Why SHOULD I Help You?
Now, before anyone bites my head off, this is off the back of a few unpleasant experiences and I know that not every game is like this, but the fact that it's brewing this type of a feeling is important to discuss.
I know that I have said before that "last game shouldn't mean anything" but that statement is getting harder to justify as of late. Same with this attitude. And there is no "taking a break from the game" that can fix this issue, because simply put, it's becoming more frequent.
So, amidst all of the recent questionable matchmaking, I've been paired with some rather low ranks. Not an unwelcome change from being constantly put into a red killer with green companions at purple ranks, but what happened in these last few games is:
I have been completely abandoned on a hook against a killer with Thanataphobia for some minor, insignificant generator repairs and two bits of healing to cancel two stacks of Thana. Dying on first and de-pipping, only to find that the ones I saved off earlier hooks are ranks 17 and 18.
I later have a game where there are 3 David Kings, two with flashlights and one with a toolbox. They get slaughtered and I manage to get most of their unhooks, only for the last one to get slugged. I manage to stealth as I have all game and manage to pick him up from dying TWICE before the coward leads the killer to me and then proceeds to do absolutely nothing, while I do a generator, dodge and run the killer for the next two minutes before getting honourably downed and hooked. Messaging me (Xbox player, for context here.) as I'm about to die on second hook, and gets a lucky escape.
They then proceed to call me a "sook" and later a child because I called them out on their blatant teaming/cheating and said that they shouldn't have messaged me as I assumed initially they had a farming thing going. They even tried to provoke me into using explicit language, which is part of my normal speech, I refrain from using online in text because of mods and bans. I'd love nothing more than to warn my fellow Xbox brethren about this toxic scum with a good ol' Name & Shame, but I won't.
So, here's my questions, as a solo survivor: Why SHOULD I start helping you lot when this is the treatment I can expect? Why should I put my life on the line when it won't get reciprocated or appreciated? Why should I start believing that this game is truly a 4v1, rather than a 1v3v1 as other survivors are proving more and more? How is your life and your health more important than a stealth/chaser emblem rating, or another generator completed? How does helping you help me any more?
Why should I care?
Please, convince me. I've ditched my emotions and empathy enough throughout my life. I'm not seeking validation, or consolidation. I just want a reason.

Treat others as you wish to be treated. That's my motto in DBD. I save people because I'd want to be saved. Whether I'm saved or not is irrelevant.

If that's your natural instinct to not go for the save then don't. If you think that you're better off not saving someone then do that. But even with low rank team mates, saving someone does one thing for you. It buys you time.
I for one haven't been having bad matchmaking with team mates on Xbox (as for the killers rank is a different story).

Because I'm too pretty to die here!
And like you said in your first sentence, why punish someone not involved because someone earlier was a jerk to you? Sure, this person might also be a jerk or they might be super nice and they want to play the game the right way.
I'd rather give someone the benefit of the doubt by playing the right way than punish some innocent player who would have been a great teammate just because a previous game soured me.

You can - and I don't mean this sarcastically at all - maintain a sense of superiority by resisting the urge to play the "small" way. Bloodpoints are fine, but knowing you're better than someone else... well, it's priceless.

I try to help others, because I would also want them to help me. Sometimes, they do, sometimes they do not. It's especially sad when you put yourself in danger to save someone, but when you need them, they don't even try to help. On the other hand, sometimes people could have just escaped, but decide to risk themselves to save me. So it's a mixed bag. All in all, I would say try to help others, because they might also help you. I feel especially connect and more willing to help someone that has helped me before.
Like, I was the first one hooked and the killer went for someone else. Another survivor comes from the other side of the map to save me and they do, but the killer comes back and goes for them. I heal and see them being downed. I feel a sense of loyalty to try to help them out, since they did the same for me. Problem is not everyone thinks this way.

As solo? I'd run deliverance and left behind. Save someone for the deliverance proc. If it's not up, assume you will die on your first hook. Because in plenty of games, that will be the case.

Find some good survivors to play with. Dont really need comms but finding a group of players that know what they are doing is a huge advantage. I myself like the tension of solo but am really thinking of finding people to group up with. I just dont do the comm thing.

Solo survivor is a brutal, awful experience, and I completely empathise with everything you've just said.
Now, as other people have pointed out, the motto "Treat other people as you wish to be treated" comes to mind, but I justify it slightly differently.
The reason why you should save others and help your team out is because then you can know with absolute certainty that you did the best you could, and got outplayed by the killer or bullshitted by the survivors. If you don't save people then you become part of the problem- the phrase "You either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become a villain" springs to mind.
You could go on and not save people, ditching empathy and feelings and just try to bust through gens, or you could keep playing how you're playing and not be the very issue you complain about. Basically, you won't become a hypocrite.
Or for another explanation, you won't get any altruism points or benevolence emblem, preventing you from ranking up and finding survivors who know what they're doing more than 10% of the time. You need 7-10 points to pip at red ranks, meaning you'll need a gold in lightbringer and chaser provided you last long enough to get a bronze in unbroken, or die fast enough to get a bronze in benevolence. Trying to pip whilst ignoring an entire category isn't the easiest, and this means you'll safety pip very often or even de-rank, ensuring you never escape the hell of purple ranks.

I would like to have as a teammate @PigMainClaudette
I try to do a bit of everything in game but it's frustrating to be the only one doing it
But I'm low ranked and only good on gens (at this point)

That's why I won't play with randos.
Your attitude is like a killer bringing a mori after facing a tough swf. You are punishing others for something that happened in the previous games.
Also they sounded new, new people make mistakes. And if they kept getting hit after you unhooked them, perhaps your saves were unsafe.

You should do it if you're feeling up to it. You don't have to.
I usually base helping other people off 3 main things:
-If somebody is in trouble that was actually a helpful/funny player or was really pulling weight on the team
-If it feels relatively low danger or not (if I could do it without any punishment)
-If I've been having "rough games" (not just me being in a bad mood, but if I'm constantly being camped/tunneled/abandoned by team mates and I just want to escape for once)
But I've always been under the impression that DbD is based around the premise of trying to fight for survival, and not always being able to save everybody, and therefore having to leave people behind sometimes.

Because I'm not like those other guys and I'll be the one with the clutch bt save on you no matter how dire things become.

It's really up to you! All I got to say is
Points/Emblems
Could help out/save the match
Possibly makes players less angries and you receive less hate (but who cares?)

Funny thing is that I usually say that, but it is getting harder and harder lately. I want to be a nice guy, even as a killer. If I completely smash a team, I might farm the last two so they don't feel too bad about the slaughter. It's not MY fault that a group of below rank 15's got put against my Pig. And one of them DC'd early.

Well, if you're on Xbox, I have two lower ranked accounts I use to play with friends who don't play as much. I'll jump on a bit later and find the numbers that go with one of them.
And no, it is not to bully low ranked killers for anyone else reading this that way. I use underpowered perks for a reason and I don't want my mates going up against MY killers, since at time of post, I'm in purple ranks.

Sometimes, you just have to accept that you're the LeBron.
I know, it's annoying/gets tiring. The life of a solo survivor. There is a 25% you're going to be the most efficient survivor. Embrace it. Heavy is the head that wears the crown.

Normally I really like the idea of being a villain, but I can actually see what you mean about being a hypocrite. Becoming the very thing I seek to destroy, so that others don't have to experience what I have but instead sharing that suffering to others.
Maybe I need to play some killer for a bit. Paint another Warhammer 40k army before coming back too.

@PigMainClaudette this is how I see it
1 respect for main pig
2 you can’t count on peeps to do totems or gens.
3 if you unhook noob # 123 he/she might not do gens but probably will end up in chase
4 they will run from killer = he’s not chasing you so you can do gens and have a chance at a escape
btw

I try, but when I'm literally ditched to die on first hook, or actually saving people who all go off and die anyway, only to be ratted out by the last guy, then it's kinda hard to do anything.
I help where I can, but my patience can only stretch so far and my skills are only so capable. My current build is also a "ninja vanish" build using Q&Q, Lithe and Dance with Me. Super fun, but not the "second chance meta" a lot of killers complain about, so not a lot I can do there if players aren't willing to help themselves.

Because 1 person cannot win a full DBD match by themselves. Part of your self preservation is keeping those potatoes alive as long as possible - even if it's only to be cannon fodder as you do the objectives necessary to escape.

I am on xbox... same name
I am in the green ranks on killer (Pig main) was near red last month

Yeah, I use a different name. Felt that maybe using my Xbox name will give some people to do things that specifically annoy me. I'll add you on my accounts when I jump on. My main one is currently Purple Survivor, and unfortunately Yellow on Killer, because of a grind in Survivor Archives and that one reset. I'm building back up to my usual green ranked killer area.

Will do

If they are rank 17 and 18 and the hours back that up cut them slack. If two are low rank and only one is experienced they may have their hands full just trying to keep their buddies alive and unfortunately that doesn't always translate to telling those low rankers crouching in a corner to save. You should help them because doing the right thing influences others just like their behavior is influencing you to be less altruistic. If they are new they will definitely pick up on what a teammate is supposed to do by having it done to them.
Also, you'll run into that player that will come back for you in the basement with the gate open but not if you left him slugged on the ground for an absurd amount of time to do a gen. I can't tell you how many times I went for a risky save on a player that stuck out their neck for me. Do good, it will come back to you.

They got scared of Thanataphobia. I was on a hook in the open, while they were crouching up in the middle of the Sanctum of Wrath and they LEFT ME TO DIE.
Two minues. TWO WHOLE MINUTES I sat on that hook and they did nothing to save me. Not once did I see either of them attempt to come for a rescue, as the only other competent survivor was getting chased.
I have made those risky saves before, and I have been rewarded for it. But the point is that the reciprocation of my gestures is becoming lessened every single game. It's as I said; I want to be a nice guy in the game, I want to be helpful to people. It's why I ran Botany Knowledge in a build when I had both of my brothers telling me "just swap off it, it doesn't do that much." when to me it was the gesture and the safety of a second health state after a hook. And I was also running Self-Care on that build. People aren't showing me that kindness, so I'm starting to doubt whether or not I should keep doing it. And that's the problem. I'm starting to doubt my own core values because of other people.

Vote up if you Googled "sook" ☺️

See, i fully understand your situation. I run an ambulance build, literally specced for saving people fast, safe and effectively. I have done some saves i'm bloody proud of, and in the same games been ditched quicker than a justin bieber album in your christmas stocking.
It sucks. It's frustrating and it makes you want to reach through the multiverse and scramble #NoobSMakker158 with your ethernet chord.
Sometimes yeah, i think 'Well fudge you all" But the problem is, yes you can be utterly self serving and i'd honestly not blame you, but I can only see that making matters worse when you do end up in a match with one or two genuine decent players who understands that you really are stronger as a team. If they don't see you as a team player, you're effectively mirroring the people cheesing you off right now, and why are they going to risk their necks for you? A lot of games are sucky due to our team mates, but the ones that come together like a plan devised by the ATeam themselves...oh those games are worth their weight in gold dude!
If you choose to just say 'to hell with you all" i could totally understand and if nothing else you might have a few less stressful games. However I'd encourage you to keep at it for those worthwhile matches every now and then :)

Matches have been better tonight. Somehow painting some Necrons all day and playing a bit of killer really helped calm me down.
I'm in a weird inbetween spot now where Im playing for myself, but I'll still go for saves. I'm not sticking my neck out for anyone though. I'm in it for me and me only, but I won't forsake others.
