What happened to Oni?
It feels like no one ever talks about this Killer anymore, plus in my experience he's a very rare Killer to go up against. What happened to him?

He’s kinda hard to play and many don’t want to put the time in

He can be very fun and I like playing him. But he can also be very punishing if you have hard early game vs good survivors.

His early game is the only thing that keeps me from playing him.

Not talking about a Killer much is kinda what happens when that Killer's not OP or UP, when new Killers come out, and when Killers that aren't that Killer get updates.

Many people prefer to play as killers that are easier. Oni without topknot takes skill to play, and he struggles terribly in the early game.

In my experience every killer has highs and lows in popularity. I'll go a while without seeing a killer and then I'll get nothing but that killer for a while.
As for why he isn't discussed much, why would he be? He's a solid killer. Not oppressive. Not weak. Overall well designed and enjoyable. That doesn't leave much to talk about as usually the forums are used to air complaints.

I play Oni almost daily. Such a fun killer and definitely among the strongest in the game.
Recently I managed to stock 300 Topknots on him lmao.
And here's my bugged Oni without a sword. He stayed almost a week like that on my lobby for some unknown reason.
Wish I faced him more as survivor though.
(sorry for pic quality, way easier than screenshots)

I play Oni daily but my usual time is very late, I main him but if you want to play against more, try playing at 12 a.m central to like 3 a.m.
You might find me playing Oni.
But yeah there are barely any other oni mains out there.

Oni is the homie, picked him up 6 months ago and havent played any other killer as consistently since. In my opinion hes the most fun in the game.

This. If you go against decent loopers, it can take a great deal of time before even getting to use your power.

Difficult killer to learn since his attack is like a magnet to walls and his early game can really really screw him over. he is also a little map dependant.

Oni has a horrible early game with the game becoming more and more early game dependent due to the current meta.
This is before you consider the fact that his power is extremely punishing and hard to use.
Plus windows and even simple TL walls can force you to drop the chase because you lack a normal lunge while empowered causing those tiles to be insanely strong against an empowered Oni.
So its not overly surprising he's not seen much: Bad in the current meta + hard to play + Window tiles destroy him.

Maybe an unpopular thing to say, but i think it ultimately comes down to the fact that the devs wanted to make a successor to old Billy as a go fast killer, and Blight became more fit for that role than Oni.
Oni is kind of a boring and one dimensional killer to main in my opinion because there's really one way to play him which is putting Infectious Fright and going for mass slugs.
In general he's a noob stomper and lot of survivors will feed you easily, but a smart teams that splits up, plays it safe and rushes gen can make him have to sweat a lot to win.

I think a lot of Onis moved on to Blight after the buffs. He's just as mobile and he can use his power right at the start of the match.
Side note, I'm surprised Scalped Topknot still exists in its current state. It truly makes Demon Dash one of the best powers in the game.

The predrop-and-W meta hit him hard.

People don't really talk about oni due to him not really being super strong nor being weak. As for why people don't play him I'm pretty sure it's cause of the early game where you literally have no power and that he's not that easy to play and compare to spirit or blight you get much less value out of oni compared to them. It's unfortunate cause I love oni and I want to go against more of them as well as play them but I play on console so the performance makes his demon strike EXTREMELY hard to use. I feel like oni should get a rework simply to make him feel better such as making his demon dash quicker (and nerfing top knot or completely remove it) or make it so he has some sort of advantage when he doesn't have blood fury such as maybe having a smaller terror radius, make his passive charge rate better. Im definetely alone on this but he feels... outdated? I don't know what term I should use but he doesn't feel modern. Btw more oni skins pls bhvr.

Personally, I feel like his dash lacks the control to keep him as a feasible threat in anything but deadzones. I play against him a lot and have never been slammed. And I suck at survivor and have no clue how to efficiently loop.

I have the same issue with Alchemist Rings. I am like: "I need as many as possible and if it's a 1000 then it's a 1000."
But in reality I use them maybe once every 30 Blight matches, if not rarer.

Oni is probably one of the most balanced killers out there and when there are no problems people tend to not talk about it.
It's a good sign if a killer isn't discussed much

I have exactly the same problem. I never use Topknots because I know how unfair it is, but I still purposely go for it on bloodwebs. It's like satisfaction knowing I have the power to ruin 300 matches.

Played 3 games last night as him. 2 x 4k and a key/vigo ttv swf duo who both undeservedly escaped lol. He's good fun but yeah, super rare to face.
