A Sensitive Topic
I know there are a lot of opinions, but there's one thing I've found more toxic than ever lately. I keep running into a player who mains Leatherface and camps/tunnels any player who is a person of color (Adam, Tapp, Claudette). He wears the Claudette face, which is basically "blackface." Initially, I didn't really notice until I was playing with a friend who mains Adam- a character he thinks he will look a lot like one day. Well, this happened to him. When I tried to unhook (unwisely) we both went down, but LF hooked him again and dribbled me to get me back up.
After the game, the dude sent some weirdly hateful messages that aren't technically against the ToS, including a confederate flag and "your life didn't matter." My friend was really affected by this. I initially wasn't, but after some discussion, I'm really surprised.
I get that Leatherface wears people's faces. I get it's inclusive for Claudette to have a face as well. I get this guy is human trash and should be reported. That said, he's not breaking the rules. He's just wearing a cosmetic and sending some vaguely coded messages.
So I guess I wonder... How is this in the game in 2020? (Well, aside from that 2020 is a dumpster fire).

Totally get that. But there are people who abuse that, like so many things.
0 -
This. There are going to be racist players in every game. But it would be more racist to exclude her just because she was black.
19 -
Again, I recognize and agree with that.
But then wearing that, targeting PoC and sending them Confederate flags is just... ugh. And not against ToS on PS4.
1 -
Because people either buy into the "reporting does nothing" meme or help spread it despite knowing it's 100% false.
6 -
Then the problem are toxic players and not bubba's cosmetics. I mean you wouldn't be angry at the producer of a black shirt because the person wearing it is racist do you?
11 -
Is there really?? i have honestly never seen the blackface Leatherface this whole time i have been playing dbd...
and well these players who wear it and then send toxic messages to the players playing as the black characters well these are the pieces of human excrement that are all "Im a bad ass" when they can hide behind a screen but then not have the testicular fortitude to say it face to face.
and there is no way to stop it from happening unfortunately
3 -
I'd be curious what the most commonly used "face" is. And to go further, if it's Claudette because people are racist, Claudette because people hate Blendette, or some other reason.
3 -
Well, YMMV, but there's one guy on PS4 who loves to send those hate messages. Like all of my friends know his name and he's not the worst killer, just he loves to send weird crap to the people playing black characters.
But there's been a lot more lately. About 1/3 of the Bubba's I see wear it. It just strikes me as a... weird choice.
1 -
Let me approach this one other way:
If there was a 2021 version of Texas Chainsaw Massacare made, and Bubba wore blackface... how do you think this would go over? I'm not trying to endorse "cancel culture" but this seems like an unfortunate choice.

How is Bubba racist? He wears people's faces, he's not concerned with the color of skin. Don't fault Bubba for the actions of players.

The skin isn't the problem, we should be condemning the players.
8 -
It goes both ways. If you remove it but keep the other three original Survivor faces, there would be questions regarding why Claudette, the only member of the original 4 that happens to be black, is not included. The only way I could see this at all happening is remove Jake's face as well and just leave Dwight and Meg.
Not everything that COULD be used for racist purposes is DESIGNED for racist purposes.

I don't think Bubba is racist or would ever wear the face.
Like I get what DBD was going for in creating the faces, but it hasn't turned out the way it was intended, I think.
1 -
I can see where you are coming from but I think it also important to look at intent.
The skin itself doesn't promote any negative ideology about Claudette's ethnicity. To me at least, it's in a more plain matter of fact way. Leather face wears the faces of other people. And the name and tag are just references to Claudette as a person, as well as her personal perk.
Smartface
"He's not completely devoid of empathy."
I don't doubt that there will be some people that may have racist names/or chat while having the Claudette face skin, but I'd argue that says more about the person than the cosmetic.
4 -
I know right? Like it's obvious that the issue is the player here. Had they used any white killer and sent racist messages either way would you fault the skin they used. What if they used a black killer and did the same thing?
I personally prefer the claudette mask over the others because I like it and it's the most distinguished one out of the rest.
This reminds me of some loser that I played against, they only targeted the black survivors and let the rest go. I'm sure I don't need to explain what that killer said at the end.
3 -
imagine the community outcry had they excluded claudette for the single reason of being black.
people like the ones you just described can and should be reported, but the mask itself shouldnt be removed imo
6 -
I'm like 90% certain Bubba is either unaware of race or doesn't give a #########. All he cares about is appeasing his "family". To Bubba, all of the survivors are the same: meat to be put down
5 -
players are the issue, not the cosmetic. sucks that people are racist but you can't do much other than ban them.
1 -
mate i love you but you're wrong here.
bubba wears people's faces. he doesn't care about the colour of their skin.
what's more racist? including claudette's face despite the fact she's back or excluding her face because she's black?
to me it's the second option, without a doubt.
@Azgard12 op, just report the players. sony is known for being VERY harsh with it's rules and this seems pretty racially targeted. however this isn't racism. you asked why people would wear it- a friend of mine would use the prestiege 1 and 2 cosmetics but use the claudette face because it's darker and subsequently he hides better than p3 or any other face. it's why a lot of people play claudette in the first place- because she's black she hides better. that seems kinda more racist than just a killer getting a cosmetic based upon wearing another's face, yet nobody has an issue with that.
3 -
I get that. I guess my intent here is to try to discuss it. I'm not trying to say "let's destroy this" or whatever else. I'm saying that the existence in the game is maybe worth noting. And the fact that people are abusing it worries me further. Ultimately though, I wonder if... 1) wearing this face 2) intentionally focusing on any PoC in the trial and 3) sending these confederate flags or "that life didn't matter" to those you kill is bannable.

You think they will magically stop being racist because you cancel culture a Claudette mask? He/She won’t. The mask didn’t prompt this, nor is it insulting to anyone with half a brain.
You just want victimhood points~
7 -
I don't think Bubba's masks should be based off of skin. They should pick something else, like hair, because of course excluding her face or whitewashing it would be racist.
0 -
there's actually a difference.
blackface is generally used to portray mocking, demeaning stereotypes of poc. bubba wearing a black person's face isn't meant to portray a demeaning stereotype, it's literally him wearing a face. if people get offended over that then they don't know what actual blackface is.
this cosmetic isn't support segregation. it isn't supporting the jim crow laws or stating black people are lesser than white people. it's just a black person's face being used as a mask, which is his entire gimmick.
1 -
#########? What do you bring racism here? Gtf out of here OP
1 -
Hey man, you know Bubba is called Leatherface for a reason, right? Not Leatherhair or Leatherfeet, Leatherface. Why would Leatherface have a gimmick of wearing hair? in the remake of ATCM you literally see him sewing someone's face into a mask for himself (idk about any of the others, i havent even seen the remake fully since i hate horror lol).
3 -
True, you're right, I was wrong in my original comment, since he isn't mocking people or making black people look bad, deleting my comments.
2 -
I demand a spoof of the TCM movie called Leatherfeet...
2 -
takes a lot to admit to a mistake man :)
1 -
why would you curse me with such an imagine.
if they ever revive Scary Movie this should be the killer lol
2 -
I hate this day and age where everybody is super sensitive over everything. . .
6 -
Hot take: blackface is not racist itself; it is how you do it and the context for how it’s done that can be racist
bubba is not racist
1 -
Hey I said it was a "sensitive" question.
1 -
Lets face it, Leatherfeet would definitely be a porno. Kinda like if "The Bootie Gorgon" was a movie.
1 -
Blackface's only purpose is to LITERALLY make fun of African American's but ok.
1 -
He didn't bring racism here, hes condemning people who are racist.
2 -
So, it's not racist to wear the skin of other ethnicity, but omg, how dare one of those be black? What if black was excluded? Would people get butthurt over that? 'Muh representation!'
4 -
No, there are people who cosplay black people and do a very good job, is it racist then? No, it’s not.
1 -
I wish Bubba got more unlockable faces. It was like stamp collecting. We should get one for every OC survivor. Ace could be LuckyFace with his sunglasses.
1 -
David King- FighterFace
Ace Visconti- LuckyFace
Nea Karlsson- GraffitiFace
Feng Min- GamingFace
Kate Denson- SongFace
Adam Francis- TeacherFace
Jeffrey Johansen- ArtistFace
Jane Romero- ReporterFace
Yui Kimura- BikerFace
Zarina Kassir- DocumentorFace

Listen, again, I'm interested in having discourse on this topic. I'm not trying to say we should take away cosmetics or that Bubba is racist. I'm saying that if you described the entire thing to someone outside of our horror community, they'd likely think it's archaic. weird, and racist. Today was the first day I ever thought twice about it. I play with a friend who mains Adam because he likes that they share a resemblance. After getting camped and killing a random Claudette, the killer let me (Kate) and a random Laurie go. He sent my Adam friend a message with a confederate flag and something along the lines of "your life didn't matter" which I am guessing is a remark meant to be a pun on BLM.
All of this to say, it was just disheartening. That someone would go to such lengths to express racism through a game. My friend is more bothered than I was, so I'm trying to be supportive. I honestly don't know what to say. Thanks to those of you who have offered some constructive words I can pass along next time.
I really would have never thought that we'd be dealing with stuff like this in the 20th century, but we are.
2 -
I am sure that there are people who do this (and that is frankly unacceptable), however, they are an incredibly tiny portion of the community. I, in my 1K+ hours, have never actually seen a Claudette-face Bubba, nor have I encountered a racist player.
1 -
Reporting is the best (arguably only) way to deal with these people. Send them a clear message: they are not welcome here.
3 -
- bubba, a cannibal who eats people, wearing a black persons face is not racist, people misusing it to be racist are the racists.
- a person doing blackface in a respectful/contextually appropriate manner is not racist
- someone doing blackface to make fun of black people is racist
thats all that matters, you can describe it as simple as that to anyone and they would understand, hopefully
1 -
I dont get it. Why is it a problem when Bubba wears Claudettes face but not Megs or Dwights face?
0 -
I appreciate these guidelines. It helps to have the opinion of a person of color when speaking to my friend.
0 -
Ikr, but how is using a black mask racist? We don't need this stupid sjw debate
0 -
If that's your take, clearly we do. I mean, you have the choice to just ignore the thread.
2 -
Thats the debate, you have one side, they have the other. You could not participate in the debate if you don't want to have it.
1 -
Idiots always use one confederate flag. It was a battle flag. Look up how many battles flags the confederates used. How this one flag came to be used for racist means I don’t know and it doesn’t matter. What does matter is that ppl use it for racist means so that makes it racist. Of all those other confederate battle flags, most most ppl would not recognize so they wouldn’t associate it with racism.
just report the issue and the person. If you think you’re going to change a racists persons feeling you’re probably wrong. Ppl believe what they want whether it’s good or bad. If you let one idiot bother you then they will all bother you. If you let that person bother you then you’re giving power to someone who doesn’t need it.

idk if you mean but im just a white dude who understands how context matters
these aren't really "guidelines" as more so common sense, calling something, in this case blackface, racist, without even considering the reasoning for it being done is ignorant at best
