I thought this was a joke...
... but after listening to this little ditty right here, I find myself in shock at the fact that this is a train we should be aboard.
If Steve gets in Smash, Herobrine gets in DBD. Make it happen.

I mean, conceptually, Herobrine is pretty interesting from a paranormal horror sense. He's a very enigmatic being that we know very little about. We never actually see him, we don't know who he is, we never hear him speak—he's just a mysterious spectre. We don't know what he wants with us, but it certainly can't be good.
But like, at the same time, you know... Minecraft.

Kids and their fantasies ...

But the reason the game is M-rated is so little kids don't play it. I don't see any issue here. Plus, FNAF is rated "PG-13 for disturbing/violent content, some language, and horror", pretty much on-par with what is in DBD, though not as much blood-and-gore. It's up the parents to monitor what their kids play.

"It's up the parents to monitor what their kids play."
OH BOY! If only they actually did! I've actually had a game where a survivor ran out with an active Reverse Bear Trap, die, and question me on what happened. Then also admitted to being too young to watch the actual SAW movies, and I'm like "######### KID? THIS GAME IS MA15+!" to myself.
If a minor comes into my work and tries to buy something, they're removed pretty bloody quickly. The joys of working in liquor.

The design of Herobrine as a block-designed character would grate heavily against the visuals of DBD to be effective, especially with the graphical overhaul currently being implemented.
What they could do instead is use Herobrine as inspiration. Maybe, instead of a character of a deceased person within the videogame, they make a Killer that feels out of place within the realm. Like Freddy, it seems to phase in and out, and maybe the story could be of a Survivor thrown into the void but somehow their soul has split or created a Killer that is able to stay within the realm.
Convoluted, yes. Needs a lot of work. But whilst Herobrine is a creepy urban legend, his design would cause issues with immersion and certainly from a horror perspective it would be comical to be chased by a lump of boxes.
