I gave up against Spirit and I'm not proud of it, please give some advice.
So I'm going for the "No Mither" challenge in the archives, but get frustrated after getting spirit twice in a row. The first match wasn't too bad, but I got caught in chase very quickly. The next match I got matched against the same Stridor Spirit who knew I wasn't running Decisive Strike and relentlessly tunneled me into the ground.
Now I'm not happy that I screwed my teammates over, so I'm asking if anyone has any advice on if not counter Spirit completely, at least buy myself a few extra seconds in chase. I've tried breaking LOS and walking, doesn't work. I've tried Window vaulting quietly and back, didn't work. I've tried throwing pallet early, and breaking LOS, nothing. Iron WIll barely does anything since every Spirit runs Stridor as well.
Call me a nub for having played this game for nearly 1800 hours and still being shite against Spirit. I usually play killer mostly but have been playing survivor near exclusively recently and so I have to deal with spirits I never learned to face. I admit I have to get good so ANY advice on how to go about that against her will be appreciated.

From what people have told me, Spirit's core design is to strip the player of any information because that's "pArT oF her DeSiGn". So by definition, Spirit has no effective way of countering her and anyone who says she does whilst also saying her lack of info is a part of her whole design are talking out their ass. She's bs in a chase so don't give her one and do gens. That's kind of it.

Hrm. I'm torn. Look, there are only two alternatives here and neither of them is good. I think:
- You are lying about your nearly 1800 hours.
- Or, you are beyond help.
If you have that many hours invested in this game, you would not be asking for our help in this way. What you describe and how you say it makes me think you must be fairly new. If I'm right about that, why lie? There is no shame in being new and asking for help. I think, however, if you are telling truth things are far worse. I had a dog once and I paid money to have him trained by a professional because I couldn't do anything with him. The trainer refunded everything but the deposit and said, "some dogs can't be trained; your dog is one of those."
I'll go ahead an play the devil's advocate here. Just keep playing matches. Statistically you will get a match that doesn't have the Spirit in short order. I played something like twenty matches today and I didn't pull a single Spirit. With almost 1800 hours of experience, you should know that just going forward you will get a match without your nemesis.

I felt bad about being so direct, and perhaps harsh. I've saved you some trouble. These should help:

My Xbox Gamer tag is ExcelSword13, on which I have around 1100 hours clocked. My Steam name is ExcelSword, on which I have 695 hours. Feel free to search me on either platform, instead of just coming along and completely dismissing my whole post. I decided to ask for help because I thought perhaps some people would show a sense of community and offer tips to help other improve.
I am pretty much a killer main; that is where most of my hours are logged. I actually played a whole lot of spirit for the first half a year after she was released, and then put her down because I thought she was too strong. I admit I am not the best survivor and I mostly play solo as one. Believe it or not some people actually do have a limit on their abilities to learn completely on their own, so instead of being elitist maybe offer some actual advice?
I only started encountering Spirits frequently when I switched to PC this March, and while I think I am decent at looping other killers, I always tended to just accept my fate against spirit after hearing so many people say she has no counter. But this isn't a healthy way of improving so I thought perhaps I would see if anyone has ANYTHING to help last longer against her.

And I'm happy to eat crow and accept your word, although it still boggles my mind. I already posted you a link which will take you to some excellent videos which can explain her far better than I can in text. I've watched most of these myself. For what it is worth, my own experience against the Spirit is you Mind Game her. That's it. She is going to rush around the board invisible in her weird flying pseudo-teleportation going where she thinks people will be. Your problem is No Mither (which is crap). You make noise because you are injured. For the record, not all Spirits take Stridor. You have to get an idea where the Generators are and be aware she is going to run patterns, patrolling them in hopes of popping out thin air for a quick hit.
Diversions are useful. Noisy teammates are even more helpful. Since you play Killer, put that knowledge to use. If you would respond to something, assume that is where she is going.

True has made a video in which he explains how you can counter Spirit. It works quite well, even without Iron Will/Stridor.
The other advice I can give you is play her. Play her for a longer time. That will give you a better understanding about the mindset a Spirit is going to have and you will also encounter survivors who will show you some possible ways of countering or confusing you.
But in the end it's like versing a strong Nurse. You can be lucky with outsmarting the killer but it will probably not work for a long time. Which isn't really a problem considering you can easily win against a Spirit, or any other strong killer, by just gen rushing. This depends on your team though. If you have decent survivors on your team it doesn't matter if the Spirit downs you in under 10 second. You can still win.
6 -
"boggles the mind" Well then if you are such a god at this game why don't you explain how you "Mind game" her,? I bought into Scottjund's claim that she is uncounterable; that's why I just accepted I would die against her every time I faced her without really trying. I made this post to see if anyone besides the big names has something to help. Apparently you have found a way to "mindgame" her that isn't just taking a random guess, feel free to share it with us?
Clearly you can last at least a minute against Spirit the way you talk. How silly I must be, having so many hours and still not lasting longer than 20 seconds against one.
4 -
This is how you offer advice without being condescending, thank you. I was thinking I'll just pick her up again and play with stridor, so that I can try and see what any survivors can do to throw me off. With a good headset though it doesn't matter, when I played her months ago frequently I could follow the sound of people's footfalls even with Iron Will, have no idea how you would "mindgame" that. Maybe sound bugs that are in the game recently will change this.
5 -
Honestly, no reason to be ashamed or proud. DCing against being tunneled off the hook by a killer player that has used a perk to remove the only slight counterplay possible against her choice of killer, when you're clearly running a meme perk that hinders you, is perfectly valid.
0 -
you cant do anything against a good spirit with stridor in chase. you have to play immersed and rush gens as fast as possible.
0 -
Hope she's bad and not running Stridor. If she has Stridor, you ain't gonna mindgame her. Sadly it's as simple as that.
If sounds were working, you'd hear her footsteps and be able to predict/react a bit, as a part of an actual mindgame, but the one time they worked, a hotfix happened a week later and sounds became bugged again.

I never claimed to be a God at this game. I'm relatively new. I'm a Rank-4 Killer (Myers exclusive) and a Rank-8 Survivor. I do not have near the hours in the game that you have. The system has me at over a thousand but I think it is counting time where I'm signed into the game but not playing matches. I'd guess I have about 600-700 hours tops.
I fight the Spirit, statistically, about the same amount as anyone else. I don't usually have any problems in those matches. But then again, I don't mind fighting the Nurse either. My Achilles Heel is the Pig. I suck against her. There is no rhyme or reason to it. I just perform very poorly against Pig. I don't rage quit though. I think your admission of this behavior caused me to be a bit strident and harsh with you. I have very little patience for those who disconnect. I am digressing though, so I'll go back to the subject at hand.
You can't play Aggro against a Spirit. You need to take a page from Jake and Claudette types. As I said before, you Mind Game her in respect that you are predicting where she is heading and looking for the pattern in her patrols. She WILL have a pattern. It takes a bit of talent to use her power correctly and good map knowledge. The Spirit, when not in chases, is going to quickly conform to a repetitive pattern of flying around. Remember, she can't see Survivors while doing so. She is guessing where they are going to be, or using some Perk to hedge her bets. She only has so much time before the Haunting kicks her back out so she has to be very efficient in flight, and thus a pattern forms in every match. You can use that against her.

Tru3's video full of 'counterplay' doesn't work against anyone with half a brain and it's depressing he thought that would be helpful; wasting resources and yet still going down in a short amount of time is not counterplay.
5 -
I used it a lot of times and it works against most Spirits.
You will always go down in a short amount of time against a Spirit. That will also happen against a good Nurse. That's just something you have to expect and accept. But it's better to buy yourself and the team every second you can get instead of doing nothing. Mindgaming a Spirit or a Nurse one time eventhough you go down shortly after is a win for the team. Tru3 even said it in his video: "This game isnt a 1v1, the killer IS supposed to have the advantage in a 1v1 situation and the survivor doesnt need to escape to rank up nor be chased for 5 gens. Your goal as a survivor is to waste as much time as you can from them in chase while the others do gens".
And I also wouldn't call it wasting resourses considering there are in most cases plenty enough pallets and even if you would waste all of them it is probably already endgame and everyone escapes. Throwing down a pallet to have a chance to have a longer chase against a killer, that doesn't really care that much about pallets anyways, is not a bad thing.

I decided to play a match as spirit after many months without playing her and even I slaughtered this team being so rusty, and I let the last one go. 2 of them even had iron will, and while it threw me off at first once I knew they had it I just listened to their footfalls as well as just standing still and seeing how they react before phasing for real. I wasn't even using Stridor myself, but if I was what on earth could they do other than rush gens?
1 -
Pretty much nothing other than hoping that you mess up and get a bit more time.
0 -
Watch her idle animation carefully. If it resets, then she’s phasing. It surprised the hell out of me when I first saw it.
As for the tunneling, that’s more on the Killer player than the actual Killer. Did your teammates at least finish the rest of the gens and escape?

Is this confirmed? and even so if a Spirit knew about this what stops them from just tapping the power button and faking this if they think the survivor is looking for this? I already fake my power sometimes when I see people try to blind me to check if I'm faking by phasing on the spot.
And yeah that's the risk I take if I play solo survivor it seems, hoping my teammates do generators.

my advice is don't dc and at least if you do don't put it here for everyone to see lol.
Post edited by Gay Myers (Luzi) on1 -
she has no direct or consistent counterplay, its pure luck. Ask any experienced killer and survivor main out there who arent delusional (like a certain twitch streamer) and they will say the same. Just hope you made the right move thats all you can do
1 -
So easy... Check it:
Just stop moving, or walk, or run. 1 in 3 chance of avoiding a hit.
Also do bones, unless it's haunted grounds and if you get interrupt-grabbed just don't do that.
That help?
Basically do everything and or nothing 😁.
Spirit is tricky lol
1 -
Your best bet at countering Spirit is playing her and understanding how she thinks and what she would do in a situation!
Spirit is hated amongst the survivor community because she gives no feedback to survivor's! That is the purpose of Spirit, and sadly I'm a firm believer that Spirit is a product of what's wrong with looping because she flips the script on survivor's! Survivor's don't like guessing, but almost everything about killer is guessing!

I just LOVE when the survivor mains start screeching from top of their lungs about how the killer has to be nerfed because "he's designed poorly", it really brings a smile to my face. Instead of improving as a player they simply DEMAND non-stop for a nerf. Hilarious.
1 -
#1 Play her yourself. Seriously. Give her a try, it really shows you how to counter her if you get good survivors. You get a good feeling of what she can do and what she can't do. For example if she is phasewalking for 4 seconds I know I can most likely vault the window in front of me because her phasewalk is running out in 1 second so she can't make it all around (without addons).
#2 Spine Chill, Iron Will, Sprint Burst, Fixated. If she tries to "fake" a phasewalk you can tell if spine chill goes away while the husk is staring at you. It also helps knowing if she is coming for you in a phase walk. Iron will really counters her if you are injured. And to avoid the first hit you use sprint burst, fixated helps a lot to mindgame her when she is phasewalking since you dont leave scratchmarks when you walk and you can walk faster.
3 -
Iron Will, Decisive Strike, No Mither and Dead Hard. Keep playing until you get out.
Worst comes to worst, I can try to help you if you need and I have time. I'm also an Xbox player, but as RespectfulNancyMain and I have found out, region is important for lag. I'm on Aus Sydney servers.

You said concisely what I couldn't quite put into words. You can't play Aggro against her. In the case of Spirit, she is best fought by not getting into the chases to begin with, and if you do drag them out long enough to get her to try to phase on you (but don't fall for the fake) and then go a different direction based on the patterns you have seen her display. I could not agree more with you that the Spirit was crafted to throw a monkey wrench into the normal looping counter. There are lots of Killers now that are particularly adept at undermining (if not outright destroying) one particular counter.
The best way to fight the Spirit is full on hide and seek, evasion, and studying her pattern in the game. She will develop a flight path to try and look for the Survivors.
1 -
No Mither + Iron Will 100% counters Stridor. Just make sure you’re playing extra cautious that you don’t end up in chases to begin with, but she absolutely CANNOT hear you unless you’re in the dying state.
So when you’re in a chase, juking her shouldn’t be as difficult because there is no way for her to track you while she is phasing, provided you’re not leaving scratchmarks or disturbing crows.
1 -
Excelsword deserves and is getting an apology. I was rude and condescending. Even last night, when I was tilted by the disconnect issue and lacking sleep, I quickly realized the post was over the top. Reading it this morning I am deeply embarrassed by the snottiness of my posts. When someone asks for help here, they should get it. Excelsword, for what it is worth, this heartfelt.
4 -
So her animation resetting is an inconsistent bug? Honestly that doesn’t surprise me.
0 -
Yeah, just use the worst survivor perk in the game to "counter" her.
Don't forget that you still have footstep sounds (especially on certain maps like swamp or red forest),sounds when you move through grass etc.
1 -
I think it's silly when people say to use x y z perk to counter a single killer. Literally, the best counter to Spirit without using specific perks is stealthing to avoid chases, normal looping when she's out of her power, and holding W to get as much distance as possible once she hits you.
Against a good spirit, all of those "mindgames" and "counters" are thrown out the window. You can try them if you believe the spirit isn't that seasoned. Also, hope that your teammates are doing gens.
3 -
Omg I have a good headset and I can't hear anything while playing her 😭 maybe it's bugs but idk ;-;

Hey! I only have about 100 hours in DbD but I really enjoy going against Spirit! My tips to get used to versing her are:
- Scratch mark juking! The most underused technique in this game BY FAR. Try and run Fixated to get used to your scratch mark patterns and learn where and how to use them. I usually like portraying like if I left the pallet by walking around it, then leaving some scratch marks a bit away to then go back to the pallet.
- Run Iron Will. A good Spirit will be always able to track you without it if she injures you, and I don't know why Stridor isn't used that often but let's hope it remains as is.
- Distractions are good against Spirit. If you're not soloing and a friend is nearby you, have them fast vault a window or exit a locker, that will distract the Spirit and she may think you got a lot of distance.
- If you know she's gen patrolling, STOP WORKING ON THE GEN. I've got saved of a grab more times than I'd like to admit thanks to this, but I know many people will fail to achieve this. Using Spine Chill or Premonition helps.
- Quick and Quiet is soooooooooo good against her especially if you pair it with Head On. They won't be afraid to grab you especially if it's not your second hook and they will eat that stun.
- Extra tip: only heal if you know she's chasing someone else, Nurse's Calling is a popular Spirit perk and blah blah blah.
I hope any of these were of help!
2 -
They did say that they were encountering Spirit with Stridor a lot while trying to do the No Mither challenge.
If they’re adamant about persisting with attempting the challenge, may as we’ll pair it with Iron Will. Say what you will about No Mither, but there is no denying that the No Mither + Iron Will combo against a Spirit running Stridor gives the survivor a distinct advantage over other survivors that can still be heard.
0 -
If it makes you feel better at 3k hours still have no real consistent way to beat a spirit. All I can tell you is main iron will, pray shes bad, pray she doesnt have a good headset pray she has no stridor, and delay that first hit. Once she gets it, you are dead. Oh yeah and dont forget to make correct guesses which are heavily in the killers favor multiple times in a row to last in chase.
0 -
The only counter Spirit has is stealth and never being spotted and never starting a chase for once you are in one you are pretty much roast the very moment she starts phasing.
I remember the first time I played Spirit when her Tome was out, HOLY MOLLY, I knew she was easy win but I really didnt expect that kind of efficiency, the thing blaffled me the most was thinking about all those games I played against her where more than 1 Survivor escaped after powering 5 gens. The change from Myers and Jigsaw (the ones I usually play) was incredible (no, I dont main her now, I completed the challenges, the achievements and shelved her).

I already regretted what I threw back at you when I woke up this morning, I wasn't too kind as well. As a mostly solo I also hate when my teammates give up in my matches, so to not show the same respect myself is hypocritical and I deeply regret it.
I'm sorry for being cold towards you; you did try to throw some tips my way, which is all I was asking for.
0 -
It's not confirmed whatosever; about as valid as 'the shards shine when she phases.'
0 -
I'm grateful for all the people who have posted here; a lot of good ideas being shared and passed around.
It seems unfortunate that the general consensus is still what I expected; you have very little agency in a chase against Spirit, so either don't get found in the first place or try to rush gens. However some advice here I've taken to heart and even if they help me last 10 seconds longer than usually that's already more than I can ask for.
I'm gonna start playing Spirit a bit more frequently now, it really is the best way to learn what works and what doesn't. I actually have a tip of my own to share that might help against her: The sounds of your injured cries gets reduced while you are crouching. Now I don't know if this counters Stridor if you are running Iron Will, but I noticed this earlier this month after the patch and it has helped me in general to stay hidden against all killers while injured.
Again thanks for all the advice, even if I hate facing Spirit, I won't improve if I don't try.

Cool beans. Hopefully we will be fighting in the trenches against some Killer sometime, or against one another for some good games. It is bound to happen at some point. Me, I'm racing a fast approaching Halloween. I don't want to let Big Daddy Myers down, and want to reach Rank-1 before that happens. Advancement is down to a crawl. Against Red Rank Survivors and Red Rank SWF I'm lucky if I hold my ground rather than lose a pip! The struggle is real.
I did face a Spirit today and accidentally kind of verified some advice another person in this thread gave. I was doing figure eights in a jungle gym and retracing my own scratch marks. Every time I did this, I would wait a second till she was out of sight and them walk shortly to get behind terrain long enough for her to come around or phase jump and continue following. The second she did I would beeline straight away from the jungle gym. It worked most of the time. Kind of like the Nurse, the Spirit wants to use her phase jump, rather than run you down like a normal M1 and that is where I found I could beat her in the loops. All that being said, I still just try to hide and seek her as much as possible. I'm a subpar Looper and leave that to the Pros.
1 -
Your best bet against her is pallets and windows. Try to make yourself as unpredictable as possible when she is phasing around these and you could fool her.
Unfortunately it is kind of luck based that she messes up but you can make it more likely she messes up with this.
If she's phasing to you when your out in the open and injured, you're pretty much screwed so you want to try and run across open areas only after she has just phased so you have time to get somewhere safer
0 -
I do run with Spine Chill and when I know I'm running against a Spirit I move the second it flashes, just abandon the area. I'm almost always long gone before she phases in. Against her I NEVER commit to a Gen. Spine Chill is the light and the way. It says go, I go.
0 -
As a Spirit main, the problem with Spine Chill is that once she identifies that you have Spine Chill she can take advantage of that perk and use it to mindgame survivor's!
0 -
What makes her "brain dead"? Is it the fact that she flips the script on survivor's and exploits the problem with looping? Is it the fact that you know how to actually listen and predict survivor's?
I'm just curious as to why a unique killer that has to depend on a mechanic that breaks every patch and is technically getting shadow nerf with every sound tuning is considered "Brain Dead"?
0 -
General rule of thumb is to make distance early and maintain as much distance as possible.
The worst thing you can do is give the Spirit a lot of time to think and gather information while she's phasing. You essentially want to make distance and then force her to make a decision at a pallet or window towards the end of her phase.
Don't ever be a stationary target while injured. Crouch to mask healthy breathing by half. Watch where you step. Avoid grass if you can.
At low wall pallets, my best advice is to not put yourself there in the first place. But if you don't have other options, play for the stun and run.
Ultimately Spirit is a 1v1 killer. Definitely possible to make her chases take long enough to slam gens and 4 out.
0 -
Remember her movement speed is dead slow
0 -
Hello!! I'm sorry to hear that happened, facing the Spirit once is enough for me lol. Unfortunately, a lot of the Spirits I faced used that add on to see blood when phasing, and no mither is a tough perk to use with her. My usual advice for matches is to carry urban evasion (without NM) and to stealthily go around the map. And don't fall for the mind games! You can usually hear that wind sound when she's spirit walking, so stay sharp and I hope you have good headphones. I hope this helped-- I'm not an amazing player, but I've survived a good number of matches with Spirit and these perks really helped me in getting out alive! Good luck in future matches and I hope they are more fun :)!
1 -
Honestly the real villains in all of this are behaviour for ever making players run the worst perk in the game for any reason.
