higher ping than usual - server capacity issue?

its been a few days (more and more recently) that I'm getting into servers that are having higher pings than usual and very unusual player names (sometimes entire lobby is filled with rectangle names).

pings vary from 200~300ms overhead than usual (I usually get ~90ms to max 110) but this past few days I had several games and tries to get into lobbies that resulted in near 400ms and its not only me, all of my friends have higher pings during this time and its not the internet connection issue/provider as the pings to other services are normal and do not change while the pings of the DBD do during the day (gets better at nights and back to normal late nights)

is there any issue with the servers?

You're connecting to another server location. Sometimes I will connect to EU servers from the US.

is there a setting we can modify in the config file or will be added to the game to stop the game from connecting us to the servers that are not close to our region?

region selection or maybe max ping settings?

Not necessarily the game server causing the issue. I'm not currently having any issues playing. It could be any of the hops between you and the game server. Run a traceroute.

    No, there are no settings.

Just dodge the lobby until you get one with a decent ping.

so an update to my issue, from time to time this bug still happens and today (the entire day) I had to go against this

here is where it gets funny, if someone (a friend) from germany or another EU country invites me to their lobby, I get connected to EU servers with no issue and green ping, but if I solo queue I get connected to asian servers (not sure japan or china but the profile characters look like one of their languages, I can't differentiate) with over 350 ms ping

if I invite my friends, they will also get connected to the high ping asian servers.

geologically I'm closer to asian servers, but ping wise I'm closer to EU (my country doesn't have any direct route to the east, most of our connectivity comes from west).

so here is a request, can we have a max ping option in the game before the event please? I just can't play at 350ms! and the game (more and more each day) tries to shove me to the asian servers.

This is a common error that everyone has. That's a issue in their backend code that for some reason, is placing people in the wrong server region. You can't do anything to prevent that since its coded in the server.

What I do to prevent that, which seems to work sometimes, is queueing as Survivor, wait 10 seconds (each 10 seconds your game sends and receives the queue information from the server), for both Killer & Survivor, then open a custom game, then try again to get the lobby you want.

Probably some of these things will correct your placement in the right server, or it'st just luck, idk.

If you are playing late at night there probably aren't many people awake in your region so it's common for the game to match you up in another region with higher player counts.

I don't believe my issue has anything to do with the time of the day since for one there is no server in my region and I used to only get connected to Frankfurt servers and the other reason I'm certain its not the time is that my friends that are EU based are already playing on the Frankfurt server with ease, its just that DBD for some reason doesn't want to connect me directly to Frankfurt and instead puts me in Chinese/Japanese servers.

as I have mentioned earlier, if I get invited to my friends party, I can get Frankfurt lobbies with green ping, if I solo or if I invite them, we get 250~350ms servers.

I'm certain its not time related since 1- there is no server in my region and 2 my friends are online and playing just fine (they are EU based mostly and all play at Frankfurt servers)

as I have mentioned earlier, if I invite them to my lobby we all get put into Asian servers (250~350+ms for all of us) if they invite me we all get put into Frankfurt servers (30~50ms for them, 70~90ms for me)

I used to always get a Frankfurt server a ever since the dedicated servers were introduced until a while ago, not sure exactly when but it was one of the updates of the trickster patch that made this issue occur.

I'm a bit desperate to find a solution to my problem before the next event starts as I will be unable to play a game with this high pings I keep getting (more and more every day)

So I went and did some research (I have a bit of understanding about networking) got my hand on tcpview and wireshark and started digging, my game seems to fetch its initial data from a BE server, then do its handshaking and lobby search via a DE server, then as soon as I'm being put into the lobby its sometimes a USA server or a Chinese one.

I had the entire IP range of the USA and Chinese servers the game tried to connect to blocked, then did another lobby search, it is still putting me into the chinese/usa servers but the strange thing is that the data is being proxied by the game server through the DE servers, so the game can't get direct access to USA/Chinese servers but still wants to push me into those servers!!!

anyone knows how does DBD decide on what region a player is playing from? it doesn't seem to be looking at the IP address as I have tried VPN and the game still puts me into chinese servers most of the time.

so I have finally fixed my issue but it had nothing to do with the game nor patches.

I just have a bit complex network and proxy settings I was using caused the game (and somewhat steam) to get my IP from a Japanese proxy server instead of the direct connection.

I made a proxy rule and ensured that DBD and Steam are sending/receiving their data from the local network directly and it solved all my issues.
