Spirit Haters

So, how many of us actually play Spirit? I kind of do on very rare occasions when I want to play a killer I find kind of difficult because of all of my self-nerfs (no Stridor, no 50/50's, no standing still, etc) but still very strong. I'd probably like playing her a lot more if not for how just... Spirit-y she is.

How many others use her? Do you have any self-banned perks or add-ons, or do you just play normally whilst silently wishing she wasn't so miserable for your opponents? Do you go out of your way to be nice, or do you just play her as your guilty pleasure?

I like putting on trash perks on her. It's fun getting to use dumb ######### but I still feel bad because there's nothing they can do in the 1v1.

I feel like her passive phasing add-ons are a pretty nice extra to throw on and play M1 Spirit with

Before Undying was changed I had a fun Hex build (Haunted Grounds, Devour Hope, TOTH, Retribution) but I couldn't resist swapping Retribution for Undying and now I hate myself.

    I don't have her.

She is, pointedly, the very last killer I plan on obtaining.

I will literally purchase the Twins and Trickster over her on principle until Spirit has to play DbD too.

I don't play her anymore. I choose not to. It used to be fun while she was still relatively new, but quickly learned that it's not that fun anymore (and for the other side too).

Doesn't feel rewarding compared to a well-timed hatchet or predicted nurse blink.

Oof! This thread will get heated pretty fast, I reckon.

Anyway, I don't really hate her. I think she has a very nice design aesthetically, with a fundamentally flawed power that BHVR won't address because of their usual sunk-cost fallacy.

Remember when they said the new hud was going through because of 'months of work'? Same with Spirit's status. They spent 30k on her development. So, I figure she's pretty much untouchable at this point.

I only play as her for dailies with a machine gun build: stbfl, unrelenting, corrupt and bbq. I go for jumpscare hits.

The standstill mInDgAmE? I honestly do it, because in reality it's not a 50/50. I mean, it's a coin flip for the survivor to guess if a phase is happening or not. But the thing is, it's irrelevant if they guess right or not. Even if they guess correctly that you're phasing, you just track them. It's really that simple. When the bug caused the phasing sound in terror radius, you could play just fine, exactly for that reason.

Other than that, I'm really not interested. Spirit is a tracking killer with a guaranteed hit. People who talk about prediction are playing incorrectly, that's when they find her hard. The only real 50/50s are at god pallets/windows, which just take a few more seconds to be dealt with. Heck, they even shadow buffed her recently when they made grunts from slow vaulting louder (you could already hear them during phasing).

P.S. forgot about passive phasing. Why is that even a thing,? Or, rather, I should say passive mINDgAmINg. She's the qUeeN oF mINDgAmINg, after all.

I hate spirit so much that I let her kill me and move on to the next match. It’s just not fun sorry

Honestly completely agree with this. I've played this game for something around 3200 now and if one of my high hour friends picks her up unironically I kinda lose some respect for them since they knowingly pick something that makes others feel miserable.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

I've never heard someone call Spirit a "tracking killer" before, normally that's reserved for killers with a tracking power. But I guess the fact that she can essentially drop chase at will to get sounds back is more than enough of a tracking tool when your power is basically the strongest form of in-chase stealth that DbD has ever had.

Nearly every killer makes a large portion of the playerbase feel miserable. I don't really see the problem with someone wanting to play Spirit when I've had my life threatened multiple times for playing Plague, Blight or Legion.

I only play her when I'm in a ######### mood and my games have been going bad, and when I do I dont hold back.

I feel like there's a huge disparity between people that complain about Plague Blight and Legion compared to those that do it about Spirit.

People complain in this game all the time and you kinda just have to accept that some people are whiners. But the majority of the community just hates spirit and I don't see this for any other killer. I get threatened for Demo and Clown all the time, but demo and clown aren't the killers I see people universally hating on in all the discords I'm in, all the forums I follow and, all the youtube comments I read through. It's always spirit. She just makes most people miserable.

I haven't for a while bc I don't have much unlocked on her on my PC account and there's no fun in playing spirit without running dumb perks.

She is kinda fun to play, if they actually nerf her properly and she's still fun afterwards I'll get back into her more

I play mostly Trapper & Spirit as Killer. Trapper I use all op perks and ready to kill, Spirit I usually just toy with survivors, double hook and let them escape.

There was a match in Ormond where I was able to grab a survivor doing Haunted ground at the very beginning. It was the single phase I did in the match. I still able to 4k (if I wanted to) as 110% Killer because of "standing still mind game"

I played her when she first came out but after a while not enjoying going against her because of how broken she is I stopped because it felt kinda hypocritical to still play her if I hate going against her.

I don't play her at all. I can't bring myself to

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

I don't find it hypocritical to play a killer you don't like to go against, if anything it lends weight to your opinion.

Personally I play all killers to find their counterplay, which is actually extremely helpful when I'm going against a bad Spirit because then I just copy what survivors do to me.

  • Kirkylad
    Kirkylad Member Posts: 1,927

When I played her after 20+ matches I found that with a decent set of headphones and either no iron will on a survivor or strider it's pretty much an easy game in respect to chases. The only time I struggled with her was if it was a team who split up and slammed gens as fast as they could.

I honestly just don't like playing as her, I quite simply don't find her power fun to use at all so I pretty much only play her for challenges or dailies I can't reroll 😄

EDIT: But oh, I wouldn't really say I "hate" her either. More like indifferent, don't even see her that often in the first place.

That's one of the reasons it can be satisfying to play her sometimes, you feel like you actually have a chance no matter what team the game throws at you, if it's a SWF, people abusing offerings for very unfair maps, 4 items with the best add-ons, DS/UB. Bring it on.

If you are playing a weaker killer than red ranks is basically a nightmare as you are constantly going to come across teams like this and have to play unfair matches (not to mention all the fun trash talking you get to receive upon losing, or winning.

  • gibblywibblywoo
    gibblywibblywoo Member Posts: 3,772

Played her for a long time but stopped cold turkey about a year ago. It got to the point where I was going perkless, red ranks and getting 3Ks minimum. Made the game boring.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

Yeah, that's how I feel about all the top killers. Blight, Nurse, Spirit and even Hag just got really boring, really quickly. I just reached a point where learning new things required me to slog through dozens of trials where I'd be doing the same thing over and over again.

No, I don't play her because I try to have a little empathy for survivors when I play killer.

  • TicTac
    TicTac Member Posts: 2,691

I play spirit not very often. Maybe ten times in a year. But when i play her i play her with stridor and use up to yellow addons.

  • Entity_Lich94
    Entity_Lich94 Member Posts: 321

If I do play her, I refuse to use anything like ruin/undying or stridor on her. She doesn't need multiple slow downs plain and simple. Spirits who bring loads of slow downs and use her strong addons are the absolute worst and are most likely pissed off players who got previously destroyed by a SFW and just wish to take it out on others for it.

I don't agree with shaming people who play her but if you the kind of Spirit who plays like this then yeah, you are as bad as the survivors who abused the old ds/unbreakable build

  • Blueberry
    Blueberry Member Posts: 14,459

Without Stridor as soon as you run into an even semi competent group of survivors with Iron Will you're getting destroyed. You're essentially turning every single chase of the game into random guessing on your part.

  • Aven_Fallen
    Aven_Fallen Member Posts: 17,631

I rarely play her. If I play her, I dont run Stridor, because Stridor is a cheap Perk. If I go against 4 Iron Wills, it becomes a little bit challenging, but this is the most challenging it can get when playing Spirit.

Since I also dont run Gen Regression Perks, I dont even know what to run on Spirit most of the time. And I also run either no Add Ons or yellows at max.

But overall, I dont really enjoy playing Spirit, it does not feel rewarding to get Downs with her. I rather 4K with Killers like Pig or Demo and have an actual fun game instead of playing Spirit, knowing that the Survivors cannot really do anything against me, as long as they dont have Iron Will (and this only because I am nice and dont run Stridor, with Stridor, it would be even more of a shitshow).

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

Not true. Footsteps and foliage movement are still always detectable. I just refuse to learn or adjust my audio settings.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

If you're possibly going to have fun with Spirit without going against pseudo-competitive players... Yeah, that's probably not happening, but the last time I played her (like 2 months ago, gods that's actually pretty recent) I was trying to use a Nemesis/Rancor build. It was kind of fun. Got boring real quick, but it was kind of fun.

  • MadLordJack
    MadLordJack Member Posts: 8,814

I agree. Unless someone is doing something to be deliberately malicious, who cares? Its not like survivors are held to the same standard, I've been using Lucky Break and bragging about it and no-one cares even though it's easier, more painful for my opponents and much, much stronger than any killer equivalent.

  • TMCalypso

I always find the complaints about Spirit weird. Only because when she was first released she was actually quite weak, to the point she needed a good buff. Now she is apparently too strong. I have to ask....what made her so weak at the start and what changed to make her so strong?

I play her a lot. More in tournament settings than public matches, but quite a bit either way. It's a very different experience against 4 players on tight comms who really know how to play against her. You really need to know how to position her husk effectively, how and when to reset her idle animation for standstill mindgames, and how to minimize risky phases. Really good survivors are going to maintain a ton of distance when healthy and not give up the first hit, so you really need to be on point. Survivors are halfway across the map by the time you get to gens a lot of times in that setting. You have to pay attention the smallest details like looking a different way than the way to intend to patrol during the phase.

I don't really have any self-imposed rules. Stridor really isn't a crutch when survivors aren't reliant on Iron Will for counterplay. It's more for audio consistency across survivors/maps. I still prefer to just use an EQ and spatial sound rather than Stridor.

I don't hate her but I don't enjoy to play against her at all. I learned to counter her a little bit recently and I stopped to rage quitting.

I would like some kind of nerf on her related to stridor and longer power cool down in chases.

  • Freesham
    Freesham Member Posts: 262

This. I like having variety, so I tend to use all the killers that I purchased (I have all of them).

Sorry but Spirit is a part of the game. Hate the game not the player.

  • dnj510
    dnj510 Member Posts: 438

I don't like her either. Too many people run Stridor, or come running back to the hook after someone is being unhooked. In regards to Stridor, if you don't run Iron Will, the moaning and groaning is so loud in my ears but I can't turn the volume down or else I may not hear her footsteps.

It's usually just a bother to play against her and try to predict her mind games.

Through my record, Spirit without Stridor, if your team have a single IronW to extend chase vs her. Its really hard to get 4k if playing fair.

    By that logic it must be very hard to down survivors with Bubba's chainsaw or even harder to hit them with Doc's shock blasts;
