RIP Cross Play

When cross play first became available, I loved it! Lobbies were quick and to start with I was matched against people of my own skill level (a shame that got turned off) which was great for killer rounds - I actually enjoyed playing killer again. Lobbies were quick, we could get in more matches and a lot of fun was being had. I was so enthusiastic for the game again, something that wasn't the case for quite some time and I'd been rarely playing. Cross play had breathed new life into it.

But you had to spoil it.

Games have been increasing difficult on both sides and it's always off platform and often PC (judging by the odd characters/symbols in their names) that are causing it (for reference, I'm on PS4). To start with, it was 'us v them' - PS4 players were repeatedly ignored by off platform players, who would team up and help each other but not myself or anyone else on PS4. Some of the killers that were off platform seemed to favour others on other platforms. It wasn't every match to start with but now it seems to be more often the case then not.

What has really killed it in my view though, is the hacking and cheating and again it's off platform players - PC I assume where hacking is concerned. As killer, I had a Claudette who waited for me to hit her (she chased after me while carrying another survivor to the hook), let me down her and as soon as we got to the hoo, the game froze, only releasing when she had wriggled free. She DC'd within a minute after that. My brother reckons it was a lag switch, as every time I got in a chase with her, my killer began hopping back and forth, or off to the side. This has happened several times and to begin with I thought it was a bug but now I believe it is lag.

I had a Kate on Hawkins in the newest outfit, who emitted columns of light and a ringing sound, who proceeded to follow me around until the killer was alerted, who downed me as she blocked my escape. She DC'd soon after she'd done this to other survivors.

The final straw was yesterday, after the update went live. Three matches in a row with killers who seemed to gain the ability to see through walls, or had abilities they shouldn't have had (such as a billy who could run impossibly fast and turn so sharp while revving up their chainsaw). Matches were over in minutes with no one having chance to do anything. We checked the perks and add ons after each match and there was nothing that would have given them the powers they had. At this point, I was playing in a 3 man SWF who were all complaining of cheating (two of us are generally green/purple ranks once we've ranked up after rank reset, the other is new to the game but learning fast). On top of that, the solo survivor, who we were trying to help, screwed us over each match (a Nea who hid the whole match for example), a P2 Claudette who refused to do anything to help anyone but herself and a David who kept trying to pin me to heal me, but apart from the unhook did little else all game and was soon taken out by the killer).

So we turned off cross play and it won't be going on again. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of PS4 players who are bad or toxic players, but at least they don't cheat/hack. In fact, our first match after switching cross play off was much better and the lobby was available just as quickly.

tl/dr: cross play ruined by cheaters and hackers from other platforms (mostly PC) so it's been switched off!

It's always amazing how some people encounter consequitive cheaters while I have seen maybe a dozen in all my years of gaming experience most of them in cod.

I only made it once - it didn't post right away as it had to be approved. if two have gone up then it's down to a glitch in the forum - it's not working right for me at the moment. Thank you for bringing it to my attention though, I've put in a report to have the duplicate removed.

Looks like it is common to treat skilled players as cheaters

If you mean the duplicate post, that wasn't down to me; it was waiting approval and I don't know if it was a glitch or two people approved it but I've put in a report to have the duplicate removed.

Not at all, I'd rather have skilled players and have a good match then potatoes who bring nothing to contribute. But cheaters and hackers ruin the game for everyone and it looks like the only way to avoid playing with them is lose cross play. A shame but necessary.

Oh, yeah idk. I haven’t ever seen a duplicate post before, so that was weird.

For what it’s worth tho, as a console gamer, I turned off crossplay 2 days after it debuted. Sth about it jus didn’t feel right... still doesn’t. Maybs sth will change to make the feature better.

I’ll happily game w only my PS4 fam, now

I don't blame you, we talked about it but decided to give cross play a go and initially it was great but has got increasingly worse over the last couple of weeks so we're back to PS4 only.

The amount of cheaters that I have seen can be counted on one hand, even there i am not really completely sure whether it has been actually cheating or just some kind of bug, lags or whatever. People are fast to cry cheats. I was accused several times to use an aimbot with nurse due to precise blinks. I even uploaded the game to make a mockery of the guy but uhm yeah that person was convinced i did cheat, even then.

Once I thought I had a cheating claudette, permanent sprint burst, but I checked and it was fairly common bug back then. I mean you know, make some evidence (video capture) because I think dbd is not that lucrative for coders to actually make cheats. This is like the most important thing, it has to be lucrative for people to make cheats.

Judging by the fact that you don't know about map marker addons and Billy's mechanics I assume you're quite new to the game. None of the things you described sound like cheats - it's just things that new players don't understand and therefore assume the other player is cheating.

Also, PC players teaming up against console players is not a thing.. You've been reading too many conspiracy theories my friend..

    P. S. The hook thing is a bug that happens constantly at the moment

Man, I have 150 hours in this game on PC but didn't face a cheater even a single time

Sometimes you want to point at someone and scream "Cheater! Cheater!" but then you realize that its someone who's better in this game than you. Yesterday I chased a survivor for 5 minutes, I just couldn't catch him, it was horrible for me - it looked like he is just way faster than others. However, he wasn't really faster - just better at utilizing the environment than me. No chance you could see that many cheaters at the same game while I saw none for that long period of time.

I've been playing a while and why I don't play as Billy, my brother does and he looked at the perks and add ons with me - he wasn't running anything that would have allowed him to do what he was doing. I do check before I call cheat.

I call BS on your comment about PC players teaming up against console players - I've seen it frequently since cross play went live.

I think we'll have to agree to disagree, especially with your last sentence.

Then it's an add on that was used to troll other players.

Aren’t the killers partially at fault for instigating that scenario, and do the killers ever get in trouble for encouraging the culprit to lead them to the other survivor?

How do killers instigate that? Survivors are the ones who decide to become turncoats.

I wish I had recorded it but I didn't think to do a retrospective capture at the end of the match. Maybe I should record all my games in future.

I'm well aware there are bugs and lag spikes, I'm well used to those having experienced them over the whole time I've been playing this game but this feels different and I have others in the team who experienced it and agreed with me that it felt that it was cheating or hacks; maybe it was some sort of exploit they had found, but that would still be cheating. Whatever was going on, it was the off-PS4 players that were causing the issue, so cross play sadly had to go.

I don't necessarily agree that it has to be lucrative to cheat/hack; I honestly think there are those who will find a way to cheat or hack, just for the fun of it, or for making other players suffer. They get off on it. Now I'm free of it.
