We need more black and POC survivors
So we have a ton of white characters because, obviously. But for POC characters we have Jane, Zarina, and Ace maybe. Three... we only have three POC characters. The same is with black characters... the three black characters are, claud, Tapp and Adam. Which is even worse because we only have ONE black woman which is the most hated group of people for some reason even though they’re the prettiest on the planet. And the Tapp is a licensed character so they didn’t even take the time to design the character and choose the race so practically there’s only two. And then theirs two Asians. Come on bhvr gives us more POC! And if you have a new chapter idea and survivor who is white just change them to black. It costs no effort whatsoever

I agree with this and would also like to add that I would love to get more Latin American characters, too... There are Latin American POC so they could create a character like that :D

I´m glad you didn´t word this in a hateful, rage fueled Karen way. I agree there´s definately room for more, but in my opinion they did a pretty good job so far diversity-wise.
13 -
The current cast is already very diverse. Adding diversity for the sake of diversity is just god awful.
75 -
Now ask the question. Are they representative in terms of percentages of the population?
Also i guess asians don't count?
19 -
I really want a cool and almost punk-rock black female. Basically the polar opposite of Claudette. Fox was one of my favourite characters to play as in the FT13 game as she was so badass. I’d love to get a similar character.
I feel like whenever we get that type of character it’s always somebody who’s white (Nea, Jeff) so let’s shake things up.
3 -
Claudette, Adam, tapping, zarina, Jane, yui, min and jake.. There is plenty of representation. Sure maybe we need a native american survivor, possible with a skin Walker being the killer.
6 -
So, you are asking for more diversity when there is probably more diversity in this game than most? What if they don't become more diverse the way you want them to be?
7 -
Great another one of these posts. Like @Zaitsev already stated, adding diversity to just check boxes is wrong.
41 -
Wait, has anyone even looked up population ratios? This game is pretty on par here.
18 characters with 8 people of color. Considering whites make up around 70%.
I'm honestly not concerned with the race of the character, just want goo lore and perks.
Asian
Jake, Yui, Feng
Black
Tapp, Claudette, Adam
Hispanic
Jane
Arabic
Zarin
White
Dwight, Meg, Nea, Bill, Quentin, David, Jeff, Nancy, Ash, Ace, Lori
Killers may be less diverse. Off the top of my head, there are only the following: Doc, Wraith, Spirit, Oni, one of Legion, Plague....perhaps, she could be anything. Oh, and demogorgan......he's one of a kind.
12 -
I think bhvr is actually okay on this front. The cast is about 30% non-white. A little more if you pull out the licensed survs.
Plus a fair few of the killers are non-white. Wraith, Hag, Doc, Spirit, Oni, Plague, Joey (but he's just a skin really). It looks like they've been very mindful of making things more representative than the norm.
Let's fix other stuff first, lol.
16 -
I believe Plague/Adiris would be either something along the lines of Greek or Middle Eastern given the fact that shes from (or around) Babylon.
3 -
Plague could possibly be persian depending on the time of her back story.
5 -
Here is the breakdown:
There are 22 survivors:
Dwight - white guy
Meg - white girl
Claudette - black girl
Jake - asian guy
Nea - white girl (Swedish)
Laurie - white girl
Ace - latino guy (Argentinian/Italian)
Bill - white guy
Feng - asian girl (Chinese)
David - white guy
Qeuntin - white guy
Tap - black guy
Kate - white girl
Adam - black guy (Jamaican)
Jeff - white guy (Norwegian)
Jane - latina girl
Ash - white guy
Nancy - white girl
Steve - white girl
Yui - asian girl (Japanese)
Zarina - middle easern girl (Lebanese)
Cheryl - white girl
That makes
13 white survivors
3 black survivors
3 asian survivors
2 latino survivors
1 middle eastern survivor
That means
~59% white
~14% black
~14% asian
~9% latino
~5% middle eastern
In terms of gender, you have
10 men
12 women
That means:
~45% men
~55% women
Seems pretty representative of the population of the United States. I know BHVR is based in Canada though, so maybe these better match Canada's demographics? I'm not Canadian so i won't comment on that, but looking at the U.S I'd argue maybe asians are a little more over-represented and latinos are under-represented. But given that each asian is also of a different nationality/country of origin, it seems pretty good.
In terms of other breakdowns we don't know sexual orientation of most (any?) of the survivors so it is hard to say there. We also don't know whether any are transgender.
But i'll agree, we need another latino soon, also probably a native american. But this isn't some serious problem where it's all just white guys like you are making it out to be i think.

There is more diversity than OP realizes:
7 black characters - Claudette, Tapp, Adam, Doctor, Wraith, Hag, and Joey (from Legion)
4 POC: Zarina, Ace, Jane, and Plague (she's middle eastern/Babylonian which is in Iraq in modern times)
5 Asian: Yui, Feng, Jake, Oni and Spirit.
Totaling to 16 Black or POC which leaves 26 Caucasians. With 42 characters total, that means there's only 10 more Caucasians than there are Black or POC, which we can drop by 12 (Laurie, Shape, Quentin, Freddy, Pig, Tapp, Ash, Ghostface, Nancy, Steve, Cheryl, Bubba) if we remove all of the Licensed survivors and Killers (what can I say, Directors love killing white people, and making them out to be serial killers more than they do Black and POC's) which puts the count at 15 Black and POC, and 14 Caucasians (not counting Demogorgon as Caucasian since he's not human). While having more Black or POC characters is still a good idea, the count is higher than OP initially claimed.

Agreed

Can we at least agree that they could ad a native american survivor? Possibly with a skin Walker as the accompanying killer?
3 -
I did a bit of research, says shes babylonian.
Babylonia was a state in ancient Mesopotamia. The city of Babylon, whose ruins are located in present-day Iraq, was founded more than 4,000 years ago as a small port town on the Euphrates River.
So shes middle eastern, Arabic I guess.
2 -
Ahhh yes, we need this, definitely more than bug fixing and balancing. I don’t care if I take a hit from 10m away as long as there’s more POC in the game.
As a “person of color” myself I’m asking you please not to go there and let the devs focus on the issues that are more pressing, like game health...maybe? I don’t want the game I love to get cancelled :’(
24 -
I love how OP says "we only have ONE black woman which is the most hated group of people for some reason even though they’re the prettiest on the planet".
The reason she's often hated isn't because of the way she looks, it's because lots of people use her to blend in with the dark environment like a chameleon, and killers are tired of playing where's waldo with her.
18 -
jake is korean
4 -
I could be wrong; I don't want to speak for the OP. The way I read that line is they are saying black women in real life are the most hated group. If I am right, I didn't even want to address such an absurd claim
3 -
I'm fine with them adding more variety to the cast, since all survivors are the same anyway. But there's something just really ######### creepy and... bizarre about pulling real-world population breakdowns into a game where an entity can summon you to another realm. "You have your allotted percentage, begone." The #########, guys?
2 -
Ahh makes since. I know Babylon fell to persia, which is why I thought such. Thanks.

No problem🤗

Representation for the sake of representation is bad representation.
24 -
I feel like this isn't as big a problem as you think. Around 60% of the characters are white, which is pretty representative of the population of places like the US. I feel like so long as the character is cool lore wise and has decent perks, they're good. I wouldn't mind some more POC characters though, so long as we're not just trying to check boxes, cause thats scummy.
5 -
I do agree that diversity is good, theres a lot just in my family even, so its nice to see it in games. however, i'm not so keen on the idea of "if they're white, just make them black." You can't whitewash black characters, and you shouldn't change race just for the sake of diversity. I'd rather have well thought out lore, and better gaming than having piles and piles of characters that are there simply to satisfy diversity. I can guarantee you that if it did get done, it wouldn't get done well.
2 -
I mean, sure. But I wouldn't call it a huge priority. At least nowhere near as dire as OP says.
Just somethin else to put on the wishlist after QOL changes n junk.

Omg, how have I never thought of a skin walker as a killer?! Hell, a wendigo would also work!
I agree they need a native American survivor, though. Wonder what perks they'd come with...

At least you can throw them on the hook for the time being. :D

Making character a certain race, gender, sexuality, etc just to be diverse leads to bland characters that are usually stereotypes
Post edited by oh_0k on5 -
While I wouldn't mind more representation, I feel this, too. Don't want to pressure the devs into making a stereotype. Kinda defeats the purpose of representation.
1 -
We dont NEED anything. People always take issue with what they don't have. Yeah it'll be nice to have diversity but they already do. Its not like its racist or they hate them or whatever. Like ok licensed characters, why arent they black? BECAUSE THEY ARE LICENSED AND ALREADY HAVE A SKIN COLOR. so thats half your argument out the picture. Original characters are Dwight who is white and jake/Korean meg/white nea/European technically and Claudette/black Ace/Italian(his skin color is white yet you mentioned him and not nea who is white skinned but not Caucasian so at least be consistent) Feng/I believe Chinese Yui/Japanese Jane/Mexican zarina/I'm assuming Arabian Jeff/white Adam/black David/white(technically European as well since Britain is in Europe.) I believe that is all the no licensed characters and my point is that is already diversed with multiple different ethnicities and this game is made by canadians who yeah the skin is white but im sure they are French. Anyways you not only critiqued the license as being devoid of diversity you refused to realize that to get the rights to something as a portrayal does NOT give you a right to portray them as something they aren't. Either way I think diversity is great but at least be logical with your statement
1 -
I'd prefer they just make interesting characters instead of just checking boxes on a list. Or maybe the could focus on the important stuff like fixing the game. That seems a bit more pressing.
Plus, BHVR has already (and continues to) diversify the cast, so... it just seems like a weird request.
8 -
You made a slight mistake
You said steve is a white girl
2 -
Wow...just wow.
0 -
Those aren't all racial classifications, at least not in the United States. Jane and Zarina would both be considered White.
0 -
No he got that right. ;)
2 -
Wouldn't t mind a perk to boost or protect totems, and possibly one to track the killer.
1 -
So let the rest of the world conform to US standards? Is that what you’re implying?
6 -
And as Exhibit A, I give you Overwatch, which did precisely that purely for the sake of being diverse (which was a huge marketing thing with them in 2016 and while Michael Chu was still their writer before leaving Blizzard earlier this year).
0 -
No, but name a country that doesn't use the same classifications? I can confirm that the European Union, Canada, and the United States classify Middle Easterners and certain Latin Americans as White. Jane may be ethnically and culturally Hispanic but she is racially White. Hispanic isn't a race.
1 -
As for the topic though, they could make all sorts of racial characters, but the options a lot of people turn a blind eye to nowadays would not make you happier. Be happy with what you have, OP.

Lol. Oops. Bad copy paste. Makes it even more balanced though.

I don't quite understand what's wrong with asking for more representation? Hell, even the fear that they'll create stereotypes is just... Wrong? They succesfully created the 40 already existing characters in the game without any stereotypes, neither did I see any posts before saying they were scared that BHVR was running out of ideas and would start using stereotypes more often?
Even lore-wise it doesn't make sense either. Like, does the entity just not want to see POC suffer as much as white people?
3 -
Should bhvr not bugfix the tons of bugs that plague dbd, before they looking at those "minor" things?
Maybe it is because I am a killer main, but I consider a bugfree gameplay, buffing certain killers and certain survivor perks as more important as that.
At the end, every survivor ends anyways on a hook and turns grey if he hangs there too long :P.
Edit: Btw. they having stereo types already in their game. Like Meg, David, Nea, Ace and Dwight and it is not bad to have them. DBD is no real life simulation.
