Let's talk about toxicity
Comments
-
Oh no, I get that you were using my response as an example
I just wanted to make a point that I don't want to be lumped in with people who treat certain things in this game like a social taboo when it's a video game
Some stuff is annoying and frustrating about it, I think everyone probably agrees DBD is one of the most frustrating games ever made lol
2 -
I just wanna clarify that I don't think anyone should intentionally try to ruin someone elses experience because that's not who I am. I was just trying to say I think players should play how they want as long as they're not breaking any rules.
1 -
Toxic: hacking the game. threats, slurs, wishing illness or death on other players through messages or chat.
Not toxic but deliberately obnoxious: hitting on hook, flashlight clicking, teabagging. general snark (gg ez) in chat or messages
Non toxic, normal gameplay: everything else
It's a thin line between being obnoxious and outright toxic.

I'm just sitting here on the game giving out positive vibes much respect to my fellow fog traveling survivors as I try to hunt them .As survivor I'm saying GG checking out the killers builds making notes to try out later.
Always stated be the change you want to see I'm just one person being wholesome respective and kind but I hope those I meet in the fog appreciate it 💕🐷
3 -
I don't say gg to survivors I kill because I feel like they're going to insult me for killing them.

So here's the thing:
There is a distinctive difference between trashtalking and being a doiche.
Earlier today, I had a moment where a Nancy was obviously going to Dead Hard for Distance, and I called it:
"And Dead Head for Distance..."
*Nancy Lunges forward.*
"Called it. Piece of #########."
Keep in mind, I didn't really hate the Nancy that much, I just found it obnoxious that she did what she did, and rather than save her Dead Hard to escape being hit, she used it to get to a pallet, only to go down a few seconds later.

I only teabag as a means of funny communication. Its almost like morse code when you and your team are teabagging eachother lol. I only teabag killer as a means to say hello sir they have been hooked multiple times its my turn now let's have a good chase! And do my best from there. I try to spread hooks out honestly to drag the game a bit longer.

You might be the single most positive, wholesome player I've had the pleasure of meeting in game. Your approach is definitely appreciated by this fellow Pig player. 💕
2 -
Just say GG in your heart I'm sorry it feels like that and I understand totally that feeling, even I who is extremely above wholesome gets nasty messages but I turn that into positive vibes and keep being me 🐷💖 Amit gonna let it stop me trying to make dbd a positive place for people 🐽💕

If you're good, I'm sure you realize this game is 1v4, not 1v1. So questions about how do YOU play around a facecamping bubba are pointless. You should be asking how your TEAM can play around him, which is by doing gens.
3 -
I have to say - it's nice seeing people willing to engage in trying to do something about it.
And I really appreciate seeing people starting to divorce legit gameplay from the word. If we want to root out the worst in our community and make it unacceptable, we need to be targeting those who really need to be targetted - the people who make these nasty remarks to each other over losing in a flippin' video game.
Sitting here and arguing about legit gameplay being toxic is pulling attention from the undesirables we should be railing against - those who abuse each other verbally and say vile things BECAUSE THEY LOST.
I have no problems with people saying they find a particular manner of play boring or unfun - but lumping it together as Toxic to me is a form of Hyperbole that has gotten out of hand and is akin to lumping certain political positions with the 3rd Reich... it's just so counterproductive to engage in such pointless rhetoric and closes discussion.
1 -
That's the reason I made this. I couldn't have said it better myself

If your on hook then its up to your team to do gens, if your not then stop trying to be altruistic against those playstyles because it rewards the killer every time and just hope you do gens quick enough.
1 -
How is flashlight clicking and tbagging not toxic? Or hitting on hook?
1 -
First two are attention seeking techniques. You can choose to NOT get upset by it or take it seriously.
3rd one is the killer taking out frustration or being bored. Again, you can choose NOT to get upset by it or take it seriously.
These things are not on the same level as death threats, wishing harm on others, and other things that should be called toxic, so stop using the word for it.
1 -
"Toxicity", to me, is simply the act of perpetuating a negative and unpleasant environment by being consistently negative and unpleasant oneself.
2 -
I'd consider an action or words toxic if they:
- Aim to degrade or cause negative emotions on other person
- Aim to force your beliefs or desires on another person
- Aim to cause conflict
---
Examples for each would be:
- Tea-bagging, insulting, wishing harm on others
- Trying to shame or otherwise enforce your style of play/ideas on others
- Anything else that may be provocative or be done under the intent to cause needless confrontation
Another example of the second point would be the public inciting of unwanted debates of beliefs to other community members. Fortunately, I can't think of anyone inconsiderate enough to do this on DBD; nor any other external parties who would happily jump ship on the victims of such an action.
2 -
I agree.
1 -
So nothing is toxic and it's all in our heads?
0 -
Tyoically in the extreemly rare (Like 1 in 50 games) that survivor are toxic I just play as normal and inevitably I simply punish their arrogance. Predictable is the last thing you want to be in this game and playing in a toxic manner is predictable and therefore punishable. You can bait out certain actions and immediately respond accordingly.
Like if 1 dude is constantly buzzing around you with a flash light? Well thats 1 guy not on gens so you chase anyone else you're already pressuring half the team.
0 -
The thing is, this game doesn't allow for much for communication other than a point, hitting ctrl repeatedly, and beckon. Well, I guess circling if you like. But with limited ways to communicate "hey, chase me!", it's not surprising that many would resort to a way that many CHOOSE to find provocative would use that method.
As for killer's hitting survivors, it's a challenge that screams "I'm camping this guy, you going to do something about it?" Frankly, it's stupid - but to choose to call it something other than a bad tactic (as it's feeding survivors information) is on the player. To me, it's a signal to slam gens, nothing more.
Camping - killer might not know better or have a challenge
tunneling - see above
pointing/t-bagging - see my previous statements
Anything that the devs have specifically called out as an exploit we shouldn't do - that's rulebreaker and deserves to be called out as that - but again the player may not know better.
Rather than getting upset when you can't 100% sure know the reason behind it is just inviting yourself to have a negative attitude about the game, causing YOU to be toxic in retaliation. It's better to just give people the benfit of the doubt when it comes to gameplay - it's just better that way
In the end, we need to be focusing on the bad-actors who act so vile just because they lost at a flippin' video game.
1 -
Oh killers applied pressure without toxic camping. You know how? By using Undying Ruin. But survivors didn't like the idea and wanted it nerfed. So back to camping and tunneling.
1 -
You've forgotten forced bleed-outs, kebabing, t-bagging, solo-preying, and general bullying.
Using a flashlight isn't toxic. Binding it to scroll wheel and running around harassing the killer when you SWF mates have done 4 of the 5 gens is.
0 -
There are so many good perks to apply pressure. Some killers just want a excuse to camp. You can still 4K without camping and tunneling
0 -
Yes, which results in a depip for everyone. Seems like you like to camp since you are defending it so much…
0 -
I tend to avoid it. It only works against bad teams. I guess that's why you get so bothered by it.
0 -
Sure, at rank 18. But not at red ranks. Because survivors also have so many good perks available.
2 -
People use this argument a lot, but I think it's important to remember that no one is actually getting killed or fighting for their life when they play this game. The murders are pretend. All that's happening is that people are playing a video game. There's no reason why you need to be mean to anyone because of that.
Like, imagine if you played Monopoly, and you spent the whole game taunting and insulting the other person because they played Top Hat instead of Thimble. Yeah, you would probably get inside their head and make them play differently, because they're having such a bad time being near you, but it would be a weird, rude thing to do. And, in my opinion, it would also be morally wrong to prioritize winning a meaningless game to such a degree that you were willing to bully someone to do it.
0 -
Ofc I get bothered, I paid for this game just so I can’t play it because someone wants to stand in front of my hook. Do you expect me to happy about it?
1 -
Then switch to killer and don't stand in front of the hook.
Problem solved
1 -
I play killer almost every day, don’t know what your point is
0 -
You complained that you couldn't play the game you payed for, because someone is standing in front of the hook.
The point is, that you could simply switch the role and mark the difference. Play how you would like the other killers to play.
1 -
That’s what I already do, I never camp/tunnel even if I’m losing. No one to blame except myself if I can’t apply enough pressure even with all the slowdown perks that exist. No need to ruin the game for someone else
1 -
Good, we need more killers like you, to lower the survivor queues.
Have you considered playing more killer? Since you said, that you play killer almost every day.
1 -
Depends on what I want to play, I’m trying to play both killer and survivor evenly. Still don’t think me playing killer would make a change to survivor queues.
0 -
Every little counts.
1 -
Cant agree with that. Tunneling is a tactic for many things. Sure it can be from pure dislike for someone but generally its because options are getting thin. If im getting Sweat with friends gen rushed as a non mobile m1 killer I will probably tunnel and start playing around the hook. My last game as Myers had 2 gens popped within minutes of the game starting. I force tunneled one off gens and hooked a mile out. Then defended closest gens to them. This slowed the match and let me regain some control. Admittedly it didn't go as planned and ended up mori on the first guy and 2 NOED hooks but what are ya gonna do.
0 -
Yeah, but why tunnel if you have noed? I understand in the egc but you might want to try some slowdown perks.
0 -
This.
1 -
NOED feels like a catch out gimmick without something like BloodWarden to back it up. I had a mori mission in this case, but I used the guy I mori'd as bait, unlucky for the helper they popped last gen as I was about to hit him. I just give enough space to make people wanna try but not enough to get away. I'm admittedly newish to the game so lack any slow down perks other than Corrupt(not unlocked on Myers yet) that recently showed up in shrine. Still farming cannibal to 35 for bbq atm. I guess since im semi new and lack a lot of meta perks which makes tunneling slightly more of a pay off than higher rank games. Though it feels like tunneling and hanging in the area of hooks with gens has its place to slow momentum as they will usually split one off to help the guy slowing progress.
0 -
Yeah I understand that, I know it’s the best thing to do and honestly the only thing you can do is wait until you get the perks you need. I still don’t think tunneling is that good for anyone. Maybe you enjoy it but there are other ways to apply pressure. Tunneling and camping is the cheapest
0 -
And I'm not saying that I'm right or wrong. As I said before toxic is just a word and you decide what is toxic to you and not. But what we do know is that people will do things in this game having different intents. For example when I was new to this game I thought that people t-bagging at exit gate did this to say thanks for the game or something, so the first killer who let me just leave I gave him a t-bagging thank you before I left. He probably thought I was very toxic, but my intent was the opposite.
