Math of the rift

As the rift closes tomorrow I'm trying to complete my last few challenges and I realized that I'll only reach tier 63 with all challenges done. So I decided to do some math on how long it would take to complete the rift. If you see anything wrong with my math feel free to correct me.

There's 393 rift fragments which we get by completing challenges, so there's 307 fragments we need to obtain from gameplay.

It's 800xp for every fragment, so 307 x 800 = 245,600xp total we need to get.

Now it's important to note that for the first killer and survivor game of the day you get 300xp each, or 600xp total. For this calculation, we'll assume that you played both sides every day. So...

600 x 70 (days the rift is open) = 42,000xp

245,600 - 42,000 = 203,600xp

Now we got that out of the way we now have the task of calculating how much do one gets in a match. Of course match time varies from game to game so for this calculation we'll be generous and assume that each match lasts for 10 minutes as that is the cut off point when you stop getting exp in a match (I'm not 100% sure on this point so if anyone can confirm this I'll be grateful).

According to the DBD unofficial wiki, you get 1xp for every second in the match, so...

1 x 600 (seconds in 10 minutes) = 600xp per match

203,600 ÷ 600 = 339.333 matches

As we earlier stated that a match is 10 minutes...

339.333 x 10 = 3393.33 minutes or 56.55 hours

So in conclusion, it takes around 57 hours of GAMEPLAY to complete the rift assuming you completed all the challenges.

Of course there are a few things to consider:

- I didn't include xp for emblems in the calculations.

- This assumes that you play perfectly to maximize xp gains, which we all know won't happen in DBD.

- This assumes you play every day to get the 600 bonus xp.

- This is only game time. Time spent in matchmaking or in loading screens will add on to the above figure.

With that I have provided a rough figure of how long it takes to complete the rift. How do you feel about this? Myself I wish they make it so that you would complete the rift around the same time you complete all the challenges but I didn't play DBD as much around the start of the rift so the blame probably lies with me. I would love to hear your opinions on this.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I assume that you completed all the challenges during these 57 hours. Of course if you didn't then it would take a bit longer.

My issue with the rift is that challenges should've been worth more in progress.

Did you count the matches that are required for completing the challenges in your calculations?

The idea is they want you to pay $$$ or play the game non-stop. This isn’t about your fun it’s about their profit.

At least the money goes towards extensive testing and bug fixes.....oh wait

Just don't buy the rift pass if you aren't going to play the game enough.

This is starting to come off as a scam. Yes, a SCAM.

It's ridiculous just HOW MUCH they expect you to play outside of challenges, sorry. If I throw down money, I don't want to ALSO have to spend an insane amount of time to get all I.. kind of paid for?

We should be done with the rift when we get all the challenges. Period.

To those telling us we shouldn't buy if we aren't going to play enough, really? People with lives? Ohrite, yeah, git gud our fault for having a life but FIFTY SEVEN ######### HOURS OUTSIDE OF CHALLENGES? No. Just ######### no.

My partner was done with the rift like a WEEK before challenges were completed last rift. This time she struggled to get all the bits for the hag ( With about the same amount of playtime ) and just said screw the rest I'm done.

This ain't a stupid mobile game where they try to force you to pay real money if you want to get anywhere. Or is it?

Also thanks to @Cancan71 for doing the math. This is outrageous.

57 hours... in 70 days. Less than an hour a day. It's not difficult, even if you have a busy life.

57 hours ON TOP of the time you need to put in to get all the challenges.

    Reading comprehension, man.

No. You already earn fragments through gameplay while doing challenges. If you complete all challenges within these 57 hours, you've completed the rift. If you complete the challenges in 50 hours, you've got to put in 7 hours more.

Effectively, they did, because they just calculated how many matches it would take to earn the Fragments that the challenges don't give you automatically. Presumably most of those matches would be spent also pursuing the challenges.

That is a point worth noting, though, that the 57 hours calculated above is the total time it would take to get all necessary fragments, not the time you would spend grinding XP on top of the time you already spent doing challenges, as some in this thread have wrongly assumed. I calculated at one point that the Tome would take at least 156 games to complete, if you complete every challenge in the minimum number of games that it is technically possible to complete it in. So theoretically, almost half of the matches needed to finish the Rift would be spent working on challenges, and in practice, it would probably be a much higher proportion.

hmmm I didn't play dbd for 50 hours past completing the rift, I played it for about 70 hours for the 70 days it was open, that is 1 hour a day, average or so. I got tier 70 before i finished the tome levels, I also paid for the battle pass with the 1000 auric cells I got from the first rift.

You forget that some of these required 3-5 times if you got what you needed each mach. so not only would you get at minimum 3 rift shards (I'd get about 400 xp maybe 500 per match). In addition to the 3 shards for completing the challenge. then say it took another 2 matches to get the next 3 rift shard challenge and one more shard plus more towards another shard, that is 3+3+4 = 10 shards in 5 matches.

For instance 5 unbroken emblems of gold or better takes atleast 5 matches, at minimum in a general sense that will be 3 shards from match XP, then another 3 shards for the challenge. Now next challenge being done is escape the trial 2 times through the hatch, this is done in 2 matches which will at minimum get you generally 1 more shard. so that's 4 shards ontop of the 6 shards just for the 2 challenges. Your math IS correct, but your logic is flawed. you forgot to add up how many optimal matches where you got everything you needed without missing while working on the tome itself. I ended up having to grind out another 50 shards max because I don't play optimally every match after I completed the tome.

I have about 90 hours registered on steam in the last 2 weeks. I have the rift on level 66 (the clown knife one). I have almost all challenges completed.

    Some thoughts:

    1. There are some challenges that require multiple tries to get done.
    2. You have not access to all challenges from day 1. They released them slowly.
    3. Multiple challenges require non-default characters so it's difficult for players that do not have enough hours spent or that only play the base game.
    4. The tome has the same boost on bp as a bp bonus day, but it don't encourage farming as much.

I think the rift gets easier the earlier you start it because some challenges depends on luck, like the "open the hatch 2 times" or the "do X and escape". I spent 1 entire day doing the hatch one because unlucky spawns, others opened it, etc.

I would improve the challenges to encourage different playstyles like some quests did:

    • Go for an "open the hatch" run
    • Chase with big falls
    • Take protection hits

Repair generators, escape or being in chase X seconds doesn't look like a "challenge". In my opinion it's more fun a few difficult challenges that a bunch of easy ones. BUT this would mean that the rift would need a lot of "nothing specific to do" games. My best solution to this problem: give the player 2 quests at the same time, one that's really difficult and the other the easy one. This can be made in a lot of ways:

    1. Forcing an ultra challenge for each tome (depending in which tome are you, you have a different ultra challenge).
    2. Special nodes that let you pick a different type of quest that does not stack with the normal one.
    3. 2 quests slots and the player choose the completion strategy (I think this is the worst tho).

You are right. I assumed that you complete all the challenges during the 57 hours you spend playing the game to get the remaining rift fragments. I'll update the OP to make this more clear

You should note that it's 57 hours of game time. You still have to spend time in matchmaking, which adds a few extra hours on top of the 57 hours.

I assumed with these calculations that by the time you are finished with getting all the rift fragments from xp, you would have completed all the challenges. Of course I know that you might not have done all the challenges so it would take a little longer.

In the devs defense on this one. It is optional to buy the rift, its not needed. you can play the free track to see how far you get the day before it closes to decide wheather its worth buying it not.

Secondly the first tomb was originally "complete all challenges, completes the rift", but due to complaints or something it was changed.

Additionally, its not complete the challenges and then spend 50+ hours to complete the rift, as you'll get many xp points while your playing matches to complete the challenges. so in reality its 50 - 60+ hours of gameplay (assuming you complete all challenges in that time which you should) in 70 days, which is over 2 months.

2 - 2 and 1/2 months is more than enough time to spend 50-60 hours on a game. and if its not, guess what, dont buy it.

its not a scam in any way

I ate a lot of downtime through this because I could only play during the day, and killer queue times could at times match my time in-game. Most of the challenges came easily, but I feel like the variables involved for most people would fluff up the extra time required to 70-80 hours. I know the time to do the challenges and the "extra" time overlap to some degree, but with this tome missing the initial boost the first tome got, I feel like I had 10+ more tiers to grind through. I feel like I played at least an hour a day and still had to buy three tiers at the end, whereas I played the same amount for the first tome and finished it several days before it closed.
