Adiris is not the real killer

She is simply a vessel for the real killer, the Plague. Adiris herself is not the killer, otherwise she would be titled 'the Priestess' or 'the Devotee'. Really, she doesn't even have a weapon, it's just a censer dangling by a chain. It's the Plague that she's host to that weakens and incapacitates the survivors to the point where Adiris can seize them and offer them to the Entity as a sacrifice. That's why she was taken by the Entity. She had both requirements for a good killer: Manipulable to be loyal in her religiosity and potential to kill in her disease. The Entity is only using her to be the arms and legs of the real killer.

That's an interesting theory, because if that were the case then The Entity is interested in killers even at a cellular level. It does make a lot of sense since Adiris was a good and much-loved individual, whilst the plague was killing indiscriminantly.

I like this theory as an explanation for the somewhat unusual choice for The Entity!

I was recently explaining my boyfriend the story behind the Plague, and thought about how it was always so odd to me that a faithful, kind soul would become a fierce killer. This post made a lot of sense to me. Wow!

She's a killer who can't stop killing even without trying. She killed all her followers leaving her broken but not ready for death. At least not for her.

The Plague is Adiris because that's what she became unknowingly. Like many others have said on here before, Adiris spread the plague unknowingly and caused it to kill many, many, MANY more people than it should have because she covered up her own symptoms. She caused the illness to permeate into where everyone basically gathered: the temples of worship. By the end of her life on her version of Earth, she saw the Entity call to her, mistook it for her god, and decided to follow its orders in ridding the world of heretics and those that are impure. She's obviously lumped into "once good, but misguided into doing evil" category but she's far from innocent in terms of how many died due to believing in her. I love that they called her the Plague because it really drives home the point that she's become so much worse than what she was. She's no longer a priestess with love and good intentions in mind; she's a festering, lethal illness that spreads it to all she comes into contact with regardless of her wishes.
