Does anyone else play an extremely defensive hag?

Nearic Member Posts: 26

I find that in most cases, I usually never leave one half of the map. I lock down 3 to 5 generators close enough for me to manage, and almost completely ignore anywhere else. This is usually pretty effective, but I find I drop chase a lot when the survivor heads to the other side of the map. I kind of hate this play style. I don't find it particularly fun and I don't imagine most survivors do either.

That being said, if I leave my "domain" too often, or really at all, my 4 or 3 gen gets screwed up and I can no longer effectively use my power. When this happens I usually end up getting bodied by any mildly competent survivors.

I guess what I want to know is, are there any hag experts with any tips for being a more aggressive but still effective hag.

In case anyone wants to know, my usual setup is:

No addons

Sloppy Butcher

Thanataphobia

Hex: Ruin

Monitor and Abuse

Defensive is how you play her, you don't want to be aggressive. You never commit to chases outside your web.

As you mentioned you're generally gonna pick your best 3 gen as soon as the match starts and essentially never leave it. You just camp those 3 gens and whatever unfortunately soul gets hooked inside the web as an unlucky casualty of being near the gens. That's just how she plays which is why a lot of people don't like going against her.

Thanata is a trap perk. It does very little.

Sloppy and Monitor are great. Ruin if you like it, but I think it's too much of a gamble of it's found and whether or not it happens to be in the 3 gen you want. I personally think Surge is way better because you're more likely to hit multiple gens with it because you picked your 3 gen as the closest gens and it saves you kick time which is more substantial on a slower killer like hag.

I personally have a soft spot for Surveillance on her for locking down your 3 gen and it synergizes well with Surge.

MYC is also an extremely strong choice.

See hag is like trapper but less aggressive until you get the webs. First she is 4.4 so dont loop. MAB is great on her because it makes her like deathslinger so you can get free hits but pressure people close to your web and start chases that way you have a chance of getting downs. But you can also teleport to your traps once they are set off because if your web is good you will absolutely win that chase and shouldnt risk the one you are in. But that depends in certain things I guess.

I actually don't care much about trap area. I place them everywhere but not really far from each other. My web is pretty random. Most important condition is keep all traps set. Second important condition is don't commit to long chases because Hag is slow. And if you follow both of this conditions, it makes surviving really hard.

    Thanks for the advice!

I guess it's atleast a little reassuring to know im playing hag right. I wouldn't ever accuse myself of playing the game "well" but it seems after 20ish hours on hag i have the gist of it. Im currently running with limited killer perks but i might pickup demo and pig soon for the surge&surveillance combo. I've heard about MYC a lot and I like it but I think i would only run it with trap duration addons or a mint rag.

I like thana but I guess I can see where you're coming from. I used it to encourage survivors to heal and not do gens but also penalize them in tandem with sloppy for doing so. But if they just run to the other side of the map, yeah they're not getting gens done but im also not getting hits on them. So it makes sense. I guess I'll swap it for something mediocre on hag temporarily. Maybe whispers/knockout/third seal or something. Until I get some more options.

I think thats the only way to play her, Aggressive Hags just don't exist.

I'm not a hag main, but i can give you some tips to become aggressive.

First, use STBFL. Shorter cooldown means shorter time between each teleport. It's very good on hag.

Second, don't just trap around gens. Trap loops. Trap the pathway between tiles where survivors will mostly run. Personally i never trap gens.

Third, no need to find the best 3 gens to defend. Spread out your traps, and you'll profit.

And a general tip, don't place your trap at pallet. Place it around the loop. Most of the time they won't expect it. (Almost every time)

With these i think you can down survivors very fast. I did this on ormond where they got flashlights. They almost never have the chance to disarm my trap because my traps are so random. It ended in 4k, but 4 gens did get done.

While slowdown perks are good, i don't use them as i don't really "defend" gens.

I wasn’t going to comment because I’m not great at being aggressive with her and figured someone else would.

So, the main way people play her is territorially. However, Michi plays pretty aggressive. You can watch his videos.

I switch between territorially and aggressively if I have a really good reason to. For instance, two people are left and they haven’t been triggering my web.

If you haven’t already learned it, you should identify times you don’t want to teleport. Instead, look at where your phantasm is watching and move to cut the person off.

To play aggressively you’ll be dismantling your old web and wandering around the map, placing traps in paths as normal. However, you want them to be very surprising.

A few of them should still be in tiles but most of them should be in the paths outside of tiles so you can track down the survivors by decreasing the chance of them crouching through.

I only do this when I already have a 2k because doing it before that is incredibly difficult.

If you can get really good at it you’ll be unpredictable and a threat to teams that are actually good at dealing with her because they will have a much harder time figuring out your webs.

Cool, I'll check this Michi fellow out. I try to keep my traps semi equal between tiles and pathways. Pathway to start chase, tile to end it. Hopefully michi has some new tricks I can pick up.

I play aggressive Hag because I find defensive boring to play.

Depending on the map I trap main routes Survivors take and the main building and save a few traps for chases.

In a chase I lay them at pallet loops and in the middle of jungle gyms to shut them down. 8/10 times they'll continue the loop and I'll get the hit and often they'll forget I trapped in the chase and double back to the gym or pallet I previously trapped.

    For perks I run:

    BBQ

    Third Seal

    Unrelenting

    Monitor

And Add-ons I usually use setting speed+distance but occasionally use aura reading traps+setting speed.

Give space coconut a watch on YouTube also pop by his streams in sure he would be more than happy to talk over any questions you may have.

    @SpaceCoconut

Hag is a defensive killer I enjoy getting three gens and laughing evily as they try to do anything with out me knowing about it and killing them off for it.

Good luck with Hag she's very strong but will require alot of time spent learning her strengths and weaknesses.

Love how every word unde the sun is being used instead of the word camp.

    Defensive = campy

    Territorial = campy

Just say you camp with her and be done with it.

Experience is the best way to learn the do's and don'ts of any killer

I don't main Hag (cause I play Pig soooo much better)

But try everything you have at least once and watch how the survivors react

Then adjust to what feels right

So you're saying that you actually expect a hag, a 110 killer , to patrol every generator on the map. Even though that makes her completely unable to use her power in any form against good survivors, or mediocre swf. I just want to make sure we're on the same page.

Especially when the whole point of this post was me asking for advice to break out of that play style. Y'all have no chill lol.

I never expect anything else from hag players. She can be used aggressively, but once she catches someone, down goes the hook trap and 2 or 3 escape paths with furious teleport button spam while waiting even while chasing someone else.

People always tell me Hag has depth and a high skill ceiling but to win the game with her it's such a 1 dimensional strategy and you don't ever have to deviate from it because almost every survivor can't do anything against it, and the ones that can means an auto-lose for the Hag: trap 1 half of the map, get a down with little effort because insta teleport to traps and fun killer, hook and place traps around hook, teleport when survivors go for save, rinse repeat. Wow, so much depth and so much skill involved.

This is literally the suboptimal way to play Hag and why people considered her on the lower side of the tier list for so long. Read some of the replies above - maybe watch Michi from EU play and try Hag yourself. People who play this way are also turned off by Nurse because her ceiling is too high for predictions and missing penalty "too long" with the nerfs - both have more to offer than people are willing to put in the work for

So how do you suggest Hag should be played if defending gens is "camping"?

  • ALostPuppy
    ALostPuppy Member Posts: 3,398

I consider her quite high on the tier list because survivors are so bad, but if this really is the suboptimal way to play her and I see it work more often than not, as well as being able to do this myself with almost no thought or previous experience playing hag then why play any other way?

  • Leonardo1ita
    Leonardo1ita Member Posts: 2,317

you gotta play 3 gens, 4 gens unless they're really close together isn't a good strat.

also change ruin or thana for Nurse's, because survivors that harass will heal near you, you can make them waste dead hard or even down them

  • thelittlemonsters
    thelittlemonsters Member Posts: 97

This just tells me you do not play Hag in red ranks regularly enough to go up against good teams.

There are plenty of bad players that will play into Hag’s traps, but there are quite a few decent to good players that will play around them and require a lot of creativity and transitioning between strategies that keeps the game very interesting and very tough.

  • ALostPuppy
    ALostPuppy Member Posts: 3,398

Really dunno what's interesting about literally not playing the game and being as uninteractive with the survivors as possible but sure. And this argument applies for every killer that isn't nurse or spirit where if they have a weak link or two it's a stomp and if they're all good you're probably never going to win because the mechanics of the killer don't matter for bad survivors, you're still going to win with almost no issues. If all 4 survivors know what to do against Hag she literally can't win. Run in, do gens, run out when hit, heal up, rinse repeat. Hag can't ever win against this and gets destroyed because if she chases she loses and if she stays around her end of the map she'll eventually lose because the gen gets done and now she can't defend the gates.

You can do this and cut off loop paths you know. she does have 10 traps at her disposal.

    Whatever you say.

If you don’t know to adjust strategies in real time it’s going to screw you up in a few matches.

I enjoy playing that way. I live for the moments when traps go off on three different survivors in quick succession and I get three hits out of it.

If you want to try something new and not just make the game about filling red bars for survivors, go for:

    1. STBFL (or Dark Devotion if you're feeling spicy)
    2. Lullaby, DH, or Third Seal
    3. Unrelenting, BBQ, or Enduring
    4. A Nurse's Calling or Deerstalker

I used to run Spies from the Shadows until the devs nerfed it to be worthless again on most maps.
