What was your first impression of the game?
This isn't a versus post, I swear.
Basically when you first downloaded the game what was y ur first impression of it? Which side did you start with? What's your impression of the game now?
I'll start, I started playing pretty much as Ghostface came out, I was 12 at the time and only decided to play the game cuz my brother convinced me. I started with survivor and I was honestly scared that as soon as I entered the match that the killer would insta-down me.
My current impression of the game being has changed drastically, it's not scary to me now when I play survivor. Honestly, I'm more scared whenever I wanna play killer, because I'm scared matchmaking will screw me over and put me with people who are 10 ranks higher than me.

I first started playing DBD during the last Winter Solstice event, back in 2018. That menu music alone was enough to send shivers down my spine. Played a few matches as survivor before switching to killer and playing Old Freddy all day long.
If my first impression of the game could be described in one word, it would be "perfection". Because that was what made me fall in love with this game, the reason why DBD was and still is my all-time favourite.
Nowadays, things have changed a little bit. That creepy ambience we used to have is basically gone, my favourite killer is technically gone, and this list goes on. However, that doesn't mean I am not having fun, because I definitely am.

I loved it when I first started it and I still love it.
I'm a huge sucker for horror and DbD is like the Smash of horror. I find it soo cool when characters from different franchises are running along side each other.
The game has it's ups and downs but I still find it super fun.

When you're scared to play the person that's meant to scare the opposing side, shouldn't that show devs that there's a problem.

I started to play DBD in late September or early October 2020 after learning about it on TikTok, and initially started out only as a baby Meg survivor for a good while. My first impressions were actual fear due to me not knowing about a lot of the mechanics, like I remember at first I didn't even know how to point or wave. I also didn't know about scratch marks, which probably helped a lot of killers find me. I also got to enjoy the old Autohaven, MacMillan, and Ormond...which part of me misses. It quickly became my favorite game and most played game.
And it remains so to this day!!

I'm glad you still find enjoyment and hope you keep that spark, keep pushing forward my fellow player ^w^

WHY are there so many unlockable characters? I've bought most of the DLCs but for around 70% less of their base price: they're way too expensive (I can see how a license costs 10€ but how do two characters cost 10€ in a game with more than 40 unlockable characters?).

I was never really a fan of horror but this game got me interested in the older horror films. I mainly enjoyed playing survivor with friends but I’ve been playing killer more now
2 -
My first impressions of the game were very favorable. I think I started with Killer.
My impressions of the game now are definitely less favorable lol.
5 -
Yes, delve into older horror films, they may be cheesy, but are absolute classics!

I started playing about two weeks before Pyramid Head and Cheryl came out. I mostly played survivor and was pretty terrified and thought the game was pretty violent. Now, it’s violent in terms of murdering my sanity because it’s DBD.

My first impression of the game was during Summer 2017, when the game was dealing with massive issues. I was forcefully disconnected from every match mid-way through.
So basically have a near heart-attack and then follow that up with the rage of not even getting to get through the game
I uninstalled until I repurchased it on Halloween the same year. Loved it ever since.

understandable, have a good day
for real though, I think most players (that have played longer than 3 months) understand that feeling

Thank you :)!!!!!!

My first ever match was when I was playing as Billy on Swamp back in March of 2018.
My first impression was that this was a fun scary slasher game; and that being able to play as the killer was just so gosh-dang cool.
Boy was I wrong.

My first impressions were, it's cool but the maps seemed boring not to mention all killers did was put you on a hook and died that way.
It was no Friday the 13th. Curse that rights dispute for killing it too quickly.
Later on I felt the maps got more interesting. I don't like the loop running idea of the game. I much prefer hiding but the game doesn't let you do that. I understand why don't get me wrong it would drag games out too damn long and the game isn't built like that so I accept it. Those other games are structured in the fact that if you were caught you were dead. not if you're caught you have to be downed and then carried to a hook placed at random spots throughout the map.
Now I think the game can be fun but it feels like it could use a little more variety in many areas. too many to name.

I booted up Aug 2018, after being asked "What do you think about DbD?" It struck me as:
- Hardcore
- Difficult to learn
- Fun
- Amazing atmosphere and audio
I had no idea the maps had any random elements, so I assumed everybody just knew where the gens were, and that I'd learn those eventually.
After a weekend, I came back and said, "Yes, I like it. Why?" "How would you like to work on it?"
11 -
That's actually a really cool take, I find it interesting to learn how devs who were introduced to the dev team joined. Same things with those who moderate the forums, thanks for giving the time to answer the question ^^

My 13 year old son asked me to download it and play just after slinger came out. First match was fred...... remember telling him survivor is boring after few games he ran back to Fortnite (he assumed I switched back to madden) but I switched to killer actually and been killing every since. I wouldn't say killer is scary but I can say maybe antsy a bit when I search in lobby same feeling I got when running onto the field in high school FB. Survivor nothing feels free should be opposite. Soon as I get my first hit it goes away though idk maybe it feed my bloodlust or some #########. This is really the only game I play now there things I don't like, things devs change/don't change I disagree with (TWINS), but I still love the game.
#Free the VICTOR.

Well, that is what it should be.

I started when the game first came out, and my first impression was that the game wasn't all that good, but had potential. So I stuck with it.
2 -
Oh boy, I have a story for you now.
Okay so. I got introduced to Dead By Daylight on the 21st of October 2020. In the beginning, I just wanted to test it out, play some games. I had so much fun, I love the atmosphere, the audio and the visuals, but then I saw HillBilly and I was terrified. I still haven't forgotten how he just magically appeared behind me with his loud chainsaw. And after that experience, I thought it was so unfair, that the killer had the biggest advantage ever. I used to think that because I was bad at looping, I guess I wanted powers/abilities as a survivor.
I never had a problem learning how the game worked, so I never found Dead By Daylight hard. Well, except whenever I faced a Doctor. I hated that guy, and I still do. But back then, I hated him because he was ugly, that he could find survivors without a problem, and I had no idea why I couldn't vault or drop pallets when I got shocked by him. But now, I can at least survive a while against him(If I find a loop of course).
I only played survivor when I started, I never touched killer for months. But after seeing a streamer called Rayoxium playing The Nurse, I was like: "I have to play her". She looked so fun to play as, and she definitely was. The Nurse was the only one I played for a couple of weeks, and I learned how to use her blinks very quickly. Of course, I wasn't good with her, but I didn't have it too difficult.
>>>Conclution!!!<<<
I loved the game, but my baby brain thought killers had a big advantage and that made me triggered.

And also, when I started to play, I couldn't play without Spine Chill. And after watching one of Otz videos about survivors, I immediately knew I was going to main Kate. Because she was the quietest of the shorter survivors.

I played only survivor for quite a long time. I didn't fully understand the perks and the sprint burst. I was pretty annoyed at the beginning. Was quite scared and almost never went for unhooks.
0 -
Well, that was quick. You know, it took me a VERY long time to decide which survivor I was going to main.
It was weird, actually. Played my first few matches with Claudette, then played a little bit of Dwight, then Quentin, then Tapp, then Laurie, then back to Claudette. And this lasted for months, until I settled with Claudette... But nowadays I've changed back to Quentin :)
I don't know why I've made such a mess with survivors, because the same didn't happen with killer. I started with Freddy, and he still is my main.

For me, as survivor I've been playing Feng Min since I first started playing because her technician perk. Now I play her because I really like her overall design, she actually became my comfort character for this game. When Cheryl was brought to the game, I knew I had to have her and the Silent Hill DLC was the first DLC I every bought as soon as it came out. So now I will swap between the two ^^

I first played when it was first released for console. I was so excited and watched tons of videos on it. It lived up to the hype for me. I was always scared and used to hide in lockers a lot. I remember me and my dude blowing the same gen 8 times, thats when you could get a skill check that was almost impossible to hit. In a span of 10 seconds, we managed to blow the gen 8 times in a row then we said ######### that gen together as if it was the gens' fault lol. Fond memories.

I started playing way back in June 2016 and I have to say I found it really scary. I'd seen a couple of youtube games of it, and those were so atmospheric I had to try it. So I started off playing Survivor and my first game, I was absolutely terrified of the killer and didn't even know how to hit skill checks and stuff like that - forget looking behind myself in a chase! I loved the style of the game though, the whole Cat vs Mouse - and I still do.
It was a lot different back then though, it was safer as survivor because you had infinites and you quickly learned to run them as a survivor.
It was a while before I played Killer because honestly, back in those days killer play was the much harder side and you could see that there was so much to learn about the maps, the powers etc. But I'm glad I did start playing both sides, as it's definitely improved my understanding of the game (if not my gameplay). I will always love the chases!
3 -
I started playing back in 2016 when it released and I was a terrified little Dwight hiding in the edge of the map or in a locker every time I hear the terror radius, immediately dropping every pallet I come to in a chase. Eventually I evolved into a terrified Jake doing the same things as before except always sabotaging hooks and never repairing gens
I don't remember at what point I started figuring out how to really play the game, but I guess I figured it out sooner or later. I also played killer once I quit being scared of being a survivor but by then I kinda understood how the game worked enough to not do everything wrong

my first impression was: wow! great to help each other escape! great that if you don't play helping your teammates you can't win! then I discovered that 2 out of 5 games are toxic! but i'm still in love with the game and its wonderful atmosphere that i still shake!

I love MEG THOMAS❤️

I joined back im February 2018, when the Saw chapter was most recent, i suppose the licenses and cool original characters were what intrigued me to play the game.

My first impression of the game was that it was going to be scary and/or exciting. I started with Killer (Did horribly, Btw).
My impression of the game now is way different, I don't find the game as exciting anymore. That scary feeling I had when I first started playing this game has completely vanished.

I had watched some Let’s plays of Friday the 13th by a YouTuber during college/learning times as short pauses while learning and enjoyed the asymmetrical horror gameplay. They also played DbD but… I thought it was dumb to be honest. Didn’t like the graphics and aesthetics at all and thought every killer is just the same with the hooks XD
later on I noticed the YouTuber themselves liked DbD way more and thus I gave it another chance and it quickly grew on me. Way later I didn’t care for Friday 13th but stuck with DbD and when I could afford a gaming PC it was the game I bought.
I played Claudette because I really liked her design the most out of the starters. I knew about most mechanics, couldn’t hit skillchecks or run the killer though (well at least I got better at skillchecks nowadays..), the moment I remember best from the very beginning though was when I opened an exit gate and could run out but the only other survivor left alive was just hooked. My partner watched and urged me just escape. In the end I managed to unhook the surv and we both got out! It was so exciting and I think that got my partner also more interested in the game. Shortly after we started playing together and still do!

When I got the game in 2016, I already had knowledge of it for 6 months. I knew about looping and stuff. I was 8 at that time, turned 9 a day later. I wasn't speaking English at all, I am not native. Gotta say that all I knew about looping, not wasting pallets and stuff... 0 effect. I was still so scared I couldn't even dare wait at a pallet. Soon enough I learnt how to look back, my English got better (thanks to school for grammar and games for vocabulary) and I also got good at killer.
Impressions? Fun and scary.

Then:
- Fun
- Scary
- Good atmosphere
- Unique
- Unbalanced as hell
Now:
- Fun
- Still unbalanced as hell
- Unique

My first ever impression of DBD was that this game was a tell tale series, where a group of survivors are trying to survive terrifying horror icons, no joke I actually thought this was a campaign series. When I actually looked up gameplay of it I was met with what was instead A multiplayer game.
I actually got the game during when Oni came out and I played clown as my first ever killer. Didn't go so well.

If you don't mind me questioning this - I can see that you changed your opinion on the atmosphere, could you expand on that a little more if you wouldn't mind? I'd be very interested to read your opinion on that.
1 -
I personally think the same. The athmosphere was better before due to the fog. Yes, this is what you need to add back, the fog. It was the truly scary part of the game. Also, when the game launched, the hit animations and sounds looked and sounded far more realistic.
2 -
Pardon the intrusion, but if I may share my opinion on the matter I completely agree with @Yords and @Pukenplag. The atmosphere / ambience was much better in the past, prior to the Realm Beyond. Of course, bringing the Fog back would help, but I don't think it is enough.
An example which shows it pretty well is Disturbed Ward. If we take its original version:
We can see how everything looked like. Just by seeing the Fog, the general style of the map... everything looked creepy. You know this isn't natural, you know this mysterious Entity transformed this place into hunting grounds. It looks scary, it looks good.
And if we take its current version, it looks like... an empty wasteland? It doesn't feel right to me. And I believe this exact same idea applies to most, if not all, reworked maps.

Before I got DBD I had heard here and there that it was OK but nothing amazing.
When I got it, I did the tutorial and was like... Ok this seems alright. Then I got instantly sucked into a Kill your Friends... and... my reaction was essentially "Wait, there's perks and items and you can put together different builds? How did I not know this? This is gonna be great! OH GOD WHY ARE THERE SO MANY? Later this is going to be great but right now, OH GOD WHAT DO I PICK?" So... essentially a mix of excitement and being very very overwhelmed. I am happy to say the feeling of being overwhelmed has left completely.

First time I played was a free weekend in like 2017 but it was interesting when I first played I thought it was a Friday the 13th copy for some reason guess I'm stupid

Nope, I don't mind at all. I agree with GeneraIV, the older versions of the maps might have had less depth in graphics, but they had atmosphere. Macmillian and its blue tint as a unique feature coupled with everything else just FIT correctly. It all just fitted perfectly together. Now, we still have them, but they have lost their charm, I made a post about it but I mentioned that the maps feel so lifeless. Link to that here:
https://forum.deadbydaylight.com/en/discussion/244299/the-maps-feel-so-lifeless#latest
Just look at the picture GeneralV posted, compare that image of the crotus penn asylum to the current one. The original is gorgeous, a beautiful place to be murdered at lol. But when you look at the new one, it does objectively look better in terms of graphics, but at the same time it somehow lacks detail (it's hard to explain).
The fog looks weird now as well, the moonlight cannot be changed anymore (I loved using the offerings that messed with it), and it looks cheesy.
What do I think the main problems are? Lack of color, lack of ambience, improper lighting, lack of vegetation, and lack of weather. All the trees look the same, all the grass is a little funky, and the. Look at current autohaven for example, it has the structures done good for the most part, but at the same time they seem out of place somehow because everything else is bland. There isn't really any wind blowing, the little vegetation it has just stays frozen, the clouds in the sky are just there and don't really move, and the lighting just doesn't suit it as it used to since it changed.
I personally think that it is mainly the structures are a big reason everything looks off. The buildings got some changes and do look better, but it's like the main structures (not tiles) of the map got a big upgrade and everything else got shafted.
And I don't mean to come off as rude or having super high expectations of BHVR, but I just miss the old feeling of the maps and would like them back. I also don't mean to sound like a know-it-all either. I mean this is just my opinion and I am not an artist, just someone who enjoys it (this game), I don't know what should and shouldn't be added to the graphics of the game.
So to summarize, the old maps were ALIVE, as they should be considering the super basic lore of the game. The entity creates a real (map) that is literally the exact same as the normal world, your home, but it isn't. The new maps, while they aren't necessarily bad, seem to have failed to give us that feeling. Not to mention it is hard to even enjoy the new graphics with poor optimization, which again thanks for looking into Mandy to see if there is any news on optimization.
So yeah, the old maps fit all together, they all were balanced in terms of everything said above, they had their own little details here and there. The new maps.. not really, they feel almost fake.
3 -
FWIW, I don't really like the look of the new maps, either -- I get the same empty wasteland vibes.
To the original question: I started playing around the time Plague came out. Survivor was too stressful for me, so I played killer. The image I had of the game going in was that it was mostly a stealth game, where the survivors would sneak around and try to avoid being detected because, once they were detected, the killer was so powerful that they were as good as dead.
Once I played more, I started to understand that a) killer is way more stressful (at least for me), b) the game rarely involves true stealth, and c) there is a lot of confrontation, and a lot of aggression from the survivor side -- meaning, it's possible for survivors to use their abilities offensively in a way that I didn't really anticipate from hearing the game described.
2 -
Well said, my friend, well said. And I agree completely.
1 -
150% agree. I miss the ambiance of the old maps so much. It just feels like something is missing in all these map updates.
2 -
Whenever I think about the old game, one thing that comes into my mind is that the ambient was dark, but buildings were generating light. This actually caused an interesting effect, because the darkness, combined with the fog, caused a horror feel. However, contrary to new Autoheaven, you could still see your surroundings due to the builidngs being in contrast with the general lighting. Also, the moon paid a very important role. It shined very bright and you could see it from anywhere. Nowdays, without fog, the horror aspect is ruined. This is due to the fact that fog obstructed your vision, and this sure helps. It is way creepier when you can't see past a certain point, rather than not seeing anything (*caugh* Autoheaven *caugh*)
1 -
I have a very different experience to most. I've been watching DbD content ever since the game came out in 2016, so I guess I have two first impressions. When I first saw the game I thought "wow, how would the killers ever lose? How would SWF ever help, all those people talking is such a huge nerf!"
Then I actually started playing a bit before Ghostface came out and my impression was that everyone else sucked because I was always the only one doing gens and also Spirit was really fun but really weak.
