There's no reward for playing "fair"
I just had a match at red ranks as Clown where I was playing as fair as possible which means that I was hooking people and walking away to go kick some gens with Pop Goes while the rest of the team was able to unhook and heal that person.
I kept doing that several times until I had 10 out of 12 hooks, two survivors managed to escape in the end. And even after all of this hard and fair work I still was robbed of my pip. What reason do killers even have to play fair if they still don't get any rank progress out of it?

Unfortunately you do rank better if you allow unhooks and rehook survivors. Are you counting individual hooks or the hook states? Individual hooks should give you a lot while hook states are meaningless
You most likely were lacking in other areas like chases being too long or gens got done too quickly.
Killers have a much harder time pipping though which I hate

Play how you want.
Personally I play fair out of a sense of sportsmanship. I also play 50/50. So I play as I would like to face. I see so many people rage about some tactic they hate. Then turn around and do that same thing to someone else when they switch sides.
And ######### the pips. You have to decide what you play for and what is a win for you.

The reward is you being a good killer, morally.

there is a reward; knowing you played fair and maximized enjoyment for everybody in the match including yourself.
I play killer how i'd want to play against as Survivor, and that for sure isn't stacking slowdowns, slugging multiple people at once etc, cos its never fun as survivor and i can't really work out how its fun for the person playing killer either.

The reward to me is a more fun match overall

Playing like that seems unfair to you. Literally play however you want, people have went against worse than a killer who goes back to a hook.

I hate how there is this split in the community. A lot of people try to defend toxic behavior and then the other half wants to defend the morally good play. I will say, not only does playing "fairly" create higher scoring games, quicker pips, and a better experience, but it teaches you to be a better player. You learn sooo much more about how to pressure gens and outloop survs. These people defending the toxic play as "just a strategy" seem to have such a bad understanding of chasing and pressuring. Its kinda a shame that this is even a discussion we have to have, if the devs rewarded the more optimal play a bit more I feel like we'd have a better current game state. Like if hook proximity slowed down sacrifice time, or if EGC paused for like 10 seconds when someone is hooked. Idk it just feels like more can be done to encourage people to learn killer properly

@Canas Headache, annoyance and a lot of teabagging with a bit of nasty degrading chat afterwards. Its not worth being super nice unless its an event. Your job is to kill. Do you think everyone will give you 2 free hooks each if you seem to suck? Nah, they'll teabag you and hop a pallet 400 times while they laugh at you. Play how you want. The best advice is don't get tilted. Remember, its just a game. If you get tilted, you start making more and more mistakes and they WILL destroy you then.

There is, playing fair and going for 12 hooks instead of camping and tunneling gives way more BPs since you get more chases, more uses of your power, more hooks, more break pallet/gen interactions etc.
People who camp a hook even if they get 4k usually end with less than 15k while if you go for 12 hooks even if you dont kill anyone you will get 20k, usually more depending on what kind of power your Killer has.

This game is designed to make you play in a way that’s unfun for the opponents and if not then you’re more likely to lose. Imagine how popular this game could have been if they made the game to be fun for everyone

I'm more than happy to play fairly before the gens are done. All bets are off once the gates are powered.

I'm more or less the same way. While there are gens to defend, I'll do my utmost to pressure them and spread the pain.
But once they're all done, my objective is to drag as many of you to hooks as possible. And if that means I gotta toast some marshmallows at a hook to do it, so be it.

Oh no you didn't pip. The horror.
