Why is performance getting worse while quality isn't increasing?

So, I just went on my storage drive trying making up some space and came across some of my old video footages from dbd I made in 2016-2017.

I noticed that not only the game was looking much better (quality wise, textures, sharper etc) but I also had significantly more fps on average (steam fps overlay gets recorded automatically so I can compare directly) than today.

Normally you would think if the game gets better quality it dips the fps lower a bit (or vice versa or optimally an increase of both things). However, DbD looks worse than 2016/2017 AND has worse performance. Why is this happening? I NEVER saw something like this happening in other games.

It's like a Picture of Dorian Gray thing. As the devs keep prettying up the ever-growing pile of premium paid crap, the base experience rots and decays in the attic.

The thing about performance is that it's never going to be the same for everyone. The graphics have absolutely and intentionally (yeah, I know, as awful as that it is) been downgraded, both for performance and also to match PC with console.

But FPS has always been hit or miss. Many people with great machines complained constantly about how awful DBD ran back in the day.

I can make dbd look blurry on my desktop pc (gtx1080).

In windows graphics settings you can find Image Settings. You can choose between- Performance / Balanced / Quality. If I set it to "performance", my dbd becomes blurry. :D You can try to set it to "quality", I guess. Maybe it will help.

I did all the engine.ini tweaks but it still looks worse than 2017 (even without the tweaks).

The thing is tho, if the graphics were intentionally downgraded for better performance.. Why do I have less fps than back in the days? I haven't changed anything in my system since 2016 besides more ram and changing my HDD with an SSD. And my CPU, gpu are still running like day one in different games so I exclude that my hardware got broke over time.

I personally just can't understand it

I'm just wondering why hair looks even worse than ever lately. Especially on Oni and Spirit. It's see-through and you can see Spirit's black head underneath.

The game just gets bloated with clutter code at this point. On the Steam version, we are at 30GB memory right now. Which is way too much for a game with that little content and bad graphics. There is definetely alot of redundant code running in the background. The developers really should do some cleanup. The console version really could use it.
