Taking Jason 'Voorhees' out of 'Camp Crystal Lake'.
I was thinking about all this talk of a Friday 13th chapter with Jason Voorhees with the likely map being Camp Crystal Lake.
With the whole franchise being wrapped up in legal red tape, it's questionable when thinking about a Friday 13th chapter inclusion.
Victor Miller wrote the original film which included the elements Pamela Voorhees, her deceased son Jason Voorhees and the Camp Crystal Lake location.
But is it possible to continue the franchise and associated media, without those vital components?
I believe it's possible.
The mask-wearing, machete-weilding, councillor-killing maniac we all know and love was not featured in the original film. And the fact we are supposed to believe he survived drowning as a child and lived off wild animals and lake water for a couple of decades is also ridiculous.
So, in a very ambitious move, we take away a presently problematic part of the lore: this individual is not Pamela Voorhee's son. We don't acknowledge it anyway.
This means he did not survive drowning at Camp Crystal Lake. The boy, Pamela Voorhees' son drowned. Or at least we don't have to mention it.
So then we have distanced ourselves from Pamela, the Voorhees name and the significance of Camp Cryatal Lake.
This individual was not Pamela's son. This individual was not a Voorhees. This individual did not survive drowning at Camp Cryatal Lake.
The original films are always going to be there, and fans are familiar with the character's origin. But I'm thinking about going forward, and whilst not completely disregarding the previous origin layout, we can stay familiar without indulging in the key points of the first Friday 13th film.
While it is dishearting to not be able to acknowledge the character's original authentic backstory with the famous location, it is indeed possible to continue using the iconic character who first appeared in Friday 13th part 2.
So here's my far-fetched rewrite of 'Jason'.
He never had a purpose. A hulking individual, who was living a solitary life in the woods. He was an outcast, someone who didn't connect with further society. He didn't have the same drives as 'normal people'. Disfigured physically and deranged mentally, he literally hid his face from the outside world. One night, he witnessed a horrific murder. Something awoke inside the man. A feeling he had never felt before. Somebody said his name: Jason.
He hadn't heard anyone say his name in such a long time. He began hearing the voice of the victim in his head. He finally had a purpose, to take the lives of anyone he encountered.
Over the years, Jason killed many unsuspecting victims who dared venture in to the dense woodland. His infamy became the stuff of urban legend. His legacy was confused with other scary tales and shared over the burning wood of campfires.
Eventually Jason extended his killing grounds to outside the woods. His power had increased and he was unstoppable. Nobody would be safe from his lust for murder. He became the most notorious serial killer of all time.
His murderous reputation and supernatural abilities naturally caught the attention of the Entity.
Jason now had a new voice in his head...and nobody would survive.
--------------------------------
So we have our Jason chapter, with a killer, a survivor and a map.
So obviously we have Jason. Our survivor? Could be the Tommy Jarvis or even Jason Goes To Hell's Creighton Duke. As map we could have the renamed Camp Forest Green from Friday 13th VI: Jason Lives or one of the locations from the later films.
Cheers.

How about Jason X? The space one. Yes, the movie was freaking awful, but Jason is still Jason, and I would personally love a space-themed map.
1 -
Absolutely it's a possibility. If we can get Jason by cutting corners, I'm all for it.
But I'm not sure how BHVR feel about the prospect of space.

Funny enough, the entire name is fair game. "Jason Voorhees" can't be copyrighted on its own. An encephalopathic boy named Jason can. So technically, big, undead, hockey mask Jason Voorhees is fine keeping the name as long as the figure out the window to use the iconography to begin with.
1 -
If Jason Voorhees can indeed be included, that's even better.

It would give for a lot of possibilities though. Obviously, it would be an indoor map, but a space ship one. So you could look out the windows and only see space all around you. No Earth, no Sun, no nothing. You're literally nowhere, and you're stuck with a killer onboard. That's horrifying. Lockers could be modified to wardrobes to fit the map. Survivors on the last hook could be yeeted out of the ship by the means of the hook. Just imagine repairing a gen, and looking out through the window and seeing a dead Dwight floating away.

Also worth noting that the newly released board game only mentions F13 characters and license from New Line and Warner Bros, and makes no mention of horror Inc or Miller. So maybe the remake is the loophole right now. Also, doesn't dbd already have a bit of experience with WB?

Why does this generator glow in the dark? Why is my hair falling out?
Damn space gennies!!!

If we can keep the lore of Jason pretty vague with no connection to the events and locations in the original film, adding a killer called Jason could be feasible.
A bit crap that there isn't full intellectual freedom, but sometimes you have to make the best with what you can or have nothing.
1 -
The board game description also mentions Camp Crystal Lake but not the Voorhees name (I believe).

The back of the box shows a card with a tombstone reading Jason Voorhees with a bloody handprint on it. They do seem to be a little cagey about his name, but it IS in there.

It's like making a hoe a housewife.

I've just looked that up. Interesting.
Maybe just steering clear of Pamela is acceptable.
0 -
I should also mention, it's not QUITE released yet, so who knows, it could also get clipped by a cease and desist.

Considering the devs tendency of renaming all their characters with some sort of codename, I dont think theyd have a problem. Jason would just end up getting a similar name to Freddy's "The Nightmare". Would kinda suck if we cant get the iconic camp though.
0 -
That's a possibility.
The whole situation is a headache.
It had to happen with possibly the biggest horror franchise with a popular game.
Why couldn't it of just been Stage Fright, Killer Clowns From Outer Space or Mad Man.

The camp, in general, is fair game. As in, a map called Camp Crystal Lake. The first version with Higgins Haven is probably a no go. The later ones may or may not be possible. If the theory is correct, then the remake camp would be open. In any case, we wouldn't get the same map fidelity as f13 the game had.
0 -
If that's the case, it would be an easy workaround.
Irritating but not impossible.

It doesn't necessarily look that way with the way the board game is credited. Maybe Cunningham gave WB and New Line an open enough license that they didn't need anything extra from him to produce games based on the remake, thus not having horror Inc credited in the copyright boilerplate. Licenses can often be not very straightforward, so who knows?

If we even get the remake Jason, I'll be happy.
I mean we have 2010 Freddy and I hardly notice it isn't the Freddy I know and love.
1 -
I definitely regret not having Englund's Freddy, but personality was always half of Freddy's appeal. Jason doesn't really have a personality aside from the famous Hodder head tilt. So I agree, I don't think remake J would make a huge difference here vs OG. I'd always rather see the originals, but I think it's less impactful here. On the side, we also have an entire game full of OG Jason, which never could use the remake one, so it kinda works in a cosmic balance sense.

Thats completely fine honestly. Its not like the movie versions of Haddonfield or Springwood were exact replicas of what we have here. They'd obviously need to make the map work for DBD, so has to include things survivors could loop/vault and things that would make sense for a pallet to be between.

True. And maybe BHVR will just cook up their own approved cosmetics like they've done with Pig and Tapp.
0 -
what the deal having jason in? liek i say i'm the only one who thinks he the most over rated 80s killer.
0 -
It's just the popularity of the franchise that makes Jason's inclusion important.
It wouldn't matter so much if this game had just say Michael Myers as the sole licensed killer, but as we have others including Freddy and Leatherface, there really is a hole in the unholy horror trinity.
1 -
well i was bugger fan of Michael Myers and Freddy more i guess.thing with F13 it was more gore porn then scary to me feels like BHVR getting they hand on the franchise more trouble than it's worth.
edit and candyman i like his movie so i hope it him we don't have a hook killer
0 -
Well hopefully tomorrow we'll get a surprise. This had been hyped up and the speculation has been rampant.
But whoever it is, the fan reaction is going to be interesting 🤭

Myers set the tone for 80s slasher, the teenagers terrorized by the killer, and the "pure" final girl surviving, but Jason cemented the cinematography, the formula, and the excess. The killer using a variety of weapons and environments for unique kills. And the monster-as-legend trope. He was also far more consistently enduring than Mikey. And let's face it, a hockey mask is way more badass than Bill shatner's pasty face.
3 -
like my edit i hope for candyman i mean they can use mirror for him to teleport map could be Cabrini Green housing projects and survivor Helen Lyle.
0 -
If it was somehow Jason he better be able to disrespect pallets and breakable walls like no other.
0 -
If they have got Candyman, I would like to see a bee swarm some how used in his abilities.
0 -
like i said not scary just gore porn. Also i don't think his power would be use different weapons.still sound like more trouble than it's worth.
let face more facts Myers scarier and jason.
0 -
I'd be happy with any major or semipro horror players - Jason, Candyman, Pinhead, Jeb Morningside, Pumpkinhead, hell, even Chucky (oops, forgot Pennywise) . The Thing works for me, too. Alien and Predator just don't fit dbd to me, and while they definitely have horror movie chops, they're at least as much scifi as well.
0 -
i can see bee being part of abilities but i really see them using mirrors too.
0 -
I was just explaining why Jason was popular in horror, not arguing the level of fear or what his power would be.
Regardless of your feelings about him, there is no killer more iconic than Jason. There was a study once about trademarks and recognition, and you can take a hockey mask to any country in world and show it around, and people will recognize it as Jason. Myers and Freddy wouldn't be far behind, but they still don't have that level of recognition out in the public conscious.
Getting him into the game WOULD be a major coup for behavior, whether you like him or hate him, just like Myers, LF, and Freddy were.
1 -
At this point with all the speculation, I think candyman would be a letdown. Its too obvious.
I dont consider predator a horrer movie. It was action all the way. Alien however was a horror movie just set in the emptiness of space. Although i think event horizon was scarier in terms of fear in space
1 -
Wait are we getting jason?
0 -
i like Alien and Predator too but i also don't think there fit in this game.I'm 100% fan of jason i hate to see him cropped up to fit because of all the bad word that been going with f13 would suck for the fan
still pissed with the crop with ghostface and say i feel like it is a crop no sidney prescott no woodsboro map just it own character i still feel with out scream ghostface mask would not be as popular.
0 -
Well tomorrow we'll see if Jason is indeed coming to DBD. To be honest, the only other killers who have real mainstream name value are Chucky, Alien and Pennywise.
Pinhead (and I'm a big fan of Hellraiser) and Candyman don't carry that weight. Both are credible inclusions, but aren't groundbreaking.
0 -
who know at this point i wouldn't be hyped for it if he did he be cropped up ver of him self not really him.
1 -
Ok:)

If Jason does get included, the horror and gaming internet communities are going to go wild. It really would be big and would open conversation for future media.
If it's anyone else, we'll get the usual wide-eyed, gaping-mouth cheek holders posting reveal reaction YouTube videos and telling people to 'hit the like button'.
1 -
I think we should be fully prepared for some 'cropping' of his character, at least with the connection to his mother Pamela and the (almost) drowning...and that's even if do get Jason.
0 -
still hope for candyman but who knows maybe chucky he got a game like dbd on steam but the game does not look good.
0 -
I'm excited for the cosmetic possibilities... Jason X body with F13 2 head!!! :)
0 -
If do get a hockey mask Jason, and have bag head and Jason X as cosmetics...I'll be a happy camper.
And even if it's remake 2009 Jason...we can still get that version of bag head as an alt.
We'll have to keep out fingers and toes crossed for his one.
0 -
That's true, and it fits with the killer having 2 outfit options, according to the leak sites.
0 -
I was just going to mention how funnily enough, Victor DOESN'T own the rights to the "Voorhees" name or CCL but sadly people already mentioned it. ;_;
0 -
Well if that's the case and it's just Pamela and the boy who drowned...I think we can get by in DBD.
1 -
The first movie mentions jason as the boy who drowned. There's nothing pointing to hockey mask jason. So it seems like they would need to give hockey mask jason a different origin story or none at all.
0 -
Yeah, I can sadly see Jason getting about as much backstory as Demo. Whatever would help get him in though!
