Dead by daylight was so close to be a top 5 played games on steam
Thanks to greedy developers it falled down from 8 place to somwhere beetwen 11-16
If they would made this event like they did the 2018 one and actually fix the game problems, dbd would be 2x popular as now

Hopefully they do realize that,

Its hilarious to see a new game, Phasmophobia, constantly hight (typically 2x the viewership). I hope they learn from this but given their history its unlikely...

Well, there's a Free Weekend this weekend so the numbers are bound to spike. I guess they REEAAALLY want things to look nice to their investors and shareholders, so they can brag about good numbers after this colossal failure of an event.
I am sure all the new players will looooove the state DbD is in.

I think this is massively undervaluing how many people tuned in just for Pyramid Head, and to a lesser extent how many people just had more time for games during the summer. During corona but before Silent Hill launched, DBD was averaging around 32k players. Over the last 30 days we're averaging around 32k players again.
If the event had been ridiculously cool might there have been a sugar high to bump up the player count? Yep, totally. Is the game collapsing under the weight of the devs' greed? No, definitely not.

That is a very different kind of game, though. With the VR support and jump scares aplenty that game was practically made for streamers, and once they get ahold of it popularity just skyrockets.
4 -
"Oh no, people are annoyed and not really as interested in the game, what do we do?"
"Let's just run a terrible event that artificially boosts numbers on Twitch."

so calling the devs, who have not rewarded their playerbase outside of bloodpoint codes or charms, who just keep putting new content behind paywalls, greedy is bad but calling players that don't agree with their monetization "strategies" even though they have been playing the game for years and spending a lot of money on it greedy is fine?
They are being greedy. They thank their playerbase by selling them stuff. If we want to get something "nice" from the game for free we have to grind for over 80+ hours to get it. To get just ONE thing.

Or some of the games on the list have upcoming dlc's and have increased in poularity recently?
Or the ps4 frame rate issue jas caused a drop off?
I doubt that overpriced cosmetics have anything to do with it.
Dbd all-time highest player numbers wouldn't have got it in the top 5 this month as the highest is 77000 while the 5th position is GTA 5 with 104000.
1 -
The only greedy thing they've done recently were the "Legendary" skins. Legendarily expensive. But that was after the Konami partnership who turned all their beloved franchises into gambling machines.
The Halloween thing was just terribly mismanaged.
And the Battle Pass is par for the course for pvp games. It's a way of getting several skins for much cheaper than usual through playing the game which you don't even need to buy until you're almost done anyways.

Please don't normalize this stuff, man. The gaming industry don't need more players thinking that predatory macrotransaction practices like Battle Passes are OK.
3 -
It's already normalized? Red Dead Redemption 2. Battle pass. Crossout, battle pass. Warframe, battle pass.
Predatory microtransactions is a term grabbed from mobile games that banked on you misunderstanding core concepts or forcing you into situations where you need to pay to proceed. I don't see anything in DBD that is time gated unless you're counting the characters you need for specific challenges.
2 -
Adding further onto the predatory argument, you do not know predatory until you have to buy insurance every month so that other players can't steal your ######### or delete your characters while you're offline.

MGSV?

The problem with the new players coming is they are in the newbie honeymoon period were the game feels great to play. For me it wasn't until I reached around 50 hours playtime that I started to see the game for how it really plays and how much of a grind it has.
Hopefully some stick around after the free weekend ends though

Keep in mind phasmo still has this "new" effect attracting people and streamers to look and play
You gotta look on the long term for this one, plus ots way more of an horror game and has the VR support (cause its...funny? I dont find its such a plus but people love it)

And DbD has limited streamer codes artificially inflating their viewership numbers
0 -
So.....if you like the game,.you can't criticize the developers? Strange logic

That's bound to disappear fast if they're faced against players of the opposite spectrum of skill. Nothing drives away a new person like a baby killer facing a 4 man SWF squad being ######### towards them.
