It's says rank progress +2 but the bar itself is showing you are 1 short of a double pip and you got gold in one emblem.
One of these then has to be a visual bug.

The thing is, I DID double pip... went from one away from Rank 4 to one pip in... so I gained two pips lol

Yeah you need four iridescents at red ranks unfortunately. Same thing happened to me going for an Adept the other day, if I’d hooked a survivor one extra time I would have got it. 😫

If you started from rank 5, then there must be bug. If I was a betting man, I suppose the achievement is probably coded to check if you get enough emblem requirements against your rank color ONLY after your new rank is calculated at the end of the trial. That would explain the issue, because you need 4 iri to get merciless in the red ranks and you got 3.
Short version: you double pipped as a purple rank, but the system probably sees you as a red rank.

I can tell you EXACTLY what happened as the same thing happened to me when I "got" my adept Trickster.
So basically you were one pip away from red ranks before the match begun. Red ranks require one more "point" than purple ranks in order to double pip and get merciless killer. When you pipped into red ranks after the match, the point threshold increased to that of red ranks. After that happens you receive your second pip. This means that even though you double pipped, you didn't get merciless killer because you didn't meet the merciless killer requirements (4 if emblems) at the end of the match.
Like I said happened to me when I tried getting adept Trickster. Pissed me off and I still don't have it yet and I won't be trying to get it either until next month because my rank never reset.
