If you willingly DC because "you aren't having fun", you deserve the punishment. Not only do you not get any points, but you ruin the game for 4 other people.
If you DC because of an actual emergency in real life, the penalty means nothing. Go do what you need to do.
If you crash, the time is barely, if at all, noticeable. By the time you load back in, it should be over.
If you crash every other match... I would get your internet or router checked. Happened to me a while back due to faulty wiring.

You can make all the biased polls you want but you can't change the fact that people want to actually play the game without some ######### disconnecting in the middle. The penalties have reduced how many DC's I've seen by a large margin and the few that I do see I can be content knowing they get to be ######### over by a penalty that keeps them from even getting the chance of getting into another match and disconnecting on another poor soul.
So ######### yeah I'm choosing "stay like you were in prison" and screw you + everybody else who introduces these biased polls thinking you're going to sway anyone from voting the way they normally would.

First of I don't DC I play on PlayStation and I constantly glitch out of games and then get a penalty if not for that I would say keep the penalty

Others paid for the game too. They deserve to not have their team dc.

But hey, what did you expect? You cant see more than your own tip of the nose, and even that barely. I could also mention yours "balance the game" - okay, i want killer to be able to insta-kill survivors at start of the match by pressing R, if not then they will punish paying customers. You have another vision of "balance"? Oh, well... it seems like every one of us have his/her own idea of "balance", so ALWAYS there will be some "punished" customers. Or maybe did you state "DO WHAT I WANT OR DONT DO AT ALL" ? If yes then i am sorry, with that kind of atitude life must be very hard for you :(

Im not the one who disconnects, i just got the game recently and game punishes me for no reason, the thing is laggy killers boot me off or horrible servers.

I'm fine with the DC penalty, it's just that it should be able to differentiate if the server booted you or if you actually DC'd. I played a game last Thursday where the game booted everybody and we all ate the 5 min. Also the penalties still are super simple to get around, just ######### on hook. So everybody who wants to DC but keep playing will just do that, making the penalty only give lipservice to preventing people from ruining games.

Decrease times. My internet doesn't cut out 'every other match'. It might go out twice a day at MOST, and I was unlucky enough to have this happen three days in a row. Combined with a single game crash, this built up to a six hour penalty which I don't feel was fair. I waited 24 hours before playing again, only for my internet to cut out after 4 matches. This led to another six hour penalty. So I'm stuck unable to play today or tomorrow for fear of the penalty, despite the fact I'd never disconnect more than twice in a day. (And the one crash that was the game's fault, I was almost out the exit gate when it crashed. Like if it waited half a second longer, I'd have gotten a ton of BP for escaping)
I'm fine with there being a penalty, but it should NOT escalate so fast. My next penalty would be 24 hours I believe. That escalation is way too fast.

Just go do something else while you wait for the timer to reset.
No matter what caused the DC you're better off taking a break from DbD for a bit. I've had my power flicker midgame, so I stopped trying to play DBD and went and read a book.
In addition to the above situation I've been DC'ed by the game twice and DC'ed myself once since DC penalties when enacted and I've not once had the penalty timer go up.
If the game is acting up for you, if you're getting frustrated, or if your internet/power is cutting out you're just better off just doing something else IMO.
1 -
I'm not even gonna take the time to vote on this. If you have a problem with the DC penalty it's likely because you DC over dumb things like the killer was actually good or the survivors were out playing you. Stop ruining the game for others or just don't play 🤷

The fact that I get penalized for being a rank 14 killer getting matched w red and purple rank sWFs handing my ASS to me and purposely not finishing/99ing the last gen and holding the game hostage when I give up and walk to a corner so they CAN FINISH AND JUST LEAVE! But they don't get penalized for that #########!
4 -
Stay like you were in prison
That would be holding the game hostage so, yes, they will get penalized for it if they do it repeatedly. You can do your part by reporting it.
While I understand that this is a bad situation, lowering DC penalties just because things like this might happen from time to time would be unreasonable. Matchmaking is the issue here, DC penalties aren't.

Can't they atleast find a way to just punish DCing on purpose? Lately i've had bad internet which i can't change
2 -
Remove DC Penalties / decrease times
Well they refuse to address matchmaking issues, so it IS kinda the issue. It's bad and a killer gets penalized for trying there best against a team they stand zero chance against and DC when they finally had enough of all there toxic BS. But a survivor doesn't like the killer, doesn't like the map, or is facing a GOD killer can just stand there or worse, run right to the killer, get downed, and suicide on hook, and that's perfectly fine. There DC system is #########, and isn't punishing the ones who ACTUALLY NEED it.

Sir, its not for dumb scenarios like laggy killers, its either servers being trash or getting booted off.
1 -
Remove DC Penalties / decrease times
I do not want them to be deleted, but they need to fix certain things such as if the game crashes or if they disconnect without them purposefully doing so (i.e. loss of internet connection). I don't think DC penalties should be removed per say, because it prevents people from ditching the game. However, it totally needs to fix the detection of what is a DC penalty.
On another side note, people really do just suicide on hooks. It's like a DC later in the match on purpose, this is another reason why I wan't a replacement for struggle.
2 -
If your actually getting booted because of bad internet that's one thing. But there are still plenty of people who DC over crap like "I don't like that perk/killer" or "pallets are op". Hopefully with time they will fix the DC and bad connection issues and when they do they should probably increase the DC penalties. The stronger the punishment the less likely you are to find people willing to take it.

In my experience, people usually disconnect after certain events like getting downed, grabbed or hooked for survivors or losing a generator, totem or chase for killers.
Obviously, these people didn't disconnect because of connection issues. They ragequit. Therefore, I just can't support the argument of "Most people disconnect involuntarily."
Struggling with bad internet or crashes can definitely be frustrating and I feel sorry for anyone having these issues. Still, if someone knows that they have unreliable internet or performance and they still queue up for a game and then end up disconnecting for those reasons, they still ruined a match for 4 other people and I still find a penalty useful in order to give them the time they need to fix their issue while also preventing them from disrupting any more matches for a little while.
2 -
My thoughts exactly.
So, OP: Get over it, or play something else if it bothers you that much.

How is it one-sided? There are five players in a game. If any one of them DCs, it ruins the experience for the other four.

DC Penalty has brought out the worst in toxic behavior because people who want to ruin other people's gameplay know for sure you are trapped in their with them or face consequences. It has made 80% of the matches ridiculous, every one a huge camp, tunnel and slug fest. I was as frustrated as the next guy when people frivolously DC'd 2 seconds into a match because they didn't like the killer or map but if someone is getting hardcore face-camped after they were tunneled by all means DC on this toxic bro and get on to the next match.
No other major multi-player game you pay for forces you to play with jerks, and take the abuse or get punished for deciding you do not want to play with said jerks. There is no block list system in place either so you may get stuck with the same ridiculous behaviors from the same people repeatedly.
If DC penalties escalated in 2 minute increments, ok. If they only applied to DC's in the 1st 3 minutes of gameplay, ok. If they just instituted block lists so undesirable people could be avoided, even better. But as is it just rewards terrible behavior, forces you to choose between wasting your time playing with toxic Aholes, or ending your game for the night.
There is also the problem that I got disconnected from a server the other night and got a 30 minute penalty. I didn't even DC. There was a guy up above who has glitchy internet (way more common during this COVID-19 quarantine) and has had back to back 6 HOUR penalties. UNACCEPTABLE. So all the people saying that accidental disconnects aren't a problem, they are because the penalty times are completely unreasonable. If I get the boot from the server and have to wait 5 minutes, ok. But 6 damn hours, that is an unacceptable amount of time for any game, especially one I pay for and have put in nearly 1500 hours on.

biased poll is biased
If you DC because you don't like the circumstances, You should get punished. you ruined 4 peoples fun, that's bad.
If you DC for an emergency, go deal with the emergency. by the time you get back, the penalty is probably gone.
If you DC from internet stuff, it's not the end of the world. it starts low, go read a book or something. watch youtube, scroll reddit, IDC what, just wait it out
If you DC from internet stuff often, you need to get that checked out. if your internet is constantly like this, don't play a game like dbd where people can't just fill in for you like in COD or Overwatch.
there are other people in this match that paid for the game as well, let them enjoy it.

The DC penalty fails to address the wider spread issue of toxicity in the game. DC'ing is just a symptom of the disease. Addressing DCing doesn't eliminate the disease, it just poorly treats one of the symptoms in a manner that causes other side effects.
People DC for a reason. While I agree, there are cases where that reason is incredibly invalid (for example, they don't like a specific killer or map), as someone who has thousands of hours in this game, and have played both sides of the fence, the majority of the time I've experienced people DCing, it is because the game play by either the killer or their fellow teammates was atrocious and purposefully lacking any sense of sportsmanship.
People who play that way are what need to be addressed. Not the people trying to escape that behavior. I have yet to encounter another MMO that penalizes players for leaving a match...and I have played a lot of major MMOs. Additionally, people were already penalized for leaving matches in the form of massive PIP loss. Again, more 'punishment' than any other game I've ever encountered...where you not only lose your progress in that particular match, you regress.
The number of times I've had people purposely DC on me for my gameplay is incredibly low, even when DC's were reportedly rampant. Why? Because I play by objective and am actively mindful of other people's experience.
I would not be against a DC ban penalty on people who leave a match within the first few minutes, as those are likely the people leaving people they don't like the killer or the map. But simply locking people into a match with someone hellbent on playing toxically is promoting abusive, unsportsmanlike behavior. In my experience, since the ban there has been an increase in toxic, unenjoyable matches because people who play like sociopaths know there is no escape, unless you - as the victim of their abuse - want to accept a penalty and a loss of points/pips.
DBD needs to find a way to provide balance. To penalize actual in-game behavior that causes the majority of DC's that occurred/occur. I also think there are a number of other things that could be implemented that would help stave off DCing altogether:
- Allow ALL players to see ALL the nameplates of the players in the pre-match lobby (survivor AND killer), since name changing between matches is uncommon and this would be a first step to avoiding someone you encountered and didn't enjoy.
- Implement a block system. Every other MMO I've played allows you to block/avoid players you don't enjoy. Instituting a block system that would ensure you're not matched with someone would go a long way - knowing you'd never have to endure that person again.
- Shorten the time increments of the DC bans and institute a shorter ban cap so that players who feel it absolutely necessary due to another player's unsportsmanlike conduct have an out that doesn't ruin their night and so that accidental DC's have less of a negative effect.
Almost everyone who plays DBD paid for the game. I, personally, have paid for the game, the DLCs, many skins, and purchased the game for friends (albeit not recently because it's become less enjoyable). As a paid user of the game, your expectation of enjoyment is valid and your expectation that other players will be respectful of your time and your game is reasonable. DCing can be unenjoyable, but ignoring the fact that rampant DC's were a symptom of even less enjoyable game play is a mistake. This is not a simple issue and it demands a more holistic response from the devs.

Reporting this kind of thing does absolutely nothing. It is not addressed at all. I tried reporting people for toxic behavior and I got an email back days later asking for a clip so they could confirm. Umm, I don't stream so I of course had no clips to send. So bam nothing happened. I jumped though all the hoops, names, times, other players in the match, steamID yadda yadda. But no clip, no proof was the verdict. Reporting is a waste of time. DC penalty only treats a symptom of the actual problem and like Thisguuy83 said, it punishes the wrong people.

It punishes people who disconnect. Disconnecting is unhealthy for the game. If you only do it in situations in which it is somewhat justified (even though, in my opinion, it's never truly justified), you won't get long penalties. Waiting 5 minutes every time you actually get outclassed and bullied so siginificantly that you can't even progress the game by getting rid of pallets isn't really a big deal.
The penalty is necessary because there ARE people who ragequit and the penalty DOES hit them a lot harder than the people who occasionally have connection issues or get held hostage.

dcing is annoying but sometimes it’s no worse than just letting yourself die on the hook. I dc because i spawn next to the huntress with iri head and get camped till death so why not dc and make her mad for not getting the full 4K and then next I get face camped by a Micheal after running him for 2 minutes to get hit over a pallet as expected, and I don’t feel he deserves the kill so I dc and now I’m sitting here for 15 more minutes because killers get triggered to easily or believe camping is the best strat. Watch me get banned now that would be the cherry ontop of it all. Dc penalties should exist but I believe if possible they should be looked at again. But hey I might as well just get hooked and kill myself cause it would probably be easier

Much better to have them to keep sore losers away, than get rid of them and deal with petty kids.
I only hope they are improved to take into account disconnection through a power cut or something. Not sure if that's possible though.

Personally, I don't mind DC's- on Killer's side, it can be really funny, and it gives me more of a reason to meme around with Survivors. On Survivor's side, it's kinda the same thing- I play the game to have fun with friends. I don't mind if a rando DC's, or anything like that. To me, it means I can get out of a match faster and move on, and they can probably go and hopefully have more fun in their next game faster. I do wish there was more of a system to assist Survivors when a teammate does DC though, since I will admit, it does suck to sit in queue for a while only to get someone DC and barely get bloodpoints from it.
Tbh I don't think it ruins the game enough for me to be against it, and I just find it to be funnier then anything. I don't DC myself though- unless it's a Mori in the Offering's Screen when I've gone against like 3 in a row. (But at that point, can you blame a guy for wanting a break?)
Though I will say OP, might wanna work on your wording next time. Not the best way to constructively talk about this.

Killer's just AFK and tab out, Survivor's just run into killer and die on first hook. All it does it waste extra time. Steps should be more focused on stopping people wanting to dc in the first place. Adjust meta perks both sides already.

I think addressing tunneling and camping would prevent a TON of DCs. For example, if a killer is camping a hook, pause the timer, etc.

I think the disconnect penalty needs to go or be a lot more realistic.
I live in the country, my internet isn't always that great and some days I have no issues, hell I will go a week without issues sometimes, and other days I can play 4 matches then have internet issues for 2 matches and then no issues for another 5 matches and then have issues again.
Its not my router, it's not my xbox, it's just that I live in the country and the internet isn't that great. Does that mean I shouldn't play a game I love? That I should just give up and never come back to this game because now due to a day or 5 of bad connection I can't play for 6 hours, 24 hours or 48 hours?
Disconnecting on purpose isn't okay and it is unfair to the other plays, I have played a ton of games where others disconnected for one reason or another, but my friend and I kept going even knowing we were going to lose, but I still feel the penalty is to harsh and needs to be corrected lowered or removed completly, expecally since my friends on the PS4 are getting penalties from the frame rate crashing issues and my pc friends are getting penalties due to an unknown error that keeps popping up.
I love this game, I have spent money on this game, I have convinced friends to play this game, I don't want to give up on it because I'm being punished for something out of my control.

If the devs aren't going to optimize the game for base consoles so they can run Lery's, Hawkins and Midwich at 60fps, players shouldn't be punished for leaving unplayable matches.

Its fine to punish people who actually click on the "DC" button, but you shouldn't be punished when your internet cuts out for 2 seconds causing you to disconnect. Is it really that hard to program it to only punish you when you actually click on the "disconnect" button?

My issue is that if someone wants to DC as in rage quit they can just kill themselves on the hook. With the DC penalty in place people who are disconnected by dropped internet, intrupted WIFI, of the game crashing/kicking them out for whatever reason get pearlized.

The onlyyy thing I would change is how the penalty applies to all in the party (at least on PS4), I shouldn't be penalized if a friend looses connection or has a hissy fit, we're not married.

DC abuse used to be bad. Yes there are ways round it technically like hook suicide but it doesn't feel as common now due to the penalties. If you survivor DC not by accident either you're entitled and can't handle it so you deserve the penalty or else you're having a bad frustrating day and the break might actually help

Not totally remove but decrease time. I must admit that I rage quit sometimes. The thing is we gotta admit that this game is broken. There are times you're gonna get mad because there are times where you're not supposed to get hit but gets hit anyway. Or there are times players are toxic kept on teabagging or face camping you. It is not worth it to stay in the game in this kind of situation for me.
Also, internet here in my country sucks big time. Even if I pay lots of money for it, I get fluctuating signal sometimes.

If there was a way to actually monitor intentional or unintentional dcs then I'd say no dc penalty for accidental or something outside of your control.
Intentional dc should get a harsher penalty imo. People need to learn to not throw a fit about losing on either side. Non dced players on a game need more rewards as well
Since ots nearly impossible to monitor which way it is id say it should mostly stay the same but increase penalties quitting games rather than cutting internet
