Increase in VPN Killers
Has anyone else noticed this? I’m averaging about 8-9 of these a day.
Is it due to the lack of people playing killer in the game, or could it be some other reason?

Out of interest how can you differentiate someone who is on a VPN from someone who just has a bad internet connection?

Server sided hit validation is on, so VPN killers or even killers with bad connection shouldn’t have such a great advantage anymore.
But there could of course be server issues that still cause unfair hits or just a hiccup on one side -either Surv or killer.

The first sign is usually their Steam name doesn’t have characters that fit English.
The second is by checking their profile like everyone else does.

With the long queue times, I'm seeing that eventually the lobby will go to a killer that is in a totally different region, which is unexpected so it might seem like lag-switching but it is region-switching on the server (I think).

The thing is though how big is the playerbase of this game in Russia? Is it enough to warrant dedicated servers specifically for that region? Genuine question, perhaps running these servers is cheaper than I'm thinking and they should be a separate region.
However I don't think it is uncommon in online games for Russia to be grouped into EU, most of the people who live in Russia actually live in the very far South West, so it's not actually far from EU at all, especially in terms of internet infrastructure.
But I recently I have seen quite a few names featuring russian (cyrilic) characters, or seen players post russian messages in the post game chat. However it's literally always survivors though (I mainly play Killer, and when I play Survivor I guess there's still 3 other players who are survivors so I'm more likely to observe variety in the survivors.
But if it's Russian people playing as survivors, I don't think this is a case of VPN exploits for an advantage, or at least it's not "VPN Killers" I've been observing.

BHVR already commented that Russian servers are not possible. I think that was in one of the Q&A streams.
also I think this is because they are using servers that are just not present in Russia.
i have to say I do get matched with many Russians but only several felt like they were abusing high ping (if VPN or they had bad connection i can’t say). And that was mainly before Server sided Hit validation. Many of them are playing fairly normal like everyone else. Obviously.

Yeah I thought so. Even a massive game like Hearthstone groups Russia into EU. To get an idea of just how small Russia is in comparison to EU, you can check all the regions considered "EU" for a massive game like Hearthstone: https://hearthstone.gamepedia.com/Region#Europe_2 (hint, it also contains Africa lol)
So yeah I don't think seeing someone with Cyrillic characters necessarily means they are abusing a VPN in order to kill you.
