The Plague’s Dialogue Translated
I’ve listened closely and broken down The Plague’s voice line from when she is killing a Survivor by her own hands.
After doing some research on ancient Mesopotamia and Babylon, I found that the language spoken in the region during the time period was Akkadian.
I was able to decipher what she might be saying:
Addānika = listen/attention/heed
Dīna diānu = verdict/decision = word?
Assammu = vessel/goblet/jug = fountain?
Meat = hundred
Perhaphs the spelling differs from the pronunciation but I believe she is saying:
”Addānika dīna diānu assammu meat.”
Which probably translates to:
”Heed my word, drink from a hundred fountains.”

Are you sure it's Akkadian, though? The gold tablet in the temple is written in Sumerian.

Sumerian was spoken in the Sumer civilization in southern Mesopotamia. The Babylon civilization speaks Akkadian. Perhaps the tablet was created in Sumer, or perhaps Adiris speaks both languages.
Do you know if the tablet was written by her? If she speaks both languages, there’s a chance that perhaps she’s speaking in Sumerian and my translation could be incorrect.

I know where the languages were spoken, I'm just saying that the devs may not have gone for Akkadian since Sumerian is better understood than Akkadian.
I don't know who wrote it, all I know is that it's there, in Sumerian. It's a single string of five characters, the first of which means "God". I had a list of the syllables/sounds they correlate with, but I lost it and really don't have the patience to find them again. As you know, each character can correspond to more than one syllable/sound, and each syllable/sound can have more than one character, so it's a pain in the ass to translate from text.

Then that just leaves two possibilities:
- The tablet was created in Sumer and Adiris somhow got a hold of it for her temple.
- Adiris speaks both languages and created the tablet. If so, re-translation of her lines in Sumerian may be necessary.

I'm leaning more toward "everything is in Sumerian", for one reason: the chart I used to figure out which characters represent which sounds/syllables/words in Sumerian is the same chart shown in the background a recent DbD video about the making of the Plague (possibly as a hint).

That’s interesting and would make sense, but it is specifically stated that Adiris lives in Babylon, not Sumer. So why would everything be in Sumerian? Could this just be an oversight on the devs’ part?

Maori is spoken in Polynesia. Adiris is from Babylonia in Mesopotamia, which is now around modern day Iraq.

I think the reason why it is hard for you guys to translate it because in the behind the scene, it’s mention that the language is based off a real one but they made it their own.

Or one of the things you think she said... lots of languages have a lot of words that sound similar but mean different things... for example, in anime you hear “chotto” a lot, it means a little (time). It sounds the same as choto in Spanish which is slang

Followed by some ancient "dab" technique.

Here's what I came up with for the tablet translation. There's 5 symbols on it that repeat.
"an sù bè i mà" is what I came up with from this website
"an" means god or heaven but that's all I got.

@KillerRaccoon fantastic work on the translation! Do you think she could be referring to herself as the 100th vessel? Priests and priestesses were and, in some cases, are seen as living vessels for God(s) in some religions. Perhaps she was the 100th such vessel?

I believe it’s a bit more literal that that. There’s a few possibilities I can think of:
- She feels bad for killing the Survivors, so she’s giving them a hint to have a better chance of surviving next time. She’s telling them how to cure themselves of the sickness mechanic.
- Shes telling the Survivors to drink from the fountains so that the fountains become corrupt. She’s tricking the Survivors into drinking so that she can change her Vile Purge into Corrupt Purge.
- She’s making a joke. Since Survivors are able to cure themselves with one fountain, maybe she’s saying that after she’s done with them, they’ll need a hundred fountains to cure themselves.
Since she was never evil in her backstory, it would make sense that she feels bad for the Survivors. She’s only Killing for her Gods, not out of pleasure for herself.
The second option makes her seem more evil, but it also makes sense. Perhaps she cares about serving her Gods more than she cares about the Survivors. So she’s trying to trick them into helping her grow her power.
The third option seems a little bit far fetched for her character, but we still need to consider every possibility.

What about on the menu when she is selected? I don't think she even spoke until weeks later after a patch right?

I just always pictured the subtitles for her mori animation translated as:
"I'm about to end this man's whole career!"
In all seriousness though, good work on the translation attempt. Really makes me wonder if the Devs actually went that far into research for the character to actually create a phrase in a dead language. I assumed they just made up some gibberish for her to say as there'd not be many people around who could actually translate or even accurately pronounce a phrase from a language that hasn't been spoken for a few millennia. If they really did put in that much effort however, then DAMN... These devs don't mess around when it comes to accuracy.

To be fair, it's not as if they'd have to learn the language themselves. If it is an accurate translation, they probably just contacted an anthropologist or professor specializing in ancient Babylon and asked them to whip up a few phrases. It probably wouldn't be hard for someone with those skills, but those skills are hard to find. Behaviour has the resources to look up an appropriate expert and pay them for an hour or two of their time, but us common fans probably don't.

I mean, we could also just ask that the devs comment on this saying whether what Adiris is saying is legitimate and not just gibberish. That is also entieely possible.

Huh, this thread got revived? I hope the language is one that is considered viable. Most likely a dying or dead language like Latin, but obviously not Latin (For the Plague).

Seems like I'm a little late to the party! Haha! I've been doing some research on the Babylon and Sumerian and It is true that in Babylon the main language was indeed Akkadian. The population was expanding and the Akkadian were having trouble with the Sumer people. In 2340 BC Sumer was over taken by the Akkadian and the Akkadian empire was created in 2334 BC with people who spoke Akkadian and Sumerian so Adiris is very likely to have spoken both languages since the population contained both languages. The "Drafa" Plague, which I believe is the plague in the lore is, resurfaced in 2258 BC(?).The plague first started on a island called Drafa where immortal humans caught the plague and died before anyone else could come. Storms prevented anyone from coming or leaving. In just a year the disease had been spread all throughout the colonies with a 100% infection and a 100% fatal rate. Adiris could be born from 2340 BC to a little before 2258 BC.

That is not exactly possible unless your friend plays the plague. Plus it would take hours to drink from a 100 fountains in the game.
