On the subject of over-competetive play in DBD

Otzdarva recently uploaded an interesting video revealing what he was counting secretly on his streams, which happened to be meme addons. Watching the video it dawned on me how right he really was in his assessment of the game, players are very competitive in a highly casual environment. This game, by its nature is quite casual, you can't really rely on your teammates, a lot of the things in this game carry big meme energy, tons of perks and addons exist solely as a joke or laughable but effective tool, etc etc. However despite this, a very significant portion of players (often independent of rank) try exceptionally hard to win. Bringing their strongest stuff every match, using whatever tactics are necessary to escape/4k even if they are the only one trying that hard, you know the drill. Whats the forum consensus on this? Is being over-competitive a healthy way to approach the game? Why do you think people are like this, more particularly what about DBD do you think inspires this mindset? I'd love to hear what you guys have to say.

Reward players for having fun? Thats hard to balance.

Maybe non ranked gamemode would help

I've always felt mentally exhausted of doing the meta. I always disliked the Meta in every single game, but... dbd kinda makes it where I need to have one to at least have an attempt. That's Ruin or Pop. I don't count Barbacue because I want bloodpoints.

I'm trying to stray away now, but..

    It's difficult

He is right. But what I find funny is that the game is actually MUCH more fun if you play it casually. Once you start going hardcore, meta-perks/builds, the game becomes infinitely less fun.

Oh look. More 'Trying is bad, mmkay?'

The fact that effort is derided and so many people can't enjoy anything challenging is very, very sad.

I absolutely find try hard matches boring. Unless I am trying to complete a challenge, I only bring meme builds on killer. As killer, the most fun I have is against survivors that try more to prevent me from hooking than focus gens. The ones people refer to as "bully squads". They are so fun to face.

Survivor is a little different. I hate the try hard, tunnel at 5 gens and slug for the 4k killers. But at the same time, I try to play a little more optimally because I don't want to screw over my teammates. I have been playing a lot more survivor lately just because I find killer boring and have been experimenting with more meme builds. Currently I'm trying to cause some confusion with Diversion.

I try not to get mad though when I face someone that is trying their best as long as they are playing within the rules. Even though it may be annoying, it is ultimately their choice to be able to try for the win or screw around.

I've always found the "race to the bottom" mentality that a large portion of the community has to be a bit odd. It's a ranked pvp game. A terribly balanced one if we're being honest, but it's a pvp game at it's core. I've never played another pvp game where players constantly shame others for winning or trying to play the game optimally/mechanically well. There's a cultural thing especially on NA servers where you should play to the level of your competition. If they're terrible, you're supposed to play equally as terrible and not punish any mistakes.

Because in other games everyone has the same options to be equally powerful. That's where the difference lies.

Honestly, I don't mind the competitive approach. Yes, it is not that fun, but everyone has the right to use whatever they want.

And if they want to bring the strongest perks and add-ons every single game, then so be it.

This happens in tons of PvP games. I first heard the phrase “sweaty tryhard” as a gaming insult like 10 years ago, it’s been around forever and is still a commonly used term. DBD isn’t an outlier in this respect, it’s extremely typical in fact, all PvP games have people who complain about certain characters/guns/items/strats because they’re sweaty or OP or boring or cheesy or whatever.

In fact it’s not just limited to gaming, you can see people who watch certain sports using the same complaints about fighting styles or ways of playing. Google “Floyd Mayweather boring style” for an obvious example.

Complaints about people tryharding will never stop, ever. So it’s pointless to even worry about it. If you want to play in a competitive way, you just have to get used to it.

I actually run meme builds as Survivor quite often because, I'm likely going to die anyway.

Breakout / Sabotage / Spinechill / Dead Hard is my favorite loadout.

Yeah, if I ran Decisive Strike / Unbreakable / Dead Hard / Borrowed time, I might survive more but, what's the fun in that?

Those options exist here were it not for bad map design and matchmaking in many cases. People would be surprised at how balanced competitive play can be when random factors are controlled. So many of this game's balance issues stem from the fact that neither side has any idea what to expect going into a match or how to prepare

I don't understand the problem: as a survivor I have 4 goals, I quote them according to their importance: 1) help my mates. 2) escape the killer 3) generators 4) escape. what other way to play is there?

Agreed, a good SWF can stand up to a skilled Meta Killer but, nobody knows what they are facing. Solo's get the short end of the stick here, unfortunately.
