Those last two parts of that description need to be part of the Ferryman's kit.
My proposal for a Ferryman killer would be a 110% 24m Short killer due to him being just slightly taller then a human, his power would be a combination of range and area control, holding down m2 or it's alternative for 2 seconds will allow you to charge up a lightning strike with a small AOE (I'm thinking 3 metres but I'm not sure how good/bad that would be), whereas holding CTRL or it's alternative will allow you to place up to 5 idols across the map, these idols have a large AOE (For this proposal, it's 12 metres, slightly less range then Deathslinger's Redeemer), while in this AOE, the Ferryman gains 5% haste, his Lightning charges half a second faster and it has a extra 2 meters of AOE, survivors can destroy these idols by holding down the interact key for a few seconds, but if the Ferryman is close by and in the range of the Idol when it is broken, he'll become enraged, gaining the buffs from the Idol for 30 seconds, gaining it for a additional 10 seconds every time a idol is destroyed when he is near it. This would force survivors to think before breaking the Idols, as well as forcing them away from areas with Idols so that the Ferryman can't gain the buffs from them.
The primary issue I see with The Ferryman is, well, ULTRAKILL is a Doomer-Shooter, you can't really translate a lot of the Ferryman's mechanics from the source material into DBD without it being a balancing nightmare, but if that can be sorted out, I see no reason why Hakita wouldn't at least consider allowing it.
Finally, a very recent pick, Lobo
The movie this handsome devil is from isn't out in the UK yet, but, it has been out in the US for over a month, I've personally already been spoiled on what this guy represents and what he is, and for the sake of discussion, I will be including those spoilers, I'll let you know when I'm going to drop the spoiler, but I advise stop reading now and go watch the movie if you somehow don't know the twist yet, you've been warned
Lobo is one of the primary antagonists in Puss In Boots: The Last Wish, we as the audience are initially led to be believe that he is nothing more then a bounty hunter out for the price on Puss' head, and serves the literary purpose of knocking Puss down a few pegs, since he's become extremely desensitized to the idea of dying permanently due to being a cat and having 9 lives (deadass, he stopped counting his deaths, he had to be told he was on his last life and STILL didn't take it seriously), a role he succeeded by not only effortlessly dodging and blocking all of Puss' strikes, but by also being one of the few characters in animated movie history to straight up DRAW BLOOD on someone by landing a small cut on Puss' forehead, Puss, absolutely scared shitless of Lobo, runs away in fear, which leads to hijinks involving his old flame Kitty Softpaws, Perrito, a endlessly optimistic stray dog, Goldilocks and the 3 bears, and Big Jack Horner, all of them want the final wish for one thing or another, and for most of the movie Pus is able to get through most situations completely fine, with the exception of a few scenes, and it all starts with this sound.
Once this sound plays, the entire scene changes, Puss' hairs stand on end, as the cameras pans around, and the familiar face of Lobo is there to scare the crap out of him and the audience, it has the same effect of a horror movie stinger noise, like Jason's iconic "ch-ch-ch ha-ha-ha" and Michael's violins, and this is not by coincidence, as, leading to the climax, we learn what Lobo really is.
SPOILERS BELOW
Lobo isn't just a bounty hunter, he's Death itself, not metaphorically, or rhetorically, or poetically, or theoretically or in any other fancy way, he's death, straight up. That fact, when I first learned it, blew my mind, but simultaneously made perfect sense, the way he was able to sneak up on Puss in his first scene, the cloak, the sickles, him always appearing in any situation in which Puss is in some form of mortal danger, it is a example of a twist that is both satisfying and reframes every action he's taken, he isn't after Puss just for the money, he's after him because he's wasted 8 of his lives, something Lobo takes extremely personally (after all, "Puss in Boots laughs in the face of death"), either he kills Puss or Puss starts appreciating the last life he has, it also reframes his whistle, for those running from him it's terrifying, but for those who accept that this is the end for them, it's oddly soothing in a way, like the end has finally come and you can at last find rest, It also reframes his role as a antagonist, he isn't really evil like Jack Horner is, Lobo's just doing his job, granted, in this case he's doing it for personal reasons, intentionally cutting Puss' final life short due to being personally insulted by how frivolously he threw his first 8 away, but he's not really evil, as shown in his final scene where he lets Puss live due to him finally accepting his mortality and learning to value his final life, he's Death, a force of nature with no real concept of good or evil, he's, well, the end, your guide to the afterlife, he's here to do his job, not to kill you for kicks, and he has no reason to be a dick about it if you don't give him a reason to be.
As much as I would love Lobo to be a killer in DBD, there are two main issues with it that it will just never happen no matter how much I want it to, for starters, Lore, Lobo would have exactly no reason to be in DBD from a lore perspective, We can't go the typical "was either enticed/brainwashed into serving the Entity" thing with most killers since, well, you're not brainwashing something like Lobo, you also can't due something similar to Pinhead and Pyramid Head due to the Entity not really having a way to die aside from starving, which is pretty much impossible. Second, power, how do you give a power that's balanced in DBD to a creature like Lobo? We're certainly not going the Nurse route of letting him ignore basic game mechanics to kill survivors, and while he is a formidable fighter in the movie, this isn't a fighting game and he can't show any of his combat skills off. Even if Dreamworks allowed it (which they honestly might), you can't give a power to a force like Lobo and have it live up to the source material AND have it be balanced, you'd have to either make a generic power that's balanced, or a source-material accurate power that breaks the game in half, I'd love for Lobo to be in DBD, really I would, but It's just never going to happen unless someone breaks into BHVR's offices and add him themselves.
So yeah, those are my picks for characters who would be really niche DBD killers, I'm curious as to what the rest of you would like added to DBD, leave them below in the comments, i'd love to see them :)
G'night

Gabriel from malignant, I just think the guy is cool honestly. And I really enjoyed watching malignant, it was a fun and unique horror movie.
As for his power idk what it would be, maybe something to where he could jump around and attach to walls. Since he's quite agile in the movie, or something to do with the psychic powers in the movie. Idk how it'd be balanced since I'm not a dev, but I know a lot of people have been wanting a killer that would attach to walls. Probably isn't gonna happen though, since Gabriel's body is basically backwards the animations would be weird, and I don't think behaviour would see much of a profit in a malignant crossover so I'd doubt they'd make it. And I haven't even mentioned getting the rights to him.

Always liked the idea of the indoraptor being used as a killer.
Always loved the jurassic park films, while they aren't dedicated horror films the certainly had some great tense horror moments, particularly in the first one. That bit with the severed arm was brilliant.
I think the indoraptor hits that sweet spot of natural predator and test tube grown killer that would make for a cool dbd killer.
Reckon a stealth/tracking focused killer with stealth/lunge mechanics would fit it nicely. Crouch mechanic to grant undetectable and a big speed decrease, while crouched the ability to stop and sniff to trigger killer instinct within a certain range. Sniffing should make noise for balance and atmosphere. Imagine cranking a gen and hearing the sounds of a raptor sniffing, barely loud enough to hear over the gen turning over but not quite loud enough to be totally sure. The pounce could be either a one hit down or inflict deep wound. Should be strong as it wouldn't be triggerable mid chase like demo's shred.
And the kill it gets on the hunter in the cage is certainly an excellent one to base the mori on.

I'd love a werewolf, or a Alien type killer.
The wolf can gain buffs after getting blood, much like Oni, and an Alien can evolve like Myers tier's.

Because we need another killer dependent on AI!
Little AI spheres that come in three and go over walls, break pallets and get stuck in bushes!
Also, creepy Tarkin looking killer. Because Disney would never let them have the real Tarkin as a killer.
More AI greatness!
Maybe these could also jump over walls, get stuck on bushes, and have a neat 3 toy mori

Nobody asked for him
Nobody wants him
But boy howdy do we NEED him
GIVE US ZAAT

Not really obscure but I do think Part 1 Dio would be my dream Killer.
Not very realistic, sure, but I'd love to have him.
He's got cool powers, he's sassy, loves to talk ######### and he's a vampire.

I love that movie... you really know the way to my heart! Are you single?
J/k (concerning the single part, not how much I love the movie)
Seriously though, Would love to see that killer in DbD!
That killer and, since we're going obscure...
Pumpkinhead!
Sadly not as popluar as Freddy, Jason, Michael Myers, Pinhead, Chucky, the Critters, E.T. (you all know how horrifying that brown turd really is!) Or sadly even Leprechaun, but still Iconic and scary as hell. I would absolutely LOVE this guy in DbD, and Feel that it could totally work:
Reasons why he would work... Like the Shape, he's a vengeance demon/obsession based killer. Which means that either he could apply the obsession effect to more than one survivor and benefit from it, or have some particularly nasty obsession perks that makes survivors not want to be the obsession. No stalking mechanic neccessary, as I feel being stealthy but obsession based, makes him scarier if you make it so that seeing him/being in his TR, as he hurts you and your friends, only makes him stronger!
On top of that, he's a supernatural, indestructible pursuer who doesn't give a F about what you try to do to escape him, because he will come for you, he will find you, and he WILL KILL YOU... PAINFULLY! 😋
C'mon, you can't tell me that this doesn't just SCREAM DbD material!

Always nice to see another horror movie fan, especially someone who likes malignant. I haven't seen many people talk about the movie, which is a shame given how good it is.

IKR? I mean, it IS a very recent addition, but goddamn, that movie went from horror in the first act, to Mystery Cop thriller in the second act and just... BATSHIAT CRAZY in the third act, and for the life of me, I can't stop loving it!
The story/killer was creative as hell, and while melodramatic AF, the overall plot and surprise twist at the end... WOW!
FML... I need a cig... damn...
Love that movie. Gabriel would be a crazy fine addition to this game IMO, and even Better, Malignant was made by 1 of the 2 writers/directors that made the Saw Franchise! We already have the Pig in game, so what's stopping them from asking for Gabriel as well?
Incidentally, also an obsession focused killer, despite his unusual strength, agility and acrobatics. So maybe like for Pumpkin Head (admittedly he would make the 3rd killer in dbd with the PH initials... which is weirdly odd in my opinion), He could also have nasty Obsession based perks. As for his power... its obvious. Wall crawling and vaulting master of acrobatic pursuit that quickly allows him to chain hits within 20 meters. It basically nullifies windows and allows him to stealthily approach from on the walls/ceiling, but pallets are different. While he can vault them, he still can get surprised and stunned by them, and I feel, to make it balanced, he'd rather just break them since vaulting may only save him .2 seconds. Again Idk, I just really want great wall crawling, chain damaging, Stealth killer in the game.
Hell, what's stopping the Director (James Wan) from asking BHVR to Consider Gabriel for their game in the first place?

Honestly, if this includes Survivors:
Ivy XO (Crossout) - Nea Legendary Skin
Teshin (Warframe) - Knight/Oni Legendary Skin
Biotech Morlin (Spiral Knights) - Vittorio Legendary Skin
While not a specific character, I think it would be neat to have Crimson Armor and Night's Edge (Terraria) - Knight Legendary Skin
And even though I know it definitely WILL NOT fit, I do want to see Niko from One Shot in DBD since One Shot is an adorable game that I love.

He would be an amazing killer if he were to ever come to the game, he would be so different than most of the other killers in the game currently. And it wouldn't be that hard to make lore for him either. The survivor for this made up chapter could either be Emily/Madison, who is newly split from her brother due to the entity. Or it could be Sydney, who is now being hunted by Gabriel due to her part in his defeat. They could include lines as well, it would fit Gabriel very well and I'd love to hear him make some snarky remarks.
The movie perfectly sets up Gabriel's abilities and all the dev team has to do is build on it, there's so many props in the movies that could serve as addon's (such as the chair he throws at the cops on that one scene), and he already has his weapons. Which is really unique and could have a cool animations, since Gabriel's head is technically backwards most of his animations would be unique and cool to look at. Maybe one day they'll add him, probably not. But it doesn't hurt to dream.

Slight spoilers for Sally Face.
Sal Fisher from Sally Face ! Specifically, a white-eyed killer (according to the white eye killer theories, that the Entity makes them see things).
I don't have a whole paragraph to talk about the hows or the whys without spoiling the game entirely, but I think it could work !
If you've played the game, you know. =D
He could work as survivor as well depending on the timeline of when he's taken by the entity ! Both would be very cool in my opinion.

The Tall Man from Phantasm
Could he work in dbd? absolutely, between the ability to create Dimensional Forks which allows anyone who enters them to travel between time or dimensions, his flying Sentinel spheres that drill into people's skull and sucks out all the victim's blood, his undead re-animated slave army of lurkers and gravers to do his every bidding, there's plenty to pick from to work as his power.
-
Matt Cordell from Maniac Cop
Would he work in dbd? Pretty sure yeah, however given that he's pretty standard when it comes to a horror villain since he only got his brute strength, his nightstick with a hidden blade, sometimes a firearm and an unnatural talent for being stealthy along with a disappearing out of nowhere ability to work with, one might have to get creative with what his power would be.
-
Pumpkinhead from the movie with the same name.
Would the demon of vengeance work in dbd? I believe so, however just like before, one might have to get creative with his power however i believe Pumpkinhead's power could involve the obsession mechanic with one or multiple Survivors.
-
The Djinn from Wishmaster
Could he work in DBD? I'm not entirely sure actually.
On one hand, he has infinite power beyond your imagination at his disposal, but is held back by the requirement of not being able to use any of that power unless it's to grant a wish or if three(3) wishes has been granted by the one who awoke him. On the other hand, i'm not sure how a wish mechanic could be implemented in the game.
Although given how the Entity in DBD is capable of altering it's killers in many ways including tampering with their powers, it might be possible to come up with a creatively fitting power that doesn't break the rules of the game too much.
-
Herbert West from Re-Animator
I'm gonna cheat on the last one and include a Survivor as well, given how Survivor bots are being introduced into the game, i can see a potential for Herbert's inclusion along with a perk that allows him to revive a dead or sacrificed Survivor that would turn them into an AI bot.
