Why Does Rancor, As a Perk, Exist?
Had a game where a doctor LITERALLY couldn't catch me, so I deserve the escape if I earn it, right? Wrong.
The gens popped and he chased, downed me, THEN moried me without me being hooked once! Why can this happen? At least with NOED you can AVOID it from being activated, or shut it down if it does. With Rancor you have no choice.
"Just escape you trash survivor main." I hear you thinking... I'd liked to but since the aura reading exists he spotted and targeted me.
The sad thing is, I don't even blame the doctor for this, I blame the devs. For even allowing a perk like this to go through AND promote it by putting it in The Archive Challenges.

To frustrate the one poor soul at the enjoyment of killer. A lot of this game is like that for both sides. Rather than make it fun for both sides, the game is kinda more about rewarding things that you can do at the expense of the other side.

Rancor does give you warning that it's active. It doesn't just come out of nowhere at the end of the game. And the killer can't see survivor auras, only their general locations when the perk activates. The strategy to counter Rancor is to make yourself scarce when the last generator is about to pop, and play as stealthily as possible after that point. Let someone else open the gate and then run through it when the killer is not nearby. And if they catch you, then you got outplayed. It happens. Lament your loss and move onto the next game.

Aura reading, whispers, etc.... if they want you they tend to find you. Even if they don't a lot of the time, it sucks to have everything you worked hard to do, everything you put effort into all game yanked from you at the last second because you were the one person randomly select to get screwed over later.
I totally understand OPs point. I don't think it's too strong, or OP, or that there is no counter.... it's just something that is really obnoxious as a concept because it's just your bad luck you were the one.

But Entity forbid the killer has one thing that is uncounterable.

Yeah, it sucks to be the obsession when Rancor is in play, but usually you know from the time the first generator pops, if you're paying attention, that it's in play. It's not like random chance screwed you over at the very end. Just like half of the perks in the game, once you realise it's in play, you adapt your strategy accordingly. And sometimes you still get outplayed, and that's okay. It doesn't make the perk itself unfair or unhealthy.
Also, getting killed at the last minute is far from having everything you worked for ripped away from you. Rancor is far less punishing than, say, facecamping. The survivor still gets most of their bloodpoints, and they will almost certainly still pip if they did well the rest of the game.

Borrowed Time is to prevent tunnelers.
Decisive Strike is to prevent being tunneled.
Dead Hard is a fun lil’ exhaustion perk, I guess?

I did notice it was there, which is good on me.
I honestly forget that it didn’t COMPLETELY revealed the survivor, so that was good to know.
I really did try to be stealthy at the end, by leaving the generator early and trying to be as an immerse Claudette I could be.
But try as I may, it just didn’t work. Also, again, it was a Doctor. The killer MADE to remove stealth.

Haha, honestly only the Ebony moris is the issue.
Keys haven’t been getting their own nerfs, but there have been ways to weaken them.
Like having to do a set amount of gens, closing the hatch and such...

Being the obsession isn't always in your control.
Sometimes, even if the killer or any other survivor doesn't use an obsession perk, there will still be an obsession

That's true. I think that the mori that allows you to kill the final survivor is good bc that's the end of the game anyway, but moris and keys are just the worst when it comes to both sides enjoyment of the game

Rancor is fine, you had a lot of time to prepare for it because you're given aura reading from the killer. If you can put context clues together, that should tip you off the killer has Rancor and that you shouldn't show yourself to the killer towards the end.
Since you couldn't stealth, you should've stayed away from the Exit Gates since the Doctor will likely use Static Blast there. 😁

You got killed but you are not dead, you got your points and can move on to the next trial.

Also, BT and DS give survivors literal immunity. How many times does someone have DS, you go down and hook another survivor, then they just run up and suicide the hook cuz they know they can. Or they just work a gen and are completely invulnerable for 60 seconds. You cant down them because UB, and even if you tried they just hop into a locker and are literally invulnerable. you have no choice but to eat the DS or leave them to do a gen for 60 seconds.

You don't deserve anything. The game doesn't end until everyone is dead or escaped. You have the opportunity to avoid the killer that's using Rancor unless he was chasing you the moment the last gen pops.

Im not saying it is a true counter, but at times I don't do last gen(Depending on the Situation) and hide in a locker. Or if luck is on my side I run one way until aura reading is gone, then go the other way.

Rancor shows auras for a few seconds when a Gen is done... but when the last one is done the aura reading lasts longer and the obsession is exposed
And it makes sense lore wise... for spirit at least... her rage is focused onto one survivor
In terms of game play the perk Is good as is... killer sees survivors and survivors see killer... its this game in a nutshell (cat and mouse)

I disagree strongly. Knowing it exists was never the problem in question. I disgree, if you are unlucky enough to be the obsession in that instance you are screwed from any end game saving or anything it's just over and feels awful. You are confusing it being unfair or broken or something with just being an unpleasant thing to play around. It's not even remotely as bad a lot of stuff in game so I wouldn't even change it, but I am not about to be ignorant of the fact it's just really an obnoxious thing to have happen, like what a lot of things in this game are kinda designed around either.
Just because face camping is far worse doesn't mean it's not something I can't be sympathetic about. A lot of the game is designed around obnoxious, frustrating mechanics and abilities, it's just something folks have to live with but that doesn't mean they are any less frustrating.

If the exit gates are open, how long they last is irrelevant. Since we're talking about end game scenarios here (cause thats the only time rancor works).

No, you can't save people in the endgame if you're affected by Rancor. Sometimes you can't do the thing you want to do because unfortunate things happen that you can't personally control. That is the case in pretty much every game ever, not to mention life in general.
I know being on the receiving end of Rancor sucks. I just don't automatically consider it to be a design flaw if something in a game isn't fun for me.

I was unlucky and was hit with: a yellow mori offering, NOED, and Rancor... I was the obsession, didn't realize what I was going against until the mori animation started and end game scoreboard

That is kinda a far far reach outside of the scope of discussion but sure. I consider unnecessarily frustrating mechanics a design flaw, you are certainly welcome to your separate opinion though.
Rolling with bad luck is a great trait to have sure, but just like pig box RNG just because I get buggered by it and it's frustrating, doesn't mean it can't be done in a much better way. I see it as a bad design choice.

I think that's the pivotal issue - I don't consider RNG an inherently bad thing as a game feature. So I suppose this is where we'll need to agree to disagree.

Tbh Rancor doesn't bother me that much I can see where it might bother some folks like OP is all. I find RNG okay if it isn't like, really in your face. I find Pig's boxes really in your face in that example so they bother me, but each person's tolerance of it is going to be different for sure.
A lot of people hate RNG in competitive games because it diminishes skill the more it's present. Like totem spawns for example, they are getting better with updates, but having your ruin spawn in literal eyesight of a survivor at the start of a game was horrible bad luck, and it doesn't exactly feel fair when sometimes it's just useless immediately because of that, sometimes it's not.
The totems being hidden randomly however makes sense, so does hatch and so on since it's providing mystery instead of just shifting odds.
Just trying to provide the other side's view on that though, if you disagree that's fine I respect that, but I am likely not to be convinced is all.

I mean yeah, i can see how it bothers people, but OPs REASONING for it...that "she deserved the escape" is complete nonsense. You don't deserve what you don't get, and by their own logic, DS/BT etc. shouldn't exist.
I haven't been killed by Rancor since the week it was introduced when Spirit came out in September 2018. So if you're playing survivor and getting Rancor'd that often...you're doing it wrong.

Oh you absolutely never deserve to escape until you are out of that gate. I see a lot of people get cocky and pay for it at the gates and then get salty in post game chat lol.
The odds of rancor lining up are pretty slim anyways, hence why I don't see it really as a specific problem that much compared to soooo many far larger issues. I can see the nonsense to it, but it's so insignificant compared to the pile.

Yeah, it's not that bad comparatively I can see his frustration with that aspect of it alone as it's a running trend in this game a bit, but it's a minuscule offense and one that is pretty much fine as it is really. Just like you said it's highly situational.

Hard disagree. Nurse basekit change is a design flaw, DS is a design flaw, and moris are a design flaw (at least in terms of balance). Good design is fun, what else would it be?

In all fairness toward Rancor, the obsession is gaining something in return in the form of aura reading that their teammates dont have. This doesnt act as JUST a warning for rancor, but is useful in itself in that the killer is GIVING the survivor Dark Sense for the tradeoff that they have to be extra careful during the endgame. Its similar in a way to OoO whereas yes, you get something strong...but youd giving your opponent something in return.

It only costs you life if you get caught in the endgame. The perk doesnt give just your location, but your entire team's so the killer is equally likely to find one of your teammates during the endgame. In return to having to play defensive during endgame, you get a nice boost for the rest of the match.
