Kill Switch update: We have temporarily Kill Switched the Forgotten Ruins Map due to an issue that causes players to become stuck in place. The Map will remain out of rotation until this is resolved.

New Ruin is Old Ruin at high ranks

At Rank 1, I do a quick Ruin check and proceed to go totem hunting until it is found. Sometimes I have to find it by myself, but I’ve been noticing more and more people doing the same thing.

It’s just not worth working on a generator early game if you get interrupted. All your progress will go to zero because of Ruin.

Most Ruin games I play in have a slow start (similar to Corrupt games) while the totem is being found and then turn into steamrolls because the Killer was counting on the Ruin regression.

In the case where I’m the first chased and Ruin lasts longer, the game usually starts strong and then grinds to a halt in the mid game because of the massive regression, which is hard to come back from.

Basically from my experience, its better to cleanse Ruin early than let it wreck you later in game.

Old Ruin required survivors to have a much higher skill ceiling. This was a problem for low ranks, who don't get the game fully, but trivial for super high ranks who nail perfect checks every time already. It didn't work great in either case, instead proving very useful at weeding out bad survivors from shooting through the ranks by just holding M1 and facerolling to victory.

Survivor gameplay would be a lot more challenging if old Ruin was dynamically factored into the game. Are you 20? Good zones are full sized. Are you 10? Good zones are half sized. Are you rank 1? You have to hit only perfect checks. And so forth.

I think Old Ruin was better, to be honest. It made skill checks actually demand skill, it looked cool, encouraged survivors to hunt the totem (secondary objective), affected every single generator at the same and had synergy with Pop.

New Ruin is powerful, but it is not the same.

Old Ruin was very harsh on new players and on consoles. Especially, because before the hud rework skill checks were a tad laggy.

As killer, I didn't use either versions of Ruin.

As survivor, I'd take old Ruin any day of the week IF matchmaking worked, which never does. With old Ruin, if all survivors belonged to their rank, they just powered through it. The issue came up when a bad survivor was in the team and all of a sudden it was a 3v1 gen-wise. And probably for chases as well.

With current Ruin, especially in the high-mobility plus Tinkerer meta, you often just have to get rid of the totem. Heck, even when facing m1 killers, if someone can't pull their weight in a chase, current Ruin is gonna do a world of damage.

You only need to get the totem if your team is trash, like as long as everyone is doing a gen you cant all be pushed off. Even if the kille ris blight with tinkerer and ruin etc. You can all do gens and do somewhat of a loop and boom you win. Issue is bad survivors are at high ranks yet again. Meaning they cant do a chase or really do gens meaning the game is 10times harder.

Trust me, if people was in the right rank bracket you could have ruin up all game and still win

Just do separate totems, ruin only matters after two have been done and the map is smaller. If you're all divided then one of you is bound to run into it just in general gameplay.

I'm a killer who uses ruin as only gen defense perk. I tell you right now that old ruin was MUCH better perk.

Ok now can we actually ADDRESS WHY RUIN IS IN PLAY MOST OF THE TIME now?

Old ruin honestly made gens more interactive/fun/skill based. You aren't guaranteed a gen pop, and must struggle for it along with your team.

Sure eventually you learn to hit every single great check but the tension from knowing you might not hit it just feels different and better than "I walk to gen and get free pressure" like new ruin.

Old ruin kept bad survivors in their place. Out of red ranks.

The old Ruin Undying meta made me accustomed to totem hunting. I start each game looking for Ruin if it's up.

You can say that you are 1 of 4 and don't need to leave a gen if you aren't getting pushed off of it, but since your teammates are, you have to assume they are losing progress on multiple gens, or else wasted objective time snowballs into multiple hooks with no gens done.
