Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

Old ruin vs new, what do you think of both

As a killer I miss the old ruin tbh. Not really fond of the new one on killers that can't traverse the map fast.

As a survivor old ruin was sometimes frustrating especially with old frame rate on console but other times it made the game more interesting. New one is pushover imho.

  • New Ruin somehow manages to be both inferior as a perk and yet so much worse to play against imo

Nothing like getting a gen 80% complete, being chased away and then coming back to realize its regressed to nothing and you have to hold M1 all over again. Bring back old Ruin.

The new one is a buff I think, the old one was alright but it could of been counted by "good" survivors, the new one is now all killer favoured unless you cleanse it lol.

Old Ruin was a strong early game perk. New Ruin is such an oppressive late-game perk that it got a seperate perk nerfed just because it enabled Ruin to stay up potentially for the entire length of the trial.

New Ruin is objectively stronger. Old Ruin was unhealthy for the game.

Old ruin forced me to become amazing at great skill checks.. so I guess... thanks old ruin!

Bringing back old ruin would screw over newer survivor players.

IMO Old Ruin's reliance on skillchecks for design made it too easy for one weak link among the Survivors to drag the whole team down. Dealing with bad teammates is frustrating enough without them making repairing a gen that painful.

I miss the old red skill checks. There's really no skill involved in skill checks anymore.

Old ruin was super awful for new players. I imagine the whole reason it was changed to begin with is because of that reason alone to be honest. New players are much better off not having to deal with ruin, and with doc’s ability to easily tier survivors up in madness ruin would be insane on him now.

Skill checks are based on the frame rate mainly. They are not very smooth, so even players with thoursands of hours can't hit great skill checks all the time.

I don't miss old Ruin at all and I could do without the Ruin/Tinkerer bots. Resident sleeper.

I thought that new Ruin would ruin (ahem... pun not intended) the game. My philosophy before the Ruin 'nerf' was that any killer build was 3 perks plus Ruin if you wanted to win. Turns out new Ruin is not only healthier for the game but also potentially stronger if you play well and generate pressure. And now I get to create builds with 4 entire perks!

I've rarely been as happy to be wrong as I was when new Ruin came out.

i prefer playing against old ruin as a survivor.

as a killer, new ruin is definitely superior but both are good. id hardly call the change a "nerf" it just forces you to apply gen pressure to get value.

killers who were never good at applying gen pressure prefer old ruin and vice versa.

You can't apply pressure with slower killers that efficiently.

    yeah i'm aware.

i kinda wish they would just make it so you could choose which version of ruin you want to run. old or new. then everyone could be happy. or maybe make them two separate perks (but not able to run them together cause i dunno that seems overkill)

I think the killers that relied on old ruin the most got hurt the most. I think new ruin is only really suited to killers with good map control

IMO new Ruin is stronger (in the right hands) and better designed. The Killer gets value out of it if they are good - if they suck, they dont get any value out of it. Old Ruin was just effortless Slowdown and this should not be in the game. The Killer should be responsible for the Slowdown, not some Perks (Perks like PGTW or Sloppy Butcher require the Killer to do something to keep the Slowdown going, this was not the case with old Ruin).

As Killer, I like it more, but I dont use it, since I hate to use Hex-Perk. I find them stressful, I dont want to be down to three Perks if I am unlucky and I dont want to care for 4 Survivors, Gens AND a Hex-Totem dring the game. Also it is not seen in every game, which is quite nice, I just hated it that people said that you need (old) Ruin, which was not the case.

As Survivor, I liked old Ruin more, I was able to hit Great Skill Checks 8 to 9 times out of 10, so I was not bothered that much. New Ruin is highly annoying if it is not found early and it can be quite frustrating to leave a almost finished Gen (when the Killer comes, for an Unhook, etc.) and know that it will regress, however, the Killer is actively doing something in this case, so it is ok.

Ngl I kinda miss old Ruin too. I got good at skill checks because of it, and it also made gens actually interesting. Yeah it was bad for the game, blah blah, but it was definitely more fun to go against than current ruin, which is one of the more annoying killer perks in the game next to bamboozle.

Plus it was very funny watching the baby Meg or Claudette get 5 Ruin skillchecks in a row and miss all of them, or seeing everyone immediately stop working on the gen when someone hit Ruin. The little moments like that when you weren't getting chased were the best.

As survivor, I hate them both.

As Killer, I love them both.

360s aren't even a problem for most newer players, it might work once or even twice but then they will just wait.

I agree new ruin rewards killers applying pressure. Where as old ruin just flat out slowed down the gens with no effort. My issue with new ruin is killers that have mobility are better with it. Old ruin was good on every killer. New ruin isn't as good on a M1 killer.

My biggest problem is that it isnt ruin. Its a new perk. Ruin's job was to slow down objective progress. It fit into the same category of thano. The job of the perk was to slow progress. The new perk does not do this in any meaningful capacity. New ruin rewards gen pressure and aggressive play. As you noted, old ruin was used by slow killers that needed a boost. New ruin rewards faster killers who are capable of the more aggressive play. It helps an entirely different type of killer.

Old ruin punished newer survivors who couldn't do skill checks.

New ruin punishes newer survivors who can't deal with new ruin once they reach higher ranks with better killers but it gives them the chance to reach red ranks and spread the misery.

New ruin competitively is better since old ruin was only good if survivors were bad at skill checks.

I have gotten way more use out of this ruin then old one for that reason, sure against those bad players ruin was strong but it literally did nothing when you went against survivors who could hit the skill check, it was just making good killers have an easier time with bad survivors.
