Opinion on Ebony Mori's

Originally, I was going to go on a rant about ebony mori's, but I want to hear the community and hear what they have to say.

Just search for Ebony Mori in the search feature at the top of the page. There's been about a 1000 threads on this already.

They are a cool feature, but at the current state, Ebony moris are very overpowered. There are many good suggestions how to ballance them a bit, but devs rather delete toolboxes, Instaheals and add breakable walls.

Not an issue, very rarely run into them.

Take comfort knowing the killer depipped by using that offering.

Very rarely run into them because they're the most toxic thing in this game and ruin the game for not just survivors but killers too. Me personally, I think they should just do away with Mori offerings completely. Instead, if a survivor is on their 3rd hook give the killer the option to Mori or hook the survivor. This way it does 2 things.. #1, helps the killer because they know the survivor is on death hook and #2, makes it so the killer doesnt have to waste time bringing them to a hook.

About as balanced as map design

Probably because instaheals were broken and toolboxes were also too strong. Having literally 20% faster gens at 3/4 of the match was broken.

But yeah moris and keys are still both very OP and should be nerfed anytime soon.

I've mentioned this on other topics and will repeat here, Ebony Mori's should be reworked to where a killer can't perform it until they've hook a survivor twice. The Ebonies can deplete the field in very short time, one minor change should make it more challenging and killers can't use it as a crutch to easily kill survivors.

Or similarly, they can't use them until they've hooked everyone in the trial at least once. That way they at least get an advantage out of it by having the ability to take a survivor out early, but the team has some level of counterplay in having survivors who haven't been hooked yet play super safe to avoid giving the killer the opportunity to mori.

I'm not a fan myself as a killer. I dont mind the green one but the ebony just feels too strong to me. If I use one I only use it on the survivors last hook.

My experience on them from the survivor POV is that they're exclusively used by hook campers with noed looking for easy early game pressure.

Here's what every killer does when they use an Ebony.

    Hook.

    Walk away for 10 feet.

    Get unhooked.

    Tunnel the hooked survivor.

    Mori.

It's boring gameplay, stale and overdone.

need heavy tweaks. something like must've hooked everyone at least once before use or can only be used after all gens are completed

Ebony mori's should become what green mori's are now. Green mori's should require an extra condition such as sacrificing a survivor first. Yellow mori's should activate during the end game collapse. That would be balanced imho. I do hope that they balance gen speed before making this change though.

I would gladly give up Ebony Mori in return for the key being gone.

    Let's make it happen!

As someone who plays Survivor 70% and Killer 30% the time. I absolutely love Mori's. I have only used any Mori just once though and it was for Freddy. I personally like being Mori'd, it's a privilege to be Mori'd because I rarely see it and I play 4 hours a night.

I like the animations and the mori mechanic being a thing, but I wish Ebony + Ivory worked in a way that didn't encourage downing someone straight off the hook to mori them ASAP. Not sure how that'd be changed, even something as simple as "you gotta hook someone else before the first survivor can be killed" would help a lot if the somewhat popular "gotta hook everyone first" suggestion is too demanding.

Cypress mori could be basekit for all I care, would get to see the animations more often and lets everyone get a chance of doing mori dailies without BP investment to get a mori or a perk that enables them in some way.

And since I don't want to be excommunicated I have to complete the ritual you apparently have to do whenever you criticize moris: I think hatch-opening keys are dumb as well 🙃

  • Deadman316
    Deadman316 Member Posts: 578

Why does everyone think the key is an automatic win? In a full survivor trial, 4 gens must be repaired before the hatch appears and even then you have to search for it. You tell me what's easier, that, or hooking a survivor and tunneling them for Mori's as someone has posted above?

  • Nickeleye
    Nickeleye Member Posts: 278

    I don't think it's an automatic win. I didn't say that.

You seem to be under the impression. That chasing down a survivor, hitting him twice, hooking, camping , tunneling , and finishing him with mori. Is somehow not as hard as holding M1 on a gen. I disagree.

I dont hate keys because of 4 man escapes. I hate keys because they seem to always belong to the survivor who does nothing. Just hiding and waiting on a teammate to die. So they can hit the hatch.

The devs wouldn't put the items in our bloodwebs if they didnt want us to use them obviously.

But if the community ever wanted to give up keys and Ebony mori's. I would be okay with that.

Moris are fine where they are except Cypress. Killers should be able to kill off the bat as much as the game allows, it's one of the few things that balances the game.

Until devs do something about gen times or find a way to give survivors another objective I say moris are exactly where they should be.

Problem with the game right now is that survivors dont have to play well to win. They just have to go to gens and hold down a button. They can fail at looping and fail at avoiding the killer as long as the other survivors are doing gens. It's too easy for survivor right now.

Killers bring a mori into the game and suddenly survivors have to play good. Suddenly survivors have to prove they deserve to be in red ranks because as we all know majority of them dont.

I used to be very competitive as a killer, and relished holding rank 1 each season, as well as dropping back down to rank 10 during the resets, but these days I don't play as much as I used to. Because I play more casually than before, I actually don't like being in red ranks anymore since they are just frustrating for any non-competitive player, and so when I inevitably do achieve red rank, I purposely de-rank to something more comfortable. I don't flat out stop playing for months of course, since that doesn't really do any good, and you can achieve the red ranks again within a casual week of playing, but I also don't just let the survivors win all willy nilly, go afk, or DC, since there is a much simpler and fun way to de-rank while still keeping in the spirit if the game: Ebony Mori's.

I have a ton of these mean little red/pink skull offerings in all of my killers inventories because, unless I'm using them for the purpose of de-ranking, there's literally no incentive to use them at all. Killing a survivor after their first hook means that you end up losing major Devout, Malicious, and Chaser points, and so for competitive players, this means that you lose out on the points necessary to gain a PiP. This is doubly important for when you reach red ranks, wherein gaining PiPs requires 9 or more points towards your emblems. If you're just killing survivors after their first hook however, you can't even earn 8 points, and this is also enhanced by using a killer with instant down abilities/add-ons/perks etc, since ending a chase too quickly lowers your Chaser point scoring as well.

Bonus: You still earn decent Bloodpoints as well, so there's not really any downsides to playing this way.

Double Bonus: If 1 or more survivors DC, or kill themselves on their first hook because they hate your build and the Mori, that also earns you an "Entity Displeased" score.

So, to sum this all up:

If you reach the red ranks and don't want to stay there, simply gear up your killer with Instant downs + Ebony Mori's, and watch your rank plummet while you have some very fast, fun, and exciting games.

"Mori's: The fun way to de-rank!"

Honestly, I feel like most Mori's currently are outdated and need to be removed from the game to be implemented in a different way.

NOED should be an Ebony Mori at the end of the game and be revoked of a hex status. Perhaps turning the exposed timer back to 2 minutes like it used to be while having a permanent haste status. I mean, back in the day NOED really held up to its name because being hooked after the gates were powered pretty much meant you were dead. But nowadays? NOED should give the option to straight up murder someone once the gates are powered.

Rancor is basically an Ivory Mori already, but should apply on gates being powered rather than all gens being done.

Leaving only Cypress Mori, which could simply be removed if the final survivor turns into the obsession if the killer closes the hatch, making Rancor take it's place.

It's perhaps a crude fix, not very well thought out considering potential consequences, but currently Mori's, especially Ebony Mori, are ruining the pipsystem and simply ruin the mood of a game.

Imagine defending something like an ebony

something that powerful has no place in a game if the devs want to act like they want it balanced

Red and green moris should be final hook stage only, yellow is fine as it is. If the killer has camped for more than 30-45 seconds the mori deactivates for a short time. If the killer moves out of camping range then straight back in to counter the deactivation the mori is on a cd for the amount of time camped. For example, camping for 25 seconds moves out of range for 5 seconds then back in, cd for 20 second. Camps without moving out of range and hitting the time limit would be a one minute cd.

If there is a problem with gen speed (i dont think there actually is a problem but many apparently think so) then there has to be a better solution then removing toolboxes off the game completly but rather have a second objective or change gen times or whatever. This is such a poor approach and nothing more then a concession without having a decent solution.

I have no idea why they have not simply reduced charges to 50% instead of complete mallet method and see where this goes. That would be a decent nerf and toolboxes would still have some value.

This game is so often shifting from one extrem to another.

Ebony's and Ivory's need another condition. Cypress should stay the same, because them being baseline would make perks like "Flip-Flop" and "Boil Over" less effective, if you're the last survivor.

(keys need to be chabged in the same update)

I feel like the only character who LOVES ebony moris, especially on both sides. As a survivor I find it hilarious as I spontaneously get killed by the killer. I admire the mori's on some of the killers and I only ever equip one when I see all survivors using toolboxes or flashlights.
