A proposed change to all future cosmetic contests...
Due to the mixed reception I have seen of the new Claudette set, I propose one simple change to the judging criteria:
Make the cosmetics fit with the characters.
Looking at the previous winners, I can see why this would fit them.
For instance, the Elephant costume makes sense for Clown. It is a disguise he could use to get closer to people so he could incapacitate and kill them.
The Feng skin makes sense. She is Chinese, so the probability of going to a festival makes sense, and it would not surprise me to see an outfit like that in real life at a Chinese festival.
Now look at the winners this time...
The Legion Skin makes... no sense the more I think about it. How does a group of teens make an advanced LED mask in the middle of a backwater canadian town? How would they even conceptualize this in their mind? They are from the late 90s, when the internet didn't exist in those kind of places... Frank would probably never wear this, because he wants to be imposing. Suzie might make this, but even then it isn't her style. Julie is a poet, and Joey doesn't create anything... so it just does not have the soul of the Legion in mind when making this.
Claudette is a shy shut-in who is obsessed with botany. This new set has the opposite feel: of a confident alley cat. That is literally NEAs personality.
Do not get me wrong, the effort put into each of these submissions is incredible, and the artists are to be commended for their work. It just does not feel like the Judges were taking the personalities of the characters into account.
This is why I propose this addition to the judging criteria.

I agree, cosmetics should meet the personality of the characters. The Legion Skin I didn't mind, since it fits with the whole edgy teen tech vibe.
Btw, Feng Min is Chinese not Korean.

Claudette win i think because it mirrors the cosmetic department's latest trend in less clothes equals more money.
I would like the devs to choose the finalists with some kind of poll that the community can vote on to choose the winners

That may seem like a good idea on paper, but the problem lies on the fact that if the artist has a huge fan base/following they're most likely going to win the poll.

I'd like to also add in a change to help people with less than amazing artistic ability to participate in these contests.
Allow the ability to gain outside assistance or provide a separate category for the artistically challenged.
While it may not be the case, it seems like only good artists will win these contests when you consider the past winners and finalists.
I dunno about anyone else, but I feel less inclined to participate in the next one when I feel like I'll have no chance thanks to my inability to color within the lines.

Not really? She is a person who would probably go to those, since they would be relevant events for everyone involved. Not only is it a spiritual thing, but it is something that brings people together. They have these kinds of things all over the world. From Asia, to Europe, to the US. Think of it like a fairground in the US.
It certainly makes more sense than the new Claudette cosmetic set.

What makes Feng Min seem like a person who would go to cultural festivals? Her description paints her as a die-hard video game addict/Twitch streamer/esports professional who shut out her family increasingly as she got older and became entrenched in video games.

Because it would involve another person in the waiver agreement making the inclusion of the skin complicated, which is something BHR doesn't want to be part of.

I agree to some extent, but would argue that getting a fresh take on characters in cosmetics is a great thing even if it wouldn't necessarily fit them.
I like the description from one of Hag's cosmetics that described it as 'One of many possible lives stolen from her', or something like that. To that extent I see cosmetics as an alternate version of characters so I don't mind them being different to what they would normally be expected to wear. Also Susie's Scarlet Swarm outfit talks about her stabbing a guy despite lore showing her as less active, which is an alternate universe of sorts as it contradicts her shy nature (Could debate that is just retconning but I disagree). If that means Claudette is outgoing and actually has decent fashion sense, so be it. I couldn't see Frank turning down that sick LED mask either, if given the option.
I agree that the community could have a larger input with deciding, probably when the finalists are chosen with a poll to decide.

I didn't focus on that so much because that would be admitting my skill isn't great in this regard, at least compared to the winners. XD
But seriously, another good idea. Maybe if you have a partner, the reward would be split between you?
That, or perhaps, maybe a better idea is that they look at the concept instead of just judging based off of how nice it looks. There were a lot of great concepts that probably didn't stand a chance because the creators cant illustrate it well.

with claudette, people aren't just black and white. she might be a shut in but that doesn't mean she doesn’t like to dress up from time to time.

Also, although they're quite nice skins on the surface - making the designs go against the lore of the character (mainly the Claudette skin) is unfortunate.

It is never shown to be the case for Claudette, even the rift lore reinforces this.
It is not black and white judgement on my part. It is literally what the game tells us. I think it is a disservice to the character to make something that does not fit with their personality.

I still think some cosmetic sets make no sense and shouldn't be in the game. But they are already here. I can't complain about them because they are here already. I can point out their inaccuracies/flaws, but I will never ask for content to be removed once it is here.
Again, I praise the skill and effort of the artist, just am critiquing the judges. They won. Glad they get recognized by the devs. I just think there were better, more true-to-the-character options. There were amazing survivor and killer ideas but this just goes against the intent of the characters.

I liked that one a lot. It fits better and I would want my Yui to wear that. Too bad it wont have another chance until next time.

She is characteristically shy, and a shut in. She would never dream of wearing that. The auric cells that make up the outfit would never form that because she herself would never wish for it.

Ok, my proposal, since many people have a problem with a thong - make a thong-cosmetic for every Character. I would suggest this one for the males:
Or at least for Clown.
See? Then Claudettes Thong will not be a problem anymore if everyone is wearing thongs!
(I highly doubt the thong will make it into the game, if anyone ever looked under skirts, there is exactly nothing... Or a really big panty, whatever you wanna call it... Not that I ever looked under the skirt of any character, of course!)

Another way they could go about it is for the devs to pick a bunch of them that they like and then pass it to the community to vote on their favourites. I imagine that'd create less complaints.

If they wanted so bad a spring/summer related cosmetic, they could have picked that awesome Yui cosmetic or the awesome pool party Jeff design who competed.
I'm pretty against community polls though, a wide enough community could get the choice on every winner.

Add it to the lore first, then add the skin. Simple.
I don't think she would ever want to either. Same with her summer dress in the rift. It is not her style.

You are right. That is why I want the criteria for selection to change slightly toward keeping them consistent with their characters. That way the devs will be forced to choose better ideas instead of just the ones that look the best.

Same, Claudette is someone with tasteful cosmetics. I have A LOT of them since before Meg, she was my main.
It just doesn't fit, and I can't get over it.

Then put the fun cosmetics with the fun characters. Seriously, Nea, Feng, Ace, and David King exist. Why not put the more upbeat ones with them?
Then again, this is a horror game. Fun cosmetics really do not fit regardless.
I don't like that one either. But I wouldn't ask it to be removed since they added it to the game. But this is in context to the contest, which is more controllable from our end. There were those who had better ideas that got passed up because they are not artistic enough for the devs.

(TBH I feel like the popularity of the survivor kinda helps with their final decision), I mean the last winner was Feng, now Claudette I woudn't be surprised if the next one is Meg or Kate since they're the most popular female survivors after those two.
They saw a decent design of Claudette, (which is unfortunally not Frogdette) and they told them they might aswell.

That's what I was thinking too. Also, who looks at that hoodie and goes "I bet she got that at a cultural festival?" I just figured she got it at a con or something. I can see her wearing it when she plays casually.

For me I like the idea of the cosmetic contest being this place where you can create random skins that the dev team wouldn't think of themselves.
I knew the Legion was going to win and I thought Pyjama Feng was going to win as survivor tbh. This is the problem with only having one winner from each section. If you don't like the winner then the contest wasn't worth your investment in the end.
I'm happy for the two winners but I think there were other characters who needed skins more than those two.

It's not even a matter of wording for me. I just don't think the connection there that you propose makes sense. If it doesn't make sense for Claudette to be wearing more revealing clothing due to the description of her character, why would it make sense for Feng to go to a festival similar to the one you describe or wear garb similar to the one you describe based on the description of her character?

Eh, I mildly disagree. I think the official skins should remain true to the character, but I feel like as far as community-designed skins go, anything should be allowed.
I'm all for more immersion and staying true to the actual characters, but it's okay to have some silly stuff from time to time, and I feel like community-designed cosmetic contests are the time to do it.

It's a nice design and it won because people liked it.
If people wanted a nerdy looking claudette, that would have won. it didn't. people wont want it. nothing more needs to be said.
