Is it the real Jason or is it Trapper with a cosplay?

    Thank you.

This begs the question though: If Jason WERE available as just a skin, would people be happy with it? What I mean is, hypothetically, if someone did magically hack the game so that there was suddenly an optional Jason skin for the Trapper, would that be enough to feel that he IS in the game, or would he need new unique perks and moris to feel at all noteworthy?

Note: I'm not suggesting that anyone hack their game (how people do so and then go online without being detected and auto-banned for having modified files, I don't even know), I'm just wondering about the hypothetical. In fact, let's say that it's not even a hack situation, let's say BHVR can only get Jason's appearance and absolutely nothing else. He has to use whatever animations and abilities the skin is applied to. It's Jason in appearance only, is what I'm getting at. Would you guys be happy with that?

Just curious. I myself would not be.

Jason is trapped behind a litigious legal and not coming any time soon. Thoughts and prayers

It's such a stupid mess too. It's crap that pretty much anything that's happened to the character for the last 20+ years, minus Freddy vs Jason (itself a decade in development hell) has gone to pot.

We have a chance to have THE game. I mean, THE game. Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, Michael Myers, Ash, Ghostface, and a whole slew of up and comers like the Demogorgon and more, plus several more already in the can and on the way. But one of the biggest and most important links in that chain is tied up behind legal nonsense. Sure, we also have Terrordrome, which is amazing for what it is, but Terrordrome ain't DBD.

Terrordrome was not a pirate game and the developers of that game did not pay for the licenses of almost all the characters?

Well actually, they figured out how to mod the live build of the game itself.

One of them actually managed to import Billy's old animations and remove the overheat glow in the live version of the game. Mod makes Billy WAY more enjoyable to play, I used it and it's amazing.

(The mod does not remove overheat from the game)

Some people would be happy, like how I was happy with a sans mii costume in smash

But I feel there might still be people who would want a special Jason character

Oh make no mistake, I completely agree. Friday 2 is up there among my favorite horror movies of all time. A couple of others in the series as well.

I'm just saying, IF a mere skin is all that we could get, period, due to rights and whatnot, would it be worth it? Again I say no.

I just don't get it. I don't understand how people can alter the files of multiplayer games, take them online, and somehow not get detected. Whether it's different skins, animations, unfair hacks, etc., I don't understand how people get away with it. But I guess if it can happen in a 500 million game like GTA V, it can happen to any game.

I guess it's like how I feel about Lisa and Cybil as Cherly alts. They're entirely different characters (I mean ENTIRELY). I like them both, and for that reason I want to buy them when I have a spare $25 dollars to spend on two character models. But Jason is SO iconic, and would feel SO naked without his own dedicated kit, that he would just feel hollow as a skin to me.

Clearly it is false, I found this on Twitter, it is a mod something like that, it alters the skins of trapper and some files so that this results, this is banned and perhaps it would bring legal problems to make it false.

I mean, the devs said they're fine with people altering the skins in the files. Modders in DBD choose not to do unfair stuff, like making objective (generators and totems) textures more visible or being unfair in general. Modding is fun tbh.

Oh modding is absolutely fun. I've made, and been in, some mods for Skyrim. It's incredibly addicting. It's nice to know also that modders respect the game and the devs enough to screw with the game's rules. For the most part.

I didn't know that BHVR was cool with people altering in-game textures, that's very nice of them. I wonder why I haven't seen more than just the altered Jason photo though? I would think that people would be altering the characters left and right.

I wonder if it is bannable to change a skin in Dead by Daylight or otherwise free access. Without receiving a ban.

If so I'm just wondering why I haven't seen any foreign textures yet. To be honest I'm kind of glad that I haven't, I don't really need a bunch of Peter Griffins and meme of the month characters chasing me in this game.

How would you see them if they're not installed on your PC?

The altered skins I doubt that they affect public games, but all kinds of Mod for example would be banned, or hack of ear cells, a simple skin change would be strange to perform and at the same time, expose one's account.

Not sure, I don't know how the framework is designed. I thought perhaps it would be like the map situation, wherein even if I don't have a certain killer I still get offered the map that they come with. I'm also going by past GTA V experience, where you'd see all manner of nonsense despite not having hacked your game to match that of the hacker's game.

    • As an aside, this may sound strange, but I appreciate that you've responded. I know that we got off to a very poor start and I've regretted that since it happened. I know that you're a well-regarded member of this community and I'm sure there's a good reason for that. I'd like to apologize for the insensitivity of some of the remarks I made when I was discussing the LGBQT subject with you. I think I was just having a bad day and put my foot in my mouth. You don't have to forgive me, but I do regret that I said things that made you and a couple of others doubt my sincerity and, for whatever it's worth, I apologize for offending you.

My understanding is that any file that is altered is automatically detected and flagged by Steam or whatever intermediary is connecting the player with the game. That's how it goes for the aforementioned GTA Online, for example. The files MUST match down to the dates and the bytes or the attempt to login will be rejected (or allowed and, subsequently banned). This is why pirates can't go online and play with legitimate purchasers of the game. People still get away with it somehow though.

It can't work. Texture files are local. Hackers in GTA V can do things by tricking the game into enabling noclip, for example, which is a command that most games inherently have, but they can't upload textures onto a server and then force those textures onto you.

PS: I tend not to look at or remember usernames. I find that it helps me stay objective. If you hadn't mentioned all that, I literally would not have recognized/remembered you. Apology accepted.

Ah, I see. I've modded, but the good kind (again, Skyrim and the like). But I've never "hacked" and have no interest in doing so, so I wasn't sure how such things work.

Thank you for accepting my apology. It's actually bothered me for weeks. It was a heated subject and I should have phrased some of my thoughts and comments better. I may love debate, but I never mean to legitimately upset anyone.

It probably doesn't matter (and I can understand why it wouldn't) but should you ever like to start over and ask me to clarify some of the things I said, I'd be happy to oblige. If not that's cool too.

I've never hacked either, it just makes sense. Texture files would never be on a server, they're way too big (they are, in fact, the main reason why games are so big nowadays; the actual code is made up of characters that each take up 1 byte of space).

It's up to you. I'm genuinely indifferent.

  • miketheratguy
    miketheratguy Member Posts: 2,719

This is true, the reason why games have gone from 5 or 6 gigs to a hundred in the span of less than a decade is because of the incessant demand for the crispest, cleanest textures. 4K! Super high-res! Honestly as long as I can see the game and it doesn't look like crap I'd really rather it take up 3 percent of my hard drive rather than 30.

I'll not press the issue then, it's alright to be indifferent. I just recall that some things I said that night were taken out of context and also phrased poorly on my part which didn't leave some of you in the best of moods or with the best opinion of me. So if there had been lingering animosity or doubt I would be happy to discuss things with a cooler head. If it's not necessary though, then that's fine and I respect the decision. Just know that if anything bothers you from before, or in the future, I'll be happy to try to explain in a way that doesn't offend.
