It is the symbol for survivor. The same way the skull is the symbol for killer.

I think it's a ball made out of gears to symbolize "survivor"?

I think it's the gears for gens. I guess it's suppose to symbolise that you're good at being able to get gens done and be able to escape if you get to rank 1, and the skull means you are good at getting kills playing killer.

Nah. It is just the symbol for survivor. When you are in the main menu you can see them above "play as..."

The survivor icon reminds me of a Madball. Anyone else here old enough to remember Madballs?
...Then again I guess they did get brought back for a while. Never mind.

I know I just thought maybe because the only time you see them above ranks is at rank 1 so it myn't have some meaning behind it.

I agree. I've always thought it looked like a patchwork voodoo doll kinda face. Or like an IDV icon or something outta Binding of Isaac, I dunno. But it takes effort for me to see the gears instead of a face.

I actually didn't even see the gears until you mentioned it, so good on you. I just always read it as a cracked skull.

Well, it's the same with the Killer Rank 1 icon, that's the only one with the skull on it. I think it's just to make the rank 1 icon special.
The killer skull and the survivor gears are both shown on the main menu, though, so they are just the generic symbols for that role.
