The second iteration of 2v8 is now LIVE - find out more information here: https://forums.bhvr.com/dead-by-daylight/kb/articles/480-2v8-developer-update

Am I the only one who still doesn’t like both Yamaoka and all MacMillan map graphic updates?

Not going to lie but when it was first announced that all Dead by Daylight maps were getting a Graphic update, I was excited. The Badham Preschool ones are an example of a Good graphics update, all Badham maps kept the same layout as they did before and they actually feel like the Badham maps, only better.

As for the Yamaoka and the MacMillan maps, I can’t say the same thing about those. Both Yamaoka maps seems off, and they do not feel like they were before. The maps now are so light and full of rocks, almost feels like Dead by Daylight 2. The MacMillan maps need that blue tint back. They don’t feel special as they were before. I could back then get any MacMillan map as killer and be like,” He’ll Yeah.” Now, I really do hate all the MacMillan maps. They are so dark and feel bland. Maybe it’s just me but does anyone else feel the same?

I won’t finish in a negative note as I am kind of excited for both the Autoheaven maps and the Ormond graphic updates. Especially the Ormond one, as it looks more like the teaser they gave us back in 2018. (I heard it’s not survivor sided anymore)

Copy Pasting assets, especially the grass is just weak.

I dont know why they even put in the ... ermm...lets call it: effort, to do a "graphics update" and then imo do such a lazy job of it, what is the point.

If you are going to do it and make a big deal out of it, then do it right....

Like why are so many of the effects still so cheaply done, like the fog from offerings, its just floating repeating gifs when we have physics based fog in batman arkham asylum a decade ago and that was unreal 3....

And what about those puddles of water on yamaoka...why do they move like its a freaking river? what is there heavy gusts of wind blowing over that one puddle and affecting nothing else?

Why put in effort to make an effect that makes it look less realistic/good? just have it react to survivors and killers walking through it, make it splash and ripple, go the extra mile have a survivor or killer become wet around the angles from walking through a puddle at speed....that sorta thing.

imo every realm should be build up out of its own unique assets with the only thing being copied over the lockers, gens and a pallets HOWEVER those should have unique textures per realm, for example on Swamp lockers should be rusty and pallets should be nasty moss covered and slippery/wet looking and generators should look slightly overgrown and also rusty.

On dead dawg saloon the current gens fit perfect as is with that steampunk look, now do the same for lockers, chests and pallets.

And if the want to go the extra mile, like dead dawg, every realm should have its own exit gate design (and, for however little it matters, hatch design)

I've been playing Claudette recently and she is literally invisible when walking around in some areas of macmillan. It's like when you'd get the old immersed SWF all stacking new moon offerings. She literally disappears when on a gen or near a wall.

Yamaoka is just too dark altogether for me.

I just dislike the graphic updates because at least on PS4, the new grass is awful. If you aren’t using dark traps then those creative traps I liked on Trapper aren’t viable anymore because they’re so easy to see. This means I’m forced to just put down super basic pallet traps and window traps. BOOORING.

But thats how I live as Trapper main.

Honestly, old or new Yamaoka has bamboo bush, dense grass & bush make it easy for Trapper (eventhough its painful for other Killers)

Old MacMillan was decent that traps already blend well in grass. New MacMillan is over buff for Trapper, survivors step on grass more than before.

I tried new AutoHeaven, super bright ground and low grass makes Trapper an M1 killer. I swear if AutoHeaven keep the same ground brightness & low grass when live, I will afk if I get into AutoHeaven as Trapper.

I'm glad that you main one of the weakest killers in the game and this grass is one of few things that give you joy in life, but other killers have some serious struggles with this grass starting from it being new habitat for blendettes and ending with it simply being too repetitive for already 3 different realms. Grass is not something people must be able to instantly recognise regardless of the map like pallets or lockers, so it being lower and different would be really nice.

I said this when they came out. It's too easy to spot base Trappers traps. On yamaoka they stick out like sore thumb.

I've gotten used to MacMillan maps now, I am still not sure about Yama - they look a lot more grey to me now and I'm not sure if I like it. I like a bit more colour in my maps.

I actually like Yamaoka now. I despised it before the update. Macmillan is very MEH to me. But I would say that it always as been that way.

I absolutely hate how dark macmillan is at times.

The copy&paste type of grass looks bad and it also makes 0 sounds whatsoever.

The groaning storehouse is absolutely dumb considering how easy it is to chain those two windows in the main building

    They ruined yamaoka and Macmillan.

I love all the map reworks so far. It would be nice to make them slightly less dark but other than that I have no problems.

Hmmm I hate Yamaoka now for having basically nothing. And I hate dark maps, because I can't see anything as killer. Sometimes I have a hard time even exiting the basement.

i think they are a little too dark (at least on ultra graphics you cant even keep track of a claudette running in a straight line - i literally have to chase survivors more with hearing and predicting them than actually seeing them...)

other than that i absolutely love the graphical changes!

What's the point of an update if Shelter woods is still the same awful map? The look is fine, but barely anything seems reworked beyond the absolutely useless breakable walls added.

    Yamaoka is still crap.

This. The MacMillan refresh was such a letdown for this exact reason.

They had the perfect chance to finally do something about Shelter Woods. But it's the same garbage map as before. Ugh.

Meanwhile Yamaoka feels more or less the same. A few tweaks and polish, but nothing much gameplay-wise..

I guess it comes down to different opinions. Personally I like the new maps. And I'm especially glad that awful blue tint is gone from MacMillan. Like seriously everytime I'm on that map it feels like a blue glass panel is on my TV screen, it just doesn't look good.

I feel the same on the graphics thing, but maybe it's just because I'm used to the old graphics for years. For me, the objects and ground merged better together in the old version. Now the gras and the rocks don't really melt together with the ground, but ofc the textures on the trees and rocks are much better now. Also the lighting was different and I also liked that the realms had a characteristic color scheme.

I'm just curious, but did you start playing the game after the maps began to look like garbage when on low graphics (sometime these past two years or so?) or back when it was the Unity Engine?

Because I have no idea how you could say the blue tint is awful if you're talking about how the maps were originally designed to look for launch. If you're talking about how they degraded over time and lost a lot of what was nice about them, then I can kind of understand, but your viewpoint in that case is very shallow.

@BabyCameron10 I absolutely despise the maps for many reasons, but mainly because of the excessive clutter and the downgrade in aesthetics from the atmospheric to the mundane. Badham is the least worst of them all, but I'm still not a fan of it because of all the particle effects and sounds of transformers popping on wires overhead unnecessarily forced on all players regardless of performance concerns.

something to point out is that the "old" image isn't that old and isn't what many players remember as being the best look for Macmillan.

    The following is:

    the in-between (my screenshot):

    which is gosh darn ugly.

    and the comparison:

There are many questions such as "why does the grass look so plastic?" and "why are all these unimportant things so detailed for a game largely about the interactions between the killer and survivor and not so much the walls?" and "why is it so lacking in the distinctive art style DbD had developed over the years?".

I play on console and started playing dead by daylight when it was year 2 or 3,( I don't remember exactly) the best I can say is before Freddys rework. It may look different to me because i played on console but even so it doesn't change the fact that I found the tint on MacMillan to look really bad in my opinion.

huh, I started playing around the release of the Pig patch too. I'm surprised you never liked the blue tint if you're from that far back :/

I was asking mainly because if this (below) was your first encounter with DbD graphics, I can understand (bc it's ugly), but if it wasn't...I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

Old shelter woods looks a millions times better. Only thing good I can give new shelter woods is that the ground/floor textures looks much better and more realistic.

Otherwise looks worse then the old. It doesn't look bad just not better then the old version which is the whole point of updating it. So they already failed to me

  • I don't mind Macmillan but I hate Yamoka. It's too dark you can't see anything.

I miss the blue on mcmillian maps, now it's just like the light that the moon makes, before it was really cool but most likely they will get the blue tint upgraded as well.
