What do you think are the most important things that a new player would need to know about playing survivor?

Just need a few ideas of very important things that I might miss.

Learning to loop sooner rather than later is important. Looping is the act of running around structures several times to create distance and waste time. This game is all about time management and the more you waste, the better it is. Creators like The JRM (youtube), Usyllis (youtube), and Ardetha (when he plays survivor- youtube).

Don't be afraid all the time- it's okay to be scared when the killer's near you, and go into hiding, but don't be terrified when they're on the other side of the map hooking your buddy.

Skillchecks- the sooner you learn to hit them the better, tbh. Not much there except practice- perks like Decisive Strike (unlocked from Laurie Strode at level 40) help you hit difficult skillchecks more easily (since they give you skillchecks).

Rushed actions- Holding sprint (on PC it's shift by default and controller I think it's left trigger but I might be wrong, I've rebount most of my switch controls lmao) whilst jumping into a locker ot vaulting a window makes it a 'rushed action'. These are faster than normal but also show the killer your location, so only use it when you're in chase.

Mindgames- like a lot of other games, if you can get inside your opponents head in a chase you're gonna excell. This is definitely a more advanced skill, so don't worry about it, but one guy who's pretty good at them is TrU3ta1ent (youtube), some of his survivor gameplay is pretty educational. I'd give him a watch if you could too.

Gameplay guides- now I don't promise any level of quality, but right now there's a competiton going on to design a guide for beginners to the game. It can be found on the forums here, and if you have some time where you're not in a youtube mood, reading through some of these could be useful.

Finally, play killer- I know, counter intuitive. You wanna learn to play survivor so you play killer? It's a surprise but it does work a lot of the time- you start to read what the survivors are going to do, and then you start applying it to your own gameplay as survivor. It works like a charm.

Good luck mate, and I'll see you out there in the fog.

Also, welcome to survivor (unless this isn't for you, in which case oops).

    To play both sides

Good stuff from Doddle. I would say, in general, just always be doing something. Gens, totems, chests, healing others. Stay busy. It'll help you pip, and may aid in your team escaping.

Also, try to loop for as long as possible. Even if you get butchered in the end, seeing those gens pop around you is endorphin city.

Dying is OK. You don't have to escaoe every game to be a good survivor.

Play both sides, so you get into the mindset of both.

Avoid bright clothing until you can loop effectively. I'm not saying to become a Blendette, but just don't take an obvious piece of clothing if you can't hold the killer off for a good while.

As for characters to learn/level up first, I'd say Dwight, Claudette or David King since they're all base game (Lullaby for the Dark is a free DLC) and all their perks have some use.

Dwight - Bond is good to find other people for healing or tracking who's getting chased. Prove Thyself is also fantastic for getting some extra BP and working on generators quickly which is kinda needed in lower ranks.

Claudette - All her perks are related to healing. Only perk that can easily and consistently heal yourself too.

David King - Dead Hard is a good exhaustion perk, but I prefer Lithe. We're Gonna Live Forever is also fantastic for getting extra early XP.

Spend time playing killer to understand what other survivors do in chase, and understand how killers powers and cooldown's work.

Only applies to PC gamers unfortunately, but if you find yourself lagging a lot or having a low frame rate, I'd look into some guides floating around to boost that. It helps considerably.

Figuring out what to do and where a killer is can help a lot in early game, or even late game. Skills like Kindred, Bond, & Aftercare are great for aura reading, or Spine Chill to know if a killer is coming towards you.

If you know someone is in a chase, do a gen. The amount of games I've seen lost because people are running about like chickens while the killer is occupied is staggering, lol. Totems are also good. Inner Strength allows you to heal after breaking a totem & entering a locker (personally the best heal imo), and breaking totems help combat a killer skill called "No One Escapes Death", which you will see a lot, especially in early ranks. Just always try to be doing something productive.

    Good luck!

I would recommend using both Kindred and Dead Sense until you get comfortable enough to drop them. Seeing the killer's aura will not only make you live longer, but will also let you concentrate on both learning proper map traversal and completing trial objectives .

It helps eliminate bias and you learn how to play survivor whilst playing killer. Not necessary but a very good idea to help new players learn faster.

Are you seriously suggesting jrm if you want to learn looping?

I love his videos but he memes wayyy too much instead of looping optimally

I'd suggest ayrun instead if your trying to learn looping

Yeah, I don't know why but I've actually learned more from JRM than Ayrun lmao. It's really odd.

Yeah, op, Ayrun's also a really good survivor like nancymain said here, give him a shot too if you want
