Why is Autohaven so dark?

It’s the only map variant in the game where I want to AFK. Both as killer and survivor. It actually hurts my eyes to play on those maps as everything is so dark. I feel like I’m having to squint to see. I just don’t get why it’s so dark? MacMillan is nothing like this.

The Map is not dark at all.

    Let me show you something:

First picture is default Lightning, second picture is the brightest moonlight. This was the brightness when DBD was a game which was actually dark (it is bright today compared to that) and when Moonlight Offerings still were a thing. (https://deadbydaylight.fandom.com/wiki/Moonlight )

So really, calling Maps dark nowadays is a Joke. They are brighter than what was considered "brightest moonlight" a few years ago.

Post a screenshot; because it's fairly bright on my screen.

This is what it looks like on my screen (mas settings, no gama/brightness adjustments) I can see just fine:

Thats a big step up from the old version of the map that was like:

I mean I agree it's still too green, but it's less "green" than it used to be. There used to be a super thick green haze over literally everything all the time before, they got rid of that so now it's just the sky and the minimal fog.

I mean just look at it: https://youtu.be/F_YfDvo_Oy0?t=277

@Echorion To add to your edit, the old version of the map wasn’t dark, like, at all for me lol. But this new one is horrendous on console.

People saying something doesn't exactly make it true, people complain about every map being too bright or too dark all the time even when they are not; so it's hard to take stock without seeing something.

The old map was dark, much darker than the current one.

However it sounds like autohaven has some kind of lighting bug on console then because it's generally much brighter right now than it ever was. Literally everything people complained about above has been toned down over what the map used to be; so it sounds like console has some kind of rendering bug then.

That doesn't quite explain why it only affects that map though, unless they did something weird to like....only the console version of that map for some reason.

Edit: well I am watching two capture card recorded gameplay videos on PS4 of the new Autohaven and it looks fine from what I see. So idk what else to say sorry. Good luck at resolving this though, wish you luck.

Are you on PS4 yourself though? Because it’s definitely not fine how it is lol. The old Autohaven wasn’t dark, at all. It was literally a daytime map, so how can that be darker than a nighttime map? It makes no sense. As I said, I’ve had no issues with any of the maps until they added the ‘updated’ Autohaven. They’re virtually unplayable for me.

@vector below has just linked his thread. So you can also see there, other people are experiencing the issue. If you’re on PC. You’re probably unaffected. I’m not exaggerating. The maps are HORRENDOUS to play for me and they need to be fixed. It’s not fair that it’s only console players that are suffering.

  • Oh man I thought I was the only one that noticed this. I don't know what they did but it looks ugly and has some serious black-crush. None of the other realms suffer from this so it seems more like a design choice than a bug. Not only is it dark but since the blacks are crushed you lose a lot of detail in dark areas of the map.

    KiwiCoattails Member Posts: 566

Are you also console? Whenever I play as a character in dark clothing, I actually cannot see myself in some parts of the map. I completely disappear lol. It’s bad as both killer and survivor, but killer is definitely worse because of the FPV. I just mentally give up before the match begins if I see an offering for those maps.

I like it tbh, dark GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN Autohaven and the eerie atmosphere of it. Really fits DBD.

Are you also console? As the people that seem to be unaffected by the issues are on PC. I loved when the map was disabled recently. I hate that it’s now back. 😂

I have the game on PC and the first thing I noticed about autohaven was how dark the makeover was. It's dark man.

Edit: just saw your earlier post. Thats EARLY DBD, autohaven was way brighter in 2019/2020. Perhaps it's an artistic choice to go back to how autohaven used to be initially.

When I next get the map, I’ll take a picture of my TV to show people just how dark and muddy the quality is and once again, the problem isn’t with my TV.

I'm on PS4 and the map is sooooo dark. I think the overblown green tint (seriously, I wanted Autohaven to keep its greenness, but this is just too much) makes it worse because it kills contrast.

  • I took 2 screenshots from Tru3 videos because he's the only streamer I know for sure doesn't use a filter to adjust anything. So here are 2 screengrabs of unaltered gameplay footage, one is from November 2020 just before the rework, the other Jan 2021.

That's how the games looked on my PC too. Autohaven was bright with a bit of a washed out look, now everything is dark and all the colours and contrast are crushed together. It looks pretty bad to be honest.

Seriously though, it really hurts my eyes and my desire to play the match completely plummets when I load into Autohaven.

    It is way too dark.

When I play killer on some of the maps now I literally cannot see survivor movement. Survivors know this and actually hide in what would otherwise be plain sight on some maps. I know because I see other survivors do this when I play survivor.

They're so dark I literally got trapped in the basement while playing killer because I couldn't tell where the stairs leading out were. I had to keep moving my camera around until I could spot the tiny pinprick of light emanating from the stairs. The person on the hook probably thought I was camping at first and then after a while of watching me walking into a wall probably thought I was brand new to video games lol

    Yeah,i agree.

The lightning of this map is really weird in a way that it makes it hard to spot things and keep track of them.

It was waaaay better before the rework

I play on console, but Xbox, & have no real issues with the lighting. Now the old meat plant downstairs, that was dark, especially if facing blendettes. I would just swing, & hope for the best.

Autohaven is lit like a Christmas tree.

We clearly aren't playing the same game.

The only map left in the game that has anything remotely resembling "dark" is Hawkin's, and only in some parts of it.

  • Shirokinukatsukami
    Shirokinukatsukami Member Posts: 1,624

Then that's a problem with your TV.

Autohaven is super bright and I don't play with filters or any of that nonsense and I don't lower graphics details.

This is what Autohaven looks like for me, used a key to get there just to take this screenshot.

If you were playing this game 3 years ago you'd probably have a heartw attack

    Shirokinukatsukami Member Posts: 1,624

This really. I mean people still complaining about dark maps in 2021, lol. Let's ask BHVR to change all their tilesets to white and put sunlamps on every corner, maybe that'll learn ya.

I'm on Xbox One. The graphically updated Autohaven maps, in my experience, are really dark and green-tinted. I don't really dig it - the green tint to a certain extent is fine, but not what it is now

@Shirokinukatsukami Bright? that picture is extremely dark on my PC monitor. It's the black crush that is horrible, if you're looking at the bottom of that hill then yeah it's bright but look at the area left of the hill or Cheryl's skirt, you can barely make out any detail because it's all crushed. It's like playing on an early gen LCD TV.

edit: Interesting. I clicked on it and the blacks turn to a light grey at full size. The full size image isn't too bad but the preview looks darkened.

Your photo is 1920 x 1080, is that your resolution you use for DBD? me too, but the thumbnail image with the crushed blacks is what the game looks like for me.

Do your TVs and monitors not come with "brightness" settings anymore?

I am at 20 brightness on my monitor it is bright as heck. Not even using 100 brightness.

Turn up your brightness if it is too dark. But seriously it isn't.

I don't know what to say other than please don't ask the Devs to keep brightening the maps any further. I do not want a sea of white in my DBD.

EDIT lol okay that's weird. Dunno why it looks dark when smaller and brighter when clicked, but like Aven Fallen said teh game is way too bright these days.

  • My brightness is fine for every other game and other map, it's just autohaven. Shouldn't have to fiddle with brightness everytime you load in on autohaven.

I feel like the devs have messed up the RGB settings on this map somehow

  • Shirokinukatsukami
    Shirokinukatsukami Member Posts: 1,624

Well hopefully they fix it in a patch by remedying the RGB balance. The map does not need to be any brighter it s already way too bright. Not as bright as MacMillan, which used to be the darkest map in the game but now is the brightest map in the game, but I seriously don't want any more maps to get brighter than they already are.

This game is Dead by Daylight, not Dead in the Daylight.

I don't know about too dark but there's something really weird going on with the lighting in the game for me. They're the only maps where somebody can run around a corner mid chase and they completely vanish, it's really weird and jarring sometimes.

  • kylerabdcgamer10
    kylerabdcgamer10 Member Posts: 279

Yeah, I'm really sick of literally all the maps becoming brighter then the sun. Now shadows in most maps are completely grey and don't look like a proper "shadow" anymore, the lighting in this game just needs a complete rework at this point honestly, or just add a brightness setting that recommends you brightness options like literally every game nowadays, and starts at the current high brightness. I'd like this so I could make my game super dark so it could actually feel like a horror game.

  • KiwiCoattails
    KiwiCoattails Member Posts: 566

    You’re so ignorant.

Just because you’re not experiencing any issues with the maps, doesn’t mean there isn’t an issue. On console, the Autohaven maps are too dark. It’s not stylistically dark either, it’s bugged. Midwich is a dark map, but it renders perfectly fine on console. It’s dark, but not to the point it gives me a headache from playing. If you think me actually struggling to see where my character is and totems and pallets practically becoming invisible was an intentional game design, well, I don’t know what to say to ya lol.

The problem also isn’t with my TV. I have a brand new 4K TV. Blu rays look absolutely stunning. The Last of Us Part II, visually, is one of the best games I’ve ever played. Shadow detail was phenomenal. Every other map on DBD renders completely fine for me. But yeah, the Autohaven not rendering right is a fault with my TV.

There’s nothing wrong with my settings either. Like I said, everything else plays and looks how it was INTENDED to look.

The fact some of you are claiming this map is lit up like a Christmas tree just proves to me that you’re not experiencing the same issue. Because it’s currently lit up by a candle for me.

So stop making out like we’re being cry babies. You don’t have a bugged map? Well that’s great. But a lot of us do and we want it fixed.

Why is that making so many of you so passive aggressive?

  • savevatznick
    savevatznick Member Posts: 651

I think it is less a "light and dark" and more a contrast problem. The devs seem to make the darks SUPER DARK and the lights SUPER LIGHT, so a blendette is basically a black hole in a human silhouette, but a neon feng is visible from 100 meters away - oh wait, we don't render that far.

This isn't even considering the balance implications of camouflage. Do you think they balance their cosmetics around their camouflage value? Do you think camouflage should even BE a balancing point?

  • KiwiCoattails
    KiwiCoattails Member Posts: 566

In that photo, the map looks great. The problem is, that’s not how it renders for me on console. If I play the map today and I assume I will. I’ll take a photo of my screen so you can see how it displays for me. And like I’ve said multiple times, the problem isn’t with my TV.

  • Alionis
    Alionis Member Posts: 1,025

I'm just about convinced this is something entirely unrelated to the game.

Pretty much for every complaint that map x is too dark, there is someone who'll say it's either too bright or just right.

I belong to the latter: never felt that any map was too dark. Quite the opposite actually, I think all new maps are too bright and I miss the darker maps from 2016.

I don’t see how it’s unrelated to the game when they’re the only maps that are rendered poorly for me...

  • Alionis
    Alionis Member Posts: 1,025

Because, as I pointed out, for almost every "too dark" complaint, there is a "it's fine for me" or "too bright" response.

A frequent complaint I hear, for example, is that game is so dark, you can't see any survivors. Never experienced that for myself, neither did others playing the game. I'm not saying the people who do have the issue are making stuff up, but with how much the complaints and non-complaints keep balance, I think the actual issue is a 3rd party one.

  • It seems pretty unanimous. Those of us who say it's too dark have a problem ONLY with the new autohaven maps and no other maps. It seems to be a contrast or black crush issue.

I'm not quite sure what this means but clearly from the posted tweets other people find it dark too.

  • KiwiCoattails
    KiwiCoattails Member Posts: 566

There’s definitely something wrong. It’s not a case of people just whining for the sake of it. Like I said earlier in the thread, Midwich is a visually dark map and I have no complaints. Because it’s stylistically dark. The way Autohaven renders for me seems like a bug.

  • crixus006
    crixus006 Member Posts: 383

it was a pretty good job so far

  • I agree 100% There's a difference between a dark map where you can still see detail and a map where all the dark areas are so crushed you can't make out any detail at all. It looks like an early xbox 360 game in that regard, they were notorious for black crush and bad gamma.

  • Kazim

And the worst thing is that many of the games end up there and mc millan even though it is supposed to be random there are days in a row when I can't play in silent hill, laboratory, gideon, and saloon =/ for the bad random.
