Question: Do you think there is a skill difference between PC and console players?

This isn't stating that one is better than the other. I'm just wondering what you all have observed.

I think It is. It's not just skill, the stealth meta, or aggressive gen rush meta, and killer preferences.

We have various meta differences even if in different countries. And also game play skills. There would be different game flow.

It might be my myth but i felt consoles are more likely to hide and prefer more safe gameplay, but PC prefer more aggressive gen rush.

And, in average user level, also chasing skill(change there view free on chase) could be different. Not on pro console players level. They have really good skill.

No, I don’t think there’s necessarily a difference in skill. I do think that consoles tend to have more casual players, because they’re much more accessible in many ways. (Note that I’m not using “casual” as an insult or anything, I would consider myself fairly casual and I think that the vast, vast majority of people who game are.)

The average PC player is probably the same, skill-wise, as the average console player. I do think there are more “serious” players on PC though. And there are also inbuilt advantages to playing on PC, like better overall performance, better frame rates, better controls, and the ability to customise the game somewhat (low graphics setting, Nvidia filters, stretched res, macros, etc.).

Everything except the very top skill bracket (tournament players) is on average about the same for different platforms.

I'd say it really depends as PC will beat out console on the hardware side and less fps drops and such. This game hasn't been optimized the greatest from the start and not much has changed since.

As for roles survivor will see minimal differences. As stated above maybe some sharper turns on pc and more looking behind but that's about it.

Killer would depend on killers as some probably won't play as well on console as they will on pc with accuracy or turn speed.

Well seeing as the console system has a built in auto aimbot assist and PC doesn't there is a clear skill difference.

There's a difference in input controls, which means that regardless of their skill, they're inherently capped at a certain level of play. Since this game requires quick, precise movements, keyboard and mouse are just better, so console players will seem of lower skill.

Skill wise no difference... you can learn and do good on all platforms

Performance wise PC is better... for obvious reasons

  • Momentosis
    Momentosis Member Posts: 824

    There's a difference.

Consoles are inherently limited a bit by controller.

There are also things console survivors do that only really works on console killers and not PC killers(like trying to drop their frames to make them miss).

This doesn't mean every PC player is better than console player. It just means the ceiling is way higher on PC. Same for most games(like shooters) where precise movements with MnK makes a huge differnce.

I'm gonna preface this by saying that I started on console in 2017 and switched to PC at the end of last year and have been at rank 1 both sides every season as a solo que survivor for the most part. From what I have observed, console players play the game a lot more casually than PC players do. When I am the only PC survivor in my lobby and the other 3 are cross play players, the game usually doesn't go well but there are exceptions. I will leave it at that.

PC killers are better than console killers

Survivors are basically the same just more console SWF

Wouldn't someone adapt to using a controller the same way we adapt to a mouse?

I would say if you give PC Killers and Console Killers the same equipment and an equal playing field, some Console Killers might come out ahead, simply because they've had to adapt to massive disadvantages.

That being said, I don't really think one is better than the other, but I am way more scared of a PC Nurse than a Console Nurse. Likewise, I am far more scared of a Console Trapper than a PC Trapper (sorry Otz) because in my experience, Console Trapper's place their traps in WEIRD spots and it gives me anxiety.

Yes, but that's one of the hardware limitations. Controllers offer smoother movement due to their analog sticks at the cost of lower precision.

This is why killers like Nurse or Huntress are considered to be significantly scarier on PC than on console (Nurse used to be considered bottom tier on Console because the low precision and poor framerate made her power feel too unwieldy to be playable). Players can obviously become great with any killer regardless of input device, but at the absolute highest levels of play Mouse + Keyboard is superior to Controller in most genres (only main exceptions are racers and platformers).

Of course there is. Console survivors trip around the map like an excursion from elementary school. Barely do gens. Hide at slightest rattle. Majority of console killers camps and tunnels. PC ones do too, of course, but not so regularly. I only had crossplay on for a week, couldn't stand it.

Not so much a Skill difference but rather limited capability. Console players don't have as much movement sensitivity and also are locked at 30fps(Not including the Next Gen Consoles). You're also unable to perform flick hits like you can with Killers on PC with a mouse and keyboard. It's reasons like this that Nurse is considered to be the worst killer in the game on every platform aside from PC where she's one of the best.

No. Unlike a lot of people, I actively attempt to discard my personal bias, and have come to the conclusion that everyone sucks equally. Especially when some stuck-up player blames their console teammates or a console killer for whatever went wrong and completly ignored that they played like shite as well.

Seriously, the post-game chat can be so revealing as to people's actual nature.

Answer: No. This game is as simple as it gets. Everything you can learn about this game on pc you can learn on console just as easily. The PC and console versions of DbD aren't mechanically challenging or demanding in the slightest compared to most other multiplayer games, it was designed that way lmao. Whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you, personally I like that this game is very casual. Grind-wise this game is abysmal, the sheer amount of content you have to grind for and the poor BP yield isn't new player-friendly at ALL. But that's an entirely different can of worms.

Since i recently bought the switch version, i must say the crontrolls and especially the framerate there is awfull. Otherwise i dont see any advantages of PC or Console exceps of possible hacks and this stupid stretched res. of course.

I also didnt notice any skill differences.

All play the same for me.

  • JPLongstreet
    JPLongstreet Member Posts: 5,868

Turning as a console killer is much more limited, which is why we can be spun and followed and such much more easily. And "flicking" really doesn't exist. You just cannot turn fast enough, or react fast enough, no matter the settings.

Add that to inconsistent frames, rollercoaster pings, bad lag, worse latency, aim-dressing costing you hits, and then sprinkle in the bugs & stuff we all share. Plus our PS cousins got wreaked this last patch.

No one should really wonder why there are few console killers out hunting, Crossplay or no.

  • JPLongstreet
    JPLongstreet Member Posts: 5,868

We are not locked at 30fps at all. Many other games can and do run smoothly at double that on my Xbox. It's DBD that doesn't. We can drop into the teens for frames on the indoir maps, or depending on what's going on anywhere.

    Console players have:

    • Higher input delays
    • Worse frames
    • Abysmal turn speed/precision
    • (Usually, but not always) Stereo sound, playing from a couch in their living room

Their skill is a mute point.

    Their setups are bad.

It's easy as hell to deal with a Legion who can't make fine adjustments, can't discern directional sounds, drops to 10 frames whenever he gets a hit, and has 50 ping between his controller and his console.

If we're talking survivors, they can still get a decent ways off of being flat out overpowered, but they're still a lot easier to beat than a PC player with comparable skill/loadout. It doesn't help them any that, until recently, they've been getting used to ONLY console killers, meaning they have scarcely a clue what to do against a PC Nurse/Huntress/Slinger.

    Oh absolutely.

Ever since consoles joined my lobbies, there's been more running straightforward without plans and/or purpose.

I mean they'll use loops like normal, but from what i'm seeing, they don't look back as often, and thus going around and hitting them on the other side is somewhat more easy to pull off.

They also seem to like to 360 a lot more, which just never works.

Interesting :o Being a PC player, I never really see what the consoles do on the team during chases.

Imagine it taking twice as long for you to swing the camera behind you and then back again to see where you're going. That's console life.

Also even I noticed fewer console survs using dh as it is much more of a crap shoot if it will work or not, and we all know how dh users move in a chase. One of the best surv perks used less because of platform performance alone. Just one example.

I'd say when the performance on ps4 is decent I can do anything pc can besides obviously no scope like precision with slinger/huntress and doing 360s quite as tight

As a primarily console survivor playing more on PC lately, I've noticed that I play more stealthily and patiently than similarly ranked PC players.

Not that one's better or worse, I'm just more likely to sneak and hide. And they're more likely to run and loop.

  • MrPenguin
    MrPenguin Member Posts: 2,426

I'd say its more a control difference. Everything on console is sloppier and slower due to controller. Even just looking behind you. You could have 2 equally skilled players, but give one a controller and give one M&KB and there'd be a noticeable difference.

Additionally there's also a performance difference. Not saying PC doesn't have issues, but playing DBD on console is like trying to play through a power point presentation sometimes.

  • MrPenguin
    MrPenguin Member Posts: 2,426

I'd say that's more a controller limitation thing. It takes much longer to look around on console. Say I'm looking right, if you're coming from the left it could take me a good second or 2 to even look over that way, let alone react. Not to mention lets say you come right after I turn away, it could take 2-4 seconds to look back that way. Whereas on pc is just flip, flip, flip.

Same with running, its very easy to run into a wall if you're looking behind you because of how long looking back then looking forward again can take all together, so a lot of console players play in a way they look forward as much as they can afford. Console you have to look back and judge how long you can look forward based on distance from the killer and if you have time to look back again. Again, on pc its just flip, flip, flip.

    Honestly, no.

I play on PS4 and all I’ve realised is that there’s good and bad players on every platform. I was recently in one of Morf’s matches and I didn’t once feel inferior to him or the rest of the team (they were also PC) as I know how to play the game. Obviously the PC has better performance, but I’m used to PS4 and it doesn’t hinder me in the slightest.

The only difference I’ve noticed as killer is that PC players are able to spin around faster to try to avoid being hit. But, they all get quick scoped and hooked just the same as my fellow PS4 players. I’ve yet to go against a player where I’ve truly noticed how much harder they were to down.

If you have good game knowledge, you’ll be good on whatever platform you play. And that’s a fact.

That's a framerate issue. Looking around quickly blurs the screen into a blobby screen tearing mess. Then people blip out of existence when the server is trying to do server things.

All the Terminator scanning in the world can't help you then. I seen too many Neas urban evade into a tree to never be seen again.

In my opinion I think there is a skill difference. First you have the obvious performance issues with console and limited to controller input which puts them at a disadvantage. No, that is not a skill difference. But in my opinion or assumption I guess is that console players are more casual players and PC gamers are much more of an actual gamer.

This is based purely on my perception with no evidence to back anything up and I am potentially dead wrong. But I perceive people with a console to be the people that pick up a game from time to time and play when they have time. People with gaming PCs I just assume sit in their basement playing fps all day and are die hard gamers. Which, would lead to having better hand eye coordination and more skill.

  • HagIsBestGirl
    HagIsBestGirl Member Posts: 158

Actually, now that I think about it I saw someone mention that as a PC killer they see survivors who look back less frequently. They hypothesized that this was because they're using a gamepad.

This might actually have more of a knock on effect than I would have imagined. It's not a stretch to assume that players with a less agile and precise camera would develop a playstyle that works around that.

While PC survs with MKb have their hyper precise camera controls and can play to that strength.

Dunno how much weight there is there, but it's interesting. 🤷🏻‍♀️

  • Theres absolutly no difference at all at least on most characters except deathslinger and huntress, im in ps4 and the only thing holding me back is the frame issues the game has, like in a 40v40 huge map games like battlefront i have no frame issues at all, and then a 1v4 game makes me go on 15 frames, huh, if u see a console killer missing attacks to ur stupid 360s is because of the colosal lag they get when bloodlust kicks in, prettymuch any killer interaction with their power is laggy, some killers arent afected, but theres some killers that are almost unplayable, legions killer instinct reval is mayor cancer for frames, slaming into a wall with blight is even worse, each slam makes me go minus 10 frames per slam its insaine, imagine someone doing 360s when ur at 15 fps, it wouldnt be fun would it?? so thats it thats the only reason why its harder in console, everyone saying its harder to control because of controller, they dont know #########, the only real disadvantege is the ######### frames, and trust me, thats gonna be irrelevant when i get my ps5, and even with all the lag and frames, i make pc survivors dc to my "potato aim huntress", just to add up to the argument, i am in fact a rank 1 killer and survivor

  • Boss
    Boss Member Posts: 13,616

Yeah, i know controllers can be limiting in that way.

But whether it's skill that's limited or the console that's limited, the result hardly differs for me as their Killer.

Also, since controllers are a potential limiter, you can still question if they can truly be more skillful than that, or that they have the same amount of skill as someone who's limited to a controller.

What i mean is: If you take someone from console-exclusively to PC-exclusively, they obviously won't immediately be better.

But would they grow over time or not?

  • DBD78
    DBD78 Member Posts: 3,464

Yes playing solo survivor I almost always do better than my PC teammates. PC players are way to optimistic mostly, they lack the skill of knowing what to do and when to do it. A bit like headless chickens. But some of them are good. But we have seen this forever watching youtubers over the years against PC-survivors.

  • CheyeneKL
    CheyeneKL Member Posts: 723

I think there is a larger base of PC players with superior skills. It's not entirely the fault of console players- they're running a much lower quality game. Speaking from experience, it is literally impossible to run tight loops on the Switch, for example. I've watched one of my Switch friends run and (when I've played on Switch instead of PC) I've watched MYSELF run from various streamers' perspectives- no matter how hard you try to run close to a wall, you simply cannot due to frame drops and lower fps overall, I believe. I've even noticed myself get hit through vaults and pallet drops more often on Switch against PC vs when I play PC against PC. You can forget about getting a fast vault on a difficult window- the best you'll get is a crusty medium vault in most cases, no matter how hard you try.

It's hard to explain but if you ever get the chance, give controller on ps4/xbox/switch a try. You'll see what I mean.

Now, there are some players who seem to be able to overcome this difficulty. Either that or they have incredibly good game sense and are able to consistently call out killer mind games. But the majority of games I have- the console survivors are utterly outmatched by PC killers. Something I also personally believe with my whole heart is that a large portion of console players could literally become so much better overnight if they were able to switch from console to PC, even if they kept controller as their input. It was true with me- I constantly got shambled in chases despite a fairly decent amount of good game sense and knowledge. But as soon as I dropped Switch (after completing the last Rift pass, haha), I immediately noticed myself holding my own in chases much better than before, and all that changed was that I switched to PC.

  • danielmaster87
    danielmaster87 Member Posts: 9,414

They're about the same. It's just that PC players don't have a problem hitting skill checks, and they have the better controls. Skill checks are so bad on console, I actually miss DS sometimes. It's that bad.

Depends on what you mean by "skill". If you judge only by results only than you could say they lack skill. But then you'd have to say Spirit players are just good because they can hear and Clown players are less skilled because they're clown.

I'd measure it based on relative to others in the same situation. I don't believe its fair to just call the whole console player base worse players with how different the two are.

So while console players might not have less skill on a per person basis, they can't preform as well as pc players in a lot of cases just because of the limits they have. A good console player is not the same as a good pc player.

Performance/results =/= skill all the time. To phrase it another way: should I say you're less skilled because you lost with Clown on Ormond? No of course not. Same for console players, they just have a disadvantage and have to deal with more problems unfortunately. You take the same player and add more problems to their plate, are they less skilled? No. Will they preform as well? Also no.

The question shouldn't really be about skill, since the conditions are so different. The issue is the limitations, not the players. So its not that console players are less skilled, its just they have more problems to deal with that hinder them. Not even getting into other things like frame issues.

Are they less skilled? No I don't think so. Do they preform as well with that skill though? Also no.
