Simple, Realistic Buffs For Trapper

I think about how to help Trapper a lot. He's one of my favourite killers and my original main, I like the old boy a lot- but I also understand BHVR's reasonings for not giving him a full-on rework, and even agree with them overall. So, I've been thinking over the past few days what I'd suggest as a set of realistic, achievable buffs that could be done in a single update and that wouldn't contradict BHVR's desire to both preserve the simple starter killer + not upset his performance too much at lower levels.

As this is meant to be something for one patch's PTB, I'll be keeping this to just two simple changes and some addon reworks.

  • Bear Traps spawn placed, but not armed, in front of pallets and windows. This new spawn logic obeys previous spawn logic, with traps spawning near generators.

My reasoning for this change is fairly simple. Trapper's biggest weakness, at least insofar as engaging with his core gameplan goes, is that he has to spend time setting up- and to a degree, that's integral to his character fantasy.

With traps spawning in places you might actually want them to be, newer players get a sense for where bear traps might go, and more experienced players can cut down on setup time by eyeballing a spawn and thinking "yeah that'll do".

  • Re-arming Bear Traps on the ground is 50% faster than setting them from the inventory. This bonus is unaffected by setting speed increases.

Basically the same as before, but this would also help Trapper maintain any particularly important traps by getting to arm them a bit faster after someone steps in them or disarms them. Particularly useful for a handful of addon synergies, some which exist now and some that I'll get to next.

Now then, the addon changes. I'm restricting this to four, as I want them all to be fairly noticeable changes- more could be buffed in small ways, but these are the ones I think should be changed.

Serrated Jaws

  • Was: Survivors injured by a Bear Trap suffer from Haemorrhage until fully healed.
  • Now: Survivors injured by a Bear Trap suffer from Haemorrhage & Mangled for 70 seconds.

Simple change. There's no reason for those two effects to be separate, so we're merging them, and it's not an incredible effect so it goes on the lower rarity addon.

Rusted Jaws

  • Was: Survivors injured by a Bear Trap suffer from Mangled for 70 seconds.
  • Now: Survivors who disarm a Bear Trap suffer from Mangled for 70 seconds.

Thematically it makes sense for these two addons to have similar effects, and I think Trapper needs more addons for when survivors disarm traps- it's an important part of his counterplay and should be expected to happen multiple times a match, after all.
At the same time, it's not a crazy debilitating effect, just something that can help Trapper either snowball from injured survivors or keep pressure up due to slower heals.

Tar Bottle

  • Was: Bear Traps are darker.
  • Now: Setting a Bear Trap grants Undetectable for 8 seconds.

The Tar Bottle has fallen from grace hard, going from the single best addon Trapper had (after accounting for only having one slot due to needing to run a bag addon) to something that honestly has a pretty big chance of backfiring if you run it today.
Changing it to an Undetectable addon gives Trapper the option of going for a stealth playstyle, and more options is always nice.

Tension Spring

  • Was: Bear Traps reset automatically 2 seconds after a survivor escapes one.
  • Now: Setting a Bear Trap reveals all survivor auras within 12m for 4 seconds.

This may be a contentious one- do people use this addon? I don't, though it is the most useful one on the list here. This could also be a rework for the Oily Coil as that's already an aura addon, so take your pick- either would need revised flavour text, so it's no big difference either way.
Anyway, it's a purple addon so it deserves a strong effect, and this one in particular would be quite useful for Trapper.

So those are the ideas. Two basekit changes and four addon reworks, aimed to be realistic and sensible for a medium-sized killer update. They aren't crazy transformative, they shouldn't upset kill rates lower down in the MMR ranks, but they should help ease some of Trapper's biggest pain points in his current kit.

What do we think?

Nice buff, or a QOL more like.

    But still nice.
