Why is the repair progress bar red when you repair gens with multiple survivors?
The red colour in the progress bar in this game most of the time means it's a debuff, but how is it a debuff if multiple survivors repair on the same generator, it literally goes faster than what it would do if you repaired it alone, repairing alone is slower. The progress bar should be yellow since it's a buff. The same can be said about when you heal a survivor together with another survivor, it goes faster.

Because whilst it's faster, it's not double the time faster - the red bar shows that there's a debuff at play (depending on the amount of people repairing the generator).

But explain to me how it is a debuff? If it goes faster, that should be a positive thing.
1 -
It's classed as a debuff because it's not a straightforward "two survivors so the gen goes 50% faster kind of thing" - so to make it clear that the gen is not going at that speed, the action is classed as a debuff.
3 -
I've always thought this too. I've always hated seeing the red line. It should be yellow or something.
4 -
Still, it doesn't make any sense. It should be classed as a buff and not a debuff. Then can you explain to me why Prove Thyself is classed as a buff? It doesn't make the repairing of a gen 50% faster.
1 -
The bar goes red if you as a survivor are repairing below 100% speed.
Multiple survivors on a gen have a debuff so you are reparing at say 95% or 90% it all depends on how many are on the gen.
Prove thyself negates the penalty making it 100% again so all that does is remove the debuff of multiple survivors on a gen hence it buffs the speed.
It doesn't have to be huge numbers to be a buff or debuff.
So while its faster to repair a single gen with two on it technically its less efficient than if you were on two separate gens.

The Gen goes faster, but you as a Survivor are putting less charges to it, while you are working alone you're giving the Gen 1 charge per second, while you and one other Survivor are working on the same Gen both of you have reduced charge gain to that Gen, 0.85 charges per second for both of you, so you are technically doing it slower.
1 -
While the total progress towards the gen is faster, the efficiency penalty means that you yourself are repairing the gen slower than usual. With two survivors repairing a gen together, it goes from 1 survivor repairing at 100% to two survivors repairing at 85%.

The thing is, maybe to understand better, YOUR action speed is debuffed. The reason the bar goes up faster is that there is another survivor adding progress as well, but that is not shown/reflected in your progress bar.
Not 100% correct. The current debuff is 15% and Prove Thyself does not push you up to 100% because the speed bonus is calculated on the debuffed speed. Meaning for 2 survivors, you are at 85% and PT brings you to 0,85*1,15 = 97,75% or for 3 survivors you are at 70% and PT buffs you to 0,7*1,3 = 91%

But why does it stay red even if i use prove thyself?

@OniWantsYourMacaroni because it's still not 100% even with Prove Thyself
1 -
Because when multiple survivors work on a gen there is a debuff for every single survivor

Yeah, I don't understand this debuff thing you guys are talking about. I just see it as that it goes faster when repairing with multiple ppl.

bassicly all actions in this game require a set amount of charges, generators for example take 80 charges and healing 16 charges
one survivor normally works at 1 charge per second. so it will take 1 survivor 80 seconds to reach the 80 charges to finish a gen
When 2 survivors work on the same task they each do it at 0.85 charges per second. so 1.7 charges in total.
Which ofcourse finishes one generator faster then when you are alone but the red bar is there to show that it is not as efficient as if you both were to work on sepperate generators.
So while a single gen goes faster with multiple people. the fastest way to do all of the gens is to do them sepperatly. not only because the killer can only chase one person of a gen but also because you lose less charges per second because you work on the same task. When you hear stories of survivors finishing the gens in 3-4 minutes this is the reason they can do that. because they maximise their charges per second.
On the other hand if you look at the chart i posted earlier you can see that you should almost never work with 4 people on the same generator. there is little to no difference between 3 or 4 survivors working on a gen. and the red bar is there to try to show you that this is a thing. It's not very well explained in game though so i can understand the confusement

I’ve always thought the red bar was a weird choice to display a debuff.
First, it is not consistent with other “debuffs” like the one you get from healing against Sloppy Butcher or wiggle timer bar when wiggling against Iron Grasp. Where the bar is red.
So while yes, the bar is indicating there is a debuff, it isn’t consistent and it does the opposite of letting someone know that more than one person on a gen is better than 1.
They should have a small icon on the side, indicating our individual debuff, while making the bar yellow. That would be more clear IMO.

But doesn't Prove Thyself get rid of the efficiency penalty effectively?
1 -
It's not additive. If I recall correctly, the formula is
(1- debuff value)*(1+buff value)
0.85*1.15 =0.97. You're not going at 100% still. It would become yellow with resilience:
0.85 * 1.24 = 1.05

Math is so weird in this game i hate it

The bar goes red when your action speed for that action is less than 1 charge per a second.
The bar goes yellow when your action speed for that action is more than 1 charge per a second.
How fast the progress bar moves is irrelevant for the color of the bar as with gens multiple people working on a gen will progress the bar more than a single person.

as @MandyTalk says, if it's red that means you are not repairing as efficiently as you could and thus your progress is slowed and the red bar is an indicator of this. much like self-care is red , or with sloppy butcher it's red instead of white. :)

Each survivor other than yourself that's on the same generator gives everyone a personal 15% repair speed penalty!
Here's a chart on the penalties:
- Survivor: 0% Penalty : 1.00 c/s
- Survivors: 15% Penalty : 0.85 c/s
- Survivors: 30% Penalty : 0.70 c/s
- Survivors: 45% Penalty : 0.55 c/s
Prove Themself removes 15% of the repair penalties for co-op actions:
- Survivor: 0% Penalty : 1.00 c/s
- Survivors: 0% Penalty : 1.00 c/s
- Survivors: 15% Penalty : 0.85 c/s
- Survivors: 30% Penalty : 0.70 c/s
While Prove Thyself doesn't get rid of the penalty with more than 2 survivors on the same generator, the penalty is not as severe! 😊

Diminishing returns. You individually work on the gen slower but it's still faster since the combined efforts equal to more.

If the bar is red, your contributions to the objective is under 100% effectiveness. As a survivor, when you have 2 survivors on a gen, you all lose a bit of speed, thus you no longer are going at effectiveness and the bar turns red to signify this. Even happens with sloppy butcher when you're getting healed iirc, because you, whilst not doing any healing yourself (unless you're a self care gamer) your contribution is less than 100% since you are delaying charges being applied.
