I LOVED the new generators. Until today that is.
When the new generators were released I was super stoked! They were gorgeous, I loved all of the new survivor animations of them fiddling with wires, pulling levers, twisting pipes, and more. And I thought the new sound design was great too; keeping the same progession noises but adding new sounds for each of the different pieces a survivor could mess with while they worked. They all melded together nicely to give this rich and detailed sound when multiple survivors were working together.
Today my game updated, and with that update came new sound effects to the generators. Specifically loud, grating, engine-revving sound effects. I get the effect the devs are trying to acheive, but I honestly don't like them. They occur way too frequently, and they are loud enough that they drown out all of the other, more interesting sound effects.
If there was an issue with the gen noises before, ie. They were too quiet for killers, then make the other sounds louder, that's fine. But it feels like all of the nuanced, subtle sound effects that were added in are pointless now, because I can hardly hear them over the screeching engine revving.
Would love to hear other people's thoughts on this as well.

I was a fan of the simple gen sounds from before. The clunks atop the rumbles was fine; there was no reason to change unless you were bored and had nothing better to update in the game (and there are many other things that are better deserving of sound updates/changes because the Hillbilly's chainsaw sounds rn suck).

I like how they spark when a survivor lets go. Its a nerf to Blendettes and Urban Evasion users.
Not sure what people are talking about with new gens. As killer they seem quieter but I think its the issue with how the audio works. If the game thinks its in a seperate room due to a wall near your camera then it goes extremely quiet

Yeah, there's too much noise going on. I'm having a hard time telling the sounds apart. Especially if I have a perk that alerts on top on these terrible gen sounds. If the gen sounds have to be there I wish they were only on the killers end and not the survivors...

Well, even thought they don't mean bad, not only they are too loud making it harder to hear the TR, which that's not bad for the killer but I do believe that those new sound effects are not good for generators, it sounds like it's starting a car engine and please, I have used generators before and that's not how they sound.

Whatever the opposite of ASMR is, its the new gen sounds.

It's not that these new sounds were too loud (yes, they are) but theae sounds are just so...I don't know...irritating? It makes my skin shiver...it's like...some weird animal sounds combined wih starting a car.

I honestly think the problem is they are there through the whole repair cycle.
It would be cool if maybe mid-way through or when it's about to be finished it had that 'car starting' sound effect. Right now it seems to be on a loop.

The revving scared the ######### out of me today. I'm usually paranoid in the beginning of the match before I know who the killer is cause I'm afraid is feeding fat ass Michael and Ghostface that juicy stalk stalk, but today I heard the revving for the first time and I hopped off gen thinking I was gonna get plowed by inbredface or hillbilly, it blew up cause badly timed skill checks, amiright? And then a doctor bonked me on the head.

I liked the old sounds too, before they added any additional sounds to it. I'm ok with making the old sounds louder if needed, but I think it is totally unnecessary to add new ones, it makes the game worse and more annoying.

Our thoughts are your thoughts pretty much,
...obnoxiously noisy an unnecessary.
Cool idea, occurring too frequently in too many different revving sfx forms that drown out all the beautiful chemistry that was happening between multiple survivors repairing the same gen.
A great idea overdone.

The engine-revving is soooo bad, it doesn't even fit within the rest of the sounds. I don't understand why it was added, it adds nothing of value.
7 -
i think the car starting sound should be played when a survivor first touches the gen, but then just never play again. or at the very least, play very rarely. its so annoying.
1 -
I never even noticed them as killer once I started to play survivor I finally heard it.
It's actually not that bad I kind of like it.
2 -
give it few hours might feel differently

I don't like the new ones too, sounds like I'm trying to start a car with my key lol
3 -
I actually love the new sounds but they need to be tone down a bit tbh.
1 -
I think they're great. They sound like generators now and not... whatever they were before.
1 -
Yeah it's almost like it's the same concept as your car engine or something. Wild.

"Bonked me on the head."
I like that, that's really funny! Imma start using that too describe killer attacks just for fun.
1 -
I love most of them too! Just not the weird engine revving one that was just added bc it downs out all the others so I can't hear them anymore :(
2 -
Apart from the technical issues, I just dont like the look of them.
They look very...Steampunk, so imo the fit nicely on the Deathslinger Map but on the rest they look a bit odd, a generator generally does not look like that.
My dream would be custom assets per realm, nasty rusty mud and slug and slimey plant covered gens and pallets for swamp.
Industrial modern stuff for Macmillian
Something maybe very typical for Africa for Autohaven, idk maybe Honda lookalike generators.

I agree. Might be totally possible that I dont notice them anymore after a few days, but I find them kinda annoying. Those are like 3 samples which get repeated over and over again. They dont really fit and having to hear them for 80 seconds is not really nice to hear.
5 -
I said it in a weird way. I meant about it being annoying because it's repetitive, that's all.

Looks like Technician was shadow-buffed.

Anyone who drives a car cringes at the sound of someone flooding the engine and that is what the new generator sound fx sound like. This is not something that I will sit through and I hope it is addressed soon.
5 -
They definitely needed clearer repair noises, it's part of the balance of the game.
Noises of an engine that won't start when the pistons are already moving is not what the game needed though.

The new gen sounds sound like a mechanical horse dying.
I don't mind louder gen sounds but these ones are just awful. It's also frustrating that when I turn my camera to look around while on a gen my camera goes inside the gen and I can't see anything.

I am not a fan of the new sounds either.
When the new gens and animations were done they looked great and it made gens mor4 interesting again.
The different sounds playing depending on what side you were really cool.
This update hit and it actually makes me not want to do gens. The new sounds on the loop are really bad. The noise doesn't fit as its like you are constantly trying to start it with a sound which doesn't even fit along with an injured horse in the background.
Some things don't need changed for the sake of it and these sounds were one of them. The change doesn't add anything to the game and is really quite annoying after a few matches.
Also I am still hoping Billy's roar to be changed to something more menacing as that roar is terribly out of place and its just too commical sounding.

Remember.. killers have to endure that damn chase music that drowns out all other sounds in every chase.
But i would love them to tone these sounds down
3 -
I think the sound effects themselves are fine, but the volume is a tad bit loud. I wouldn't mind them lowering it down a little alongside killer's chase music where hearing anything else is very difficult.

I agree, oddly enough it also affects my skill check reaction, with all those engine noises rattling around that are pretty loud,I have an ever harder now.Not to mention when you get 10 skill checks in the spam of few seconds.
1 -
Personally I love them and think they're fine with how loud they are. Have you ever started a generator in real life? It's way louder than in dead by daylight.
2 -
That's the point. The previous noise was to quiet to the point you could do the gen next to the killer while they were chasing and they would have no idea. The killer also had to face check every gen just to know if someone was working on it and survivors could hear stealth killers approach because there was practically no noise.
Take the new noise or go back to the old noises. Silent gens were bad.

Lol I mean it's more spicy than just saying you were hit. Plus doctors weapon is sort of blunt so bonk is a good term to use 😂

I like the idea of making generators more noisy, but the sound of a car engine which won't start seems kinda out of place.
1 -
i noticed it first match as killer, it would change sounds when someone would get off the gen which was helpful. you could also tell if the gen was close to being done or not too

I love the new sounds. This makes Gens harder. I believe this is a great addition. Stop complaining everyone. Thanks devs. Again GREAT.

The engine turn over sound should only happen when gen is done. A nice varoom upon starting.
