Can we eventually aim for a 120 server tick rate?
Currently we only have around a 60 tick rate according to dbd tweets on the subject. With the new consoles and pc parts pushing some serious fps it would be nice for dbd to support it with a server tick rate of 128 like Valorant has.
It's a long term goal sure but it sure would be sweet.

oh you are so charming

You know it!

There shouldn't be any need for 120 Hz, though, given that most monitors have a 60 Hz refresh rate anyway, with a tiny fraction going to 120 Hz and an even smaller fraction going higher than that..

But what about 3 years from now? I'm talking future proofing the game for when that technology does become the standard.
Of course most people don't have monitors or tvs that handle that. Unless your someone like me who lives and breathes high end equipment as I work as a professional in the content creation world and need it to be able to work from home instead of heading to the studio every day. Plus its just super nice.

Yeah when console runs at a consistent 45fps not the occasional freeze frames at 30

I mean the ps5 and seriesx run at 60 on most games. This is especially true if you don't run in 4k. Dbd has been running at 60 since the ps4 pro and Xbox one x. Though a few maps did dip the framerates a slight amount.

No such thing as "future proofing" unless you can see the future, though. You don't know if higher (>60 Hz) refresh rates are going to become standard. Personally, to "future proof" my eyeballs, I'm going to stick with 60 Hz, so I don't need to buy a super powerful GPU just to be able to get a stable high FPS.
EDIT: Hell, 3 years from now DbD might no longer exist.

Ahh yes let me pay 300 for my optimization not like people need cash
Edit I agree what you said would be nice but there are worse issues

A higher tick rate won't solve DbD's issues. This game is special when it comes to hit reg and hitboxes. Like, REALLY special, and not in a good way. Their initial philosophy was hitreg only needs to be "adequate" in a game like DbD, not "accurate". The problem is the game itself, no amount of extra ticks for their servers is gonna help that.
You also have to consider that last gen consoles can't even handle tickrates like that.

I mean.... only a decade and a half ago the idea console games running at 60fps was lunacy, with it the idea of server tick rates being higher than 20 or 30 was also crazy.
Around the same time we thought that 1080p was as good as it gets. Now 4k is quickly becoming the standard for resolution with 8k already having a niche audience and 16k beginning to be actually usable for filming.
My point is that it's unwise to discredit the medium of gaming for not advancing in technology. The medium is simply getting bigger and better every single year in terms of technical quality. While this current gen is laying off resolution as it's basically caught up to movie standards we have turned to other technical advances like proprietary ssd memory usage that allows for loading time several times faster than ever thought possible on previous hardware. This is of course with the thought that dbd is here for the foreseeable future. It's life span as a live service game longer than games we use to play only a decade ago.

Of course there are worse issues, but it would be a nice thing to work towards. I want a tesla, it doesn't mean I can buy it right now or that I don't have other things that need to be taken care of but it is a long term goal to work towards.
This thread is in no way shape or form meant to be a negative thing but something with a positive outlook to the technical side of this game.

No I recognize that there are significantly more pressing matters that need to be addressed. I agree with you there 💯.
As for the previous gen consoles. While I still believe we should support them for as long as possible they are nearly 10 year old hardware in terms of the original Xbox one and ps4. They can only receive support for so long. People will need to eventually cough up the money if they want to play current games at appropriate quality.

My Xbox1x has never ever run DBD at a steady 60 frames. Ever. It can dip into the teens indoors or with Doc or Freddy. Ffs I still get mini freezes in the dang menus...

Your Edit makes me sad tho. ;(

I mean mine did. I also did mention some maps and graphical updates did effect how strong the framerate was but for the most part it runs it pretty solidly

1080p is still the standard. Steam reports that over 2/3 of all users have a 1080p monitor, and that percentage actually increased slightly, with higher resolutions other than 1440p showing a decrease in usage.
4k is a gimmick, 8k is ridiculous, and 16k is just pointless. Fun fact: due to the human eye's finite resolution, a screen that filled your entire FOV at a certain distance (not sure about the value, but I think it's the average distance that we place monitors at) would have to be around 8k for you to be unable to perceive individual pixels. Screens, however, don't fill your entire FOV, meaning that 8k is already overkill.
Another fun fact: movie theaters don't have 8k movies, despite having screens that are, quite literally, the size of small buildings.
My point is that it's unwise to discredit the medium of gaming for not advancing in technology.
I'm not discrediting anything, I'm saying that unless you know exactly how everything is going to go, "future proofing" is simply not possible. You have no way of knowing if DbD will even still be around in 3 years, nor if people will go for monitors with higher refresh rates and resolution. I doubt they will, given that GPUs that can handle those resolutions and refresh rates have become prohibitively costly and don't seem to be dropping in price, since the manufacturers figured out that people are going to pay stupidly high prices anyway.

Didn't they have an overall plan of a 7 year run with DBD? So yeah gone in three

I think this means they will add more content in that time. When that time is over they will stop updating the game but the servers will still be up for some years.
(Atleast thats what i think and hope)

Here is a link to a currently 23-page thread all about console performance and optimization. The OP of it also runs the Xbox1x.

Affordability does not equate to standard. I gotta disagree with you on this. However we simply have to wait and see. I could be wrong though I'm fairly certain I'm not. I've spent to much of my life working with this stuff to not have an incling into the ears of industry professionals in tv, animation, film, and yes games to know their thoughts on what's coming and what the industry itself considers standard.

Industry standards are irrelevant if people can't actually get the hardware, though. What good is an industry standard of 16k resolutions if two thirds of all gamers have 1080p monitors and their GPUs lack the power to output at those resolutions?
1 -
Because when something becomes the standard that means efforts made to make the thing become more affordable. For example this year I purchased a new TV. Natively runs at 120hz and does so in 4k. It only cost me $900. Tbf that's pretty expensive. However that same TV even 2 years ago would have ran me $2000. Hell probably even more because getting a 56' 120hz tv is hard even now. As the technology gets better the cost of making it goes down. A quick side note, a 80' TV has been made as of last year that natively runs at 256hz at 8k. It costs about 80 grand. But 20 years from now it might just cost a couple grand to make.
That's why phones are better and better every year but generally have stayed about the same price except for the newest trend of an ultimate model. This is why a mid range phone now has the same specs as a high end phone from just 2 years ago. The technology got better. It's not an "if" just a "when". Resolution isn't a gimmick, and neither is how we process, send, and receive information like tick rate or fps.
Look I feel like I'm going in circles. I don't know if dbd will be around for this, I also don't know if 128 tick rate servers are the right fit for dbd. It was just a fun little question to talk a little bit about the new technology that is becoming commercially more and more available.
