Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

The term crutch perk is overperforming and needs heavily adressing

The definition of a crutch is something that just makes a certain task easier with some kind of drawback in video game terminology.

The best example of a crutch is the loach n load from team fortress 2 : faster pipes in return for a drastically lower magazine size. Less dps but hitting individual pipes are easier.

Let's look at what are commonly called crutches in dbd and see if they fit this definition. If there's a star next to the perk then there's gonna be a point to be made explaining some stuff :

*Ds - there's no downside to running it, it's a relatively safe perk with a huge reward . the only way it hinders you is by taking up a perk slot after activating it so....I'm not sure. But I don't think it's a crutch, just a very imbalanced perk in terms of risk and reward.

*Noed - no benefit until all the generators are done but then you get insta downs until the totem is cleansed. The trial up until the endgame is made more difficult in return for a huge reward at the endgame. This is sort of a crutch but only for endgame as throughout the rest of the trial it does nothing at all

*Adrenaline - free health state and a speedboost. See noed for a slightly more detailed analysis.

*Unbreakable - See DS, it's a great comeback perk however after its first use it only applies a recovery speed buff , unlike the definition of a crutch this doesn't make any other aspect of survivor gameplay worse .

Dead hard - here's the tricky perk. While on the one hand it does give a safety net for survivors who aren't the best at looping this is also a perk with a higher skill cap - it's ill advised to bring any other exhaustion perk with this as well. If you end up using one you can't use the other so it could technically be classed as a crutch because it hinders the aspect of perk choice but. It's ultimately up to your opinion on it

Bbq and chilli : a handful counters. No hindrance to the killer. It isn't a crutch

(I honestly can't think of more than 2 killer perks for the assumed crutches list. I apologize)

* one time use perks or perks that are inactive for most of the trial affect each individual role separately, a survivor can afford to give up one perk slot whereas for a killer they need to optimize all 4 to have efficient and fun matches. It's simular with add ons. A survivor doesn't need to bring in an item to do well whereas a killer almost always needs add ons to be decent, look at wraith and trapper as examples.

Here are some perks that I'd call actual crutches :

Zanshin tactics - it only shows the aura of pallets and Windows, and then gets put on a cooldown. Making the aspect of pallet locating easier while hindering the killer by taking up a perk slot

Deer stalker - see zanshin tactics but replace the word pallet and window with downed surivors

Windows of oportunity - see zanshin tactics but replace the word killer with survivor

50% of calm spirit - the ability to not alert crows is already build into the crouch function of the game, but not being revealed by scream perks is nice

Iron grasp - mad grit prevents body blocking in a better way and agitation gives you more distance. The only real upside is the reduced struggling affect (the reverse of boil over) and as stated earlier this is a wasted perk slot with a quality of life benefit, it's a crutch sadly.

Tldr : stop using the term crutch like your naming animals in question zoo and try to use it correctly.

don't forget to drink your Yorkshire tea and have a nice day. If not I will find you and I will put a singular soggy teabag through your letterbox

I wouldn't call Zanshin or Windows "crutch", but more "tutoroal" perks.

And for most of the perks here, they are either just heavily universal or good, and have some level of skill requirement to use effectively. Except one.

NoED for me is literally the definition of a crutch perk, and only really useful on maps with bad totem spawns or solo-queue. "JuSt Do BoNeS!" I hear people cry. You have ZERO REQUIREMENT I respond. Every other "crutch perk" has a level of requirement other than "lose badly" and get such a powerful reward.

I don't like your definition on crutch.

A crutch is something that carries you, that without it you couldn't possibly get as far as you got.

Completely agree. NOED carries so many bad players and gives them kills they would never have earned otherwise.

DS and BT rely on the killer camping/tunneling so I wouldn’t consider them crutch

Only survivor perk that even comes in the ballpark is DH or SB since it grants weak players a free pallet.

No lie. We just ignore the noed when it pops up. Escape anyway. Blood warden is more annoying than anything as the rest of the team just sits there staring at it. Never saw exposed as something empowering to the killer when 50 different notifications are going off as you watch the killer spin around violently. Not to mention the Dwight constantly vaulting the whole time or meg opening lockers nonstop.

For your TF2 example I think the original Liberty Launcher is a better example. Just the rocket launcher with faster rockets (easier to hit) but with one less before you gotta reload (less DPS potential) - better if you can't hit your rockets, straight up worse if you can hit default rockets. The Loch n Load used to have higher damage that broke important damage thresholds and the current version sorta specializes in destroying buildings.

BUT ANYWAY I agree as I view the term in a similar way when it comes to gaming. Something that makes something easier short term, but is worse long term. Lowers the skill floor but also lowers the skill ceiling for you at the same time. In DBD and many other games it's in my opinion quickly becoming a pointless buzzword that could be replaced with terms like "overpowered" or "unfair" without any issue at all.

But I guess that's just because my definition of the word applied to stuff in gaming is different to that of other people. Just like other terms that can often leave people confused in a similar way like toxic, tryhard/sweaty and so on.

I'm going to be nicer because I'm already jailed, so I'm going to put it like this. Killers use NOED because gen slowdown is ineffective and coupled with the fact that survivors don't do dull totems anymore. They also are running 3 perks until the end game, where the survivors have already completed their objective. It also can be completely removed by survivors. But I guess taking a few seconds to hold M1 on a bone is too complicated.

"YoU hAvE ZeRo rEqUiReMeNt" some people love to say. Why does every killer perk need to have some complex ass requirement? I don't see that same bullshit line of thinking with survivor perks. The only survivor perks I can think of that requires survivors to go out of their way to get a bonus are perks like Stake Out, Mettle of Man, and Autodidact. Guess how many people run those perks? Survivors want their perks to be easy to activate through normal gameplay (or exhaustion) and every decent killer perk to require 5 sacrifices to use and come with a 5 minute cooldown. Imagine if Lithe required you to to jump through a certain amount of windows before it activated, or sprint burst had a build up period before activating instead of being instant when you run.

BT enables risky unhooks and allow survivors to play super aggressively with their altruism. Stop acting like every BT activation comes from camping. Survivors routinely exploit perks like this.

DS was better prior to the change. Now it amounts to a free health state. Especially if all 4 are running it. Sprint Burst rewards poor positioning, but better people than me have already pointed that out.

I'm not asking for something super complicated, just something on the killer's end, other than "lose badly" against solos who can't get all bones.
