DbD feels like a free-to-play game.
FOMO? Check.
Battle pass? Check.
Too many paid DLCs? Check.
Ridiculous amount of grind? Check.
Expensive microtransactions and currency? Check.
Why make people pay to play when this game’s business model is like every other f2p game? Make the base game free and reduce the awful grind if you want to keep selling expensive microtransactions and pumping out buggy incomplete DLCs. Improve the game, attract more players.

It's just a matter of time before we get lootboxes.

I think they should really make it free to play. I mean for me it is bc of playstation plus.
So with the playstation plus gift two years ago they have data. They should know what impact making the base game free on their income has.
So i can think of two reasons why they dont do it.
1. They would make less money in the long run
Or
2. Making it free after so many paid for it, creates too many problems
2 -
- But they have DLCs and in-game MTX.
- There are games that went free to play after they were paid. Rocket League is one recent example and they rewarded the players who owned the game before it went free. DbD can do something similar.
3 -
That's not adding any input buddy, as players we're customers at the same time. We can criticize as much as we want but ultimately it's the developers decision on what they want to implement. Sure you can go ahead and vote with your wallet since they could be just keeping count of the amount of money they're getting, but not all of the staff would be like this. As for the gaming feeling free2play I also had this in mind the very first time I played, I wondered how this felt like a mobile game that you could play for an hour or two and then move on to a different game or do what you have to.
Going by the playerbase, they probably could add other fun gamemodes such as "kill with your friends" but they can't due to the amount of players the playerbase has for this game at the moment, but that's my theory. I have used other graphs before but the peak players this game tends to have now is about 54k players. From march all the way to july of 2020 there seemed to be a gain in players but that was most likely due to new DLC and cosmetics. These are steam charts btw, this may not be including console players in this graph.
5 -
As much as I would love new game modes I also think the playerbase is too small for that. DbD has one game mode only and the queue times is long at times. If I were to choose between a new Chapter or a new game mode though I would definitely go for a new game mode. DbD came out 4 years ago after all and the gameplay can sometimes become dull after a while so a new game mode would be a nice change.

Can't wait for the epic energy system!

"There is too much grind. To stop you from grinding you can now only play 5 games per day, unless you spend $3.99 on Entity Boosters™!"
11 -
9000 shards per character ain’t cheap for a paid game
12 -
It's pretty upsetting that they choose to monetize the game so aggressively when just the price of the game and DLCs will run you like $150.
That being said, I don't see how making the game free-to-play benefits veteran players. I've already paid the price, and it would probably increase the amount of trolls and hackers. Although I fully agree they should reduce store prices across the board and reduce the grind.
1 -
I mean people pay 20 bucks for this game if not on sale, if they have to grind 500-1000 hours just to start unlocking all the non dlc characters, then that's just demotivating.
So if the game were f2p, everyone would call it a cliche move, but don't you agree that some aspects of this game feels like it were to be f2p? Like don't say this game doesn't have alot of similarities with like any free game like: Warframe, trove, path of exile, runescape.. "Want to progress faster? BUY THIS STUFF FOR REAL MONEY! THIS GAME WAS FREE ANYWAYS!" Dead By Daylight: "Want to progress faster? Buy these characters for money so you don't have to grind shards that take you ages to get, but even then the BP grind is still inevitable! This game costs 20 bucks btw!"
Looking at it, it almost feels worse than a f2p game, because the grind is just inevitable, and unnessecary for some people if they're there to just play a build, but can't because the killer needs to get like 150 levels because they can't get the perk they want. A big part of the community agrees that the bloodweb grind is just getting worse looking at how many perks there are being added, and lots of em you don't even care about, which makes the grind almost pointless.
So this doesn't mean EVERY grindy game is free, like look at WoW, you g r i n d, and grind and grind.. that's normal it's an mmorpg and still costs money. But why do people not complain alot about the grind like in DbD? Because the grind actually feels like an accomplishment at the end. You feel like you actually gained something out of it. And it makes grinding (usually) easier and easier.
But in DbD? It's like I said, grind and grind, but lots of people don't feel like they gained something.. (This is where perk balancing is an issue, you know to "not change the meta bla bla bla", those excuses). (Let's not even start about prestige)
And the rift? I mean the battle pass. Obvious.
And the skins that cost 10 bucks per... or skins that cost the double of the character itself. Perhaps they need to add lootboxes for shards to get skin parts.. oh wait- that sounds like a typicale thing of a different type of genre of a game. Hmm.
So yes, it is technically a "them" problem, but it's a bit stupid if they paid for a game and still have to grind for ages to unlock the other half of it, not even including the licensed dlcs (Which is understandable, still they are a big part of the game, they could atleast give us free auric cells in the rift for alot of grind that can make it worth it, but instead we get a few cosmetics, which is cool, but a bit disappointing, I'd rather have auric cells instead of some of those skins..)

I’ve bought all chapters but I can say especially for killer some are nessacary to win as killer and locked behind a paywall (Myers and bubba).
this games monetisation is trash
9 -
Sure you don't have buy DLC, sure you can grind for 20 hours to get enough shards for ONE non-licensed character, sure you don't have to buy skins, sure you don't have buy into the DBD currency, sure you don't have to purchase the battle passes...do you see where I'm going with this?
Simply saying that a consumer doesn't have to do anything, doesn't solve the problem at hand. DBD mirrors a free to play mobile game more than ever before. Just look at the choices BHVR made in 2020: instead of having a proper Halloween event with its own currency, BHVR decided to sell us a battle pass. Instead of a double blood point event during the last week of December, they decided to give us daily login bonuses for the month of December. Which sounds nice on paper, until you realize that an entire week's worth of login bonuses can be gained by simply playing one Killer match.
And bear in mind, this is all attached to a game that you have to purchase money for. The Silent Hill dead by daylight edition alone is $50. Imagine spending that much money and then finding all of these free to play mechanics in a game you just purchased full price for.
If none of this puts you off then more power to you, but most of the DBD community doesn't feel that way.

Senselessly whining? Criticism to you is whining? In what way is this post ‘whiny’? You think deleting accounts is a better idea? It is good to criticize a game and discuss how it can be improved than deleting accounts and not saying anything.
6 -
I agree with @stargazer9 right here.
Criticism ≠ whining
We need more people criticizing BHVR for their bussiness practices
8 -
Oh i dont care about adding any input. I didnt even read your long winded reply. I just wanted to suggest done play, theres tons of other games to play, if you dont like this ones set up, then dont play it. Show them that way.

If you don’t care then why did you click on this post, why did you read it, why did you feel the need to add your pointless comment? If you’re going to be rude and not bother reading other people’s replies, replies that actually contribute to the discussion because maybe you find reading too difficult then don’t bother at all. If you disagree with my post then say why. If you disagree but don’t have any reasons then simply don’t say anything. Move along. Go play a game or something. You’re clearly just one of those people who will respond with “then don’t play” in every post that criticizes the game and to every person that expresses a different opinion from you.

20 hours of playtime is not even halfway to 9000 shards, accounting for queue times it takes about triple that, significantly longer if you like playing survivor.
4 -
I've felt this way ever since they introduced battle passes. That ######### doesn't belong in paid games, they already have cosmetics and paid DLC. That's not even getting into the fact that challenges cause you and others to play in ways that detract from the overall experience.
5 -
This might be a semi-unpopular opinion, but I think DbD would do great as a F2P game. With all the paid DLC, grindy nature, and battlepass, the experience would be largely the same except without the upfront game cost.
Who know, maybe if it was free, the userbase would moderately increase (amount of hackers unfortunately would increase too though)
2 -
I actually love the pass and challenges. That's why I still play. Some of the challenges do need looked at, though.
1 -
I get this is meant to keep the money rolling in to support the game but in my honest view I'd prefer development go into more meaningful content and less into cosmetics but I get that's where the money is.
- I hate the battlepass - Unless you spend a lot of money on it or play for like 4-5 hours a day on it each day you'll never finish the battlepass legitimately unless you resort to either farming or prioritizing your challenge during the trial and then just suiciding on hook as survivor or afk'ing as killer to save time. The battlepass overall encourages toxic activity in game with how the challenges are set up.
- The DLC's thing is natural with a game that's supported this long but I can't say most of the DLC's are worth getting anymore.
- The grind is stupid and if they expect me to keep paying each chapter make it worth my time. I don't want to have to re-grind hundreds of hours on a new killer just to stay competitive on that killer. Survivors this doesn't really matter too much but as killer each new chapter means I'm starting at a disadvantage again unless I just grind BP to unlock stuff on them. Why does it matter if I grind at that point? I have the knowledge and experience to pick and choose what I want I shouldn't have to start over each time I get a new killer.
- Most of the cosmetics honestly aren't worth the money tbh at least for survivor.
- I personally hate the timed REDEEM A CODE system BHVR has been doing - Frosty Eyes used to be given out for free for example. Why the hell is it required to use a code now? I am honestly starting to hate this game I haven't bought the last two DLC's because of how much this annoys me. Quit trying to force me to sign into the game to get free stuff. Yeah it's nice that it's free but why is it artificially limited to what like a few days? I didn't even get the Cheryl Sweater because I was busy those days and I can't even buy it. Remember when Bill got a Christmas Sweater? Yeah I do. We were just given it without the need for a code. Remember when we had to enter a code for the original Xmas / HWeen eyes? Yeah I don't because there was no point because it wasn't a thing. The items were just added to everyone's account Honestly a mood killer when the holiday cheer is locked behind codes that have a super short expiration date and yeah I'm just going to say it. It takes away from the holiday cheer. Also my counter argument to anyone saying BHVR could have just charged for these. Maybe they should have so people could actually get them. The Dwight, Ace, Clown and other cosmetics are still available. I'm not going to be able to get what I missed out on for example and no one else will either.
Also unrelated but at this point I've already posted this wall - Never got the 4th Year Anniversary Hat for Deathslinger even though I signed in during those days - I hate this artificial limitation of cosmetics, I hate the redeem a code system and I hate how BHVR thinks I have all the time in the world to play this game
If it wasn't for all this stuff I'd probably be enjoying the game 10x more than I am now. Battlepass is ruining games and if anyone can't recognize it they don't play enough.
tl;dr - BHVR adds features that annoys me, I play less because I am annoyed, I have less incentive to spend money on said game out of spite and because I am annoyed and spending my time on other games that don't have such a frustrating system

Even if it didn’t what is wrong with making a post that discusses these things? Why keep quiet? Or do you think the forum should only be filled with posts praising the devs and the game? This is what I think of the game and it seems a lot of people feel the same. Whether or not my criticism or anyone else’s will produce results is really up to the devs.

Look I'll be the first to say yes BHVR doesn't get enough praise for what they do right. However it would be a disservice to the game to just let the other stuff go under the radar.
However here's some positive comments
- The reworks for Freddy, Leatherface, Doctor have all been amazing.
- The map reworks for the most part have been great however BHVR does need to figure out what they want to do with breakable walls.
- End Game Collapse was one of the best additions this game has had in years and we need more dramatic changes like that
There, there's some positive comments.
Also I get your point but I don't feel that should apply to this thread. I know exactly what examples you speak of and I mean everyone has their strong biases on this forum even you and I. But let's not dismiss something because a bad reputation on the forum just because a lot of people like to voice their opinion.
imo the OP is more than reasonable criticism but of course I'm a biased bitter person who agrees with it so who knows.
Also regarding FOMO - It wouldn't be such a big issue if BHVR wasn't blatantly designing features around it to get those daily sign ins.

I would give valid input if i saw something worth responding to. But this thread is just exaggerated accusations from one of the most off putting communities. Yes your entitled to your opinion but people like yourself make these posts in a hard stance and refuse to discuss, people create these threads in an attempt to create an wcho chamber or circle jerk of their opinions, bit leaving no room for those opinions to change. I stand by my original statment of "Play something else" because if this game has you so ass-agitated, then go play something else , vote with your player count. Posting here achieves nothing.

MmmI don't think the absolute deluge of script kiddies that would flood the game if it went free to play would be worth it.

Keep in mind this is becoming the standard nowadays. Look at Call of Duty or Gears of War just for example. $60 games that have battle passes, weapon skins, character skins, lootboxes, absurd xp grinding systems, etc. Unfortunately these things are no longer unique to free-to-play games.
3 -
I hope DBD will never be free to play. As much as it would make sense given their business model, the cost of time and effort to develop a new account in the off chance a hacker gets actually banned, is the only thing keeping this game from being completely obliterated by hackers.

DbD’s battle pass system is one of the worst I’ve ever seen. The pop up notification you mention is indeed scummy. I also hate that the battle pass has so many empty spots, why not give us bloodpoints or shards? Also, why can’t we accept more than one challenges instead of having to accept and complete only one challenge at a time? The battle pass system and the challenges need rework. The bloodweb needs rework too if they don’t want to lose new players.
I agree that the latest DLC was a disaster, both very unfinished and full of bugs. A complete joke.

I don’t know what Gears of War is but CoD’s battle pass system is so much better than DbD’s. It’s not just filled with cosmetics, it also give you XP tokens and CoD Points. Also, the amount of quality content they release doesn’t compare. DbD is barebones with only one game mode, an awful battle pass and DLCs that are rushed and buggy.

At least let us accept a killer AND a survivor challenge.
The amount of times i forgot to change challenges when switching roles is ridiculous.
Such a simple QoL change and they weren't able to include this after 5 battlepasses
