The psychology of the killers choosing targets
I've noticed that if I'm with other survivors and the killer find us, if I'm playing Jeff he almost always chases me first.
Now, Jeff is a big guy. Makes me wonder, would killers unconsciously go after the bigger targets first, like Jeff and David, leaving the smaller ones to be less likely to be chased?
Curious.

I play 50/50 survivor/killer. The way I usually pick is:
A: Obsession (get DS out of the way early if possible)
B: The guys with a toolbox
C: The guys with the least flashy or fancy clothingA is pretty self explanatory.
B is because if they do happen to be playing with friends, the guy with the toolbox is usually the dedicated generator guy (or very rarely, the guy who's going to jump in as you down someone to sabotage hooks). By chasing this guy, you slow down generator progress and also prevent any sabotage shenanigans. As an added bonus, if they are playing with their sharply dressed "Look at me!" bright pink Claudette friend with a flashlight, they've got a good chance of chasing after you to try to take aggro or get a flashlight save, effectively taking two people off of generators. The flashlights are easy to counter so that's not really a concern.
C is basically the last resort. Going back to the last point, if they're flashy, they usually want to be chased. If you don't chase that guy, you can spot the exact moment you broke their heart as they start chasing you, the killer, for attention. The less flashy guys usually don't want to be chased and usually aren't as well versed, making it easy to get some pressure right out of the gate. Once you've got one guy on the hook, you've got a distraction to buy you some time while you chase the more experienced survivors.
Although by the time I get to C, I usually just pick whoever goes the best direction for me. If one guy runs to the window nearby and a second guy runs to a pallet while a third sprints off in the open, I'll either go for the guy running in the open and get an easy hit or go for the guy at the pallet to burn it up ASAP.
I'm sure other people have their own ways, and I'm sure there's stereotypes for each survivor and how they think they play, but that's just how I do it usually.

I don't have much rhyme or reason, though that should change. Not super great at tracking specific people.
If I find someone is a pain in the ass to chase, though, they drop in priority. I try to find others.

1) I kill tool boxes first
2) I go after obsession next
3) Med Kits are the next to die
4) Flashlights last (because most people suck at them)I typically ignore the bright colored bait, unless they are just shoving themselves in my face and are body blocking me.
Lastly I tunnel Claudettes.

If you're playing Jake then my Leatherface only wants you.

Usually I remove survivors first from the game that annoy me (flashlight clickers etc). Also if you wear a bright skin, chances are high that I go for you
1 -
As the most basic example, you should always assume that if a Jake and a Leatherface are in the same game Leatherface will always "tunnel" Jake. (It's related to the difficult to obtain "Jake face" cosmetic.) After this primary example, survivors are generally targeted under two thought patterns, logos, and pathos.
Under logos (logic) survivors are targeted through:
- Obsession Status (delete Decisive Strike)
- Cosmetic colors (Kill off the hard to see ones first.)
- Perk identifications (That one guy has Borrowed Time or Saboteur)
- Skill Assessment (This person seems smarter than the rest)
- Item Usage (Toolboxes and Keys are bad/ Medkits and Flashlights are good)
- Kill Progress (Times hooked >1)
Under pathos (emotion)
- Paranoia (Survivor is constantly near killer)
- Rage (Survivor excessively t-bags, clicks flashlights, and in general is directly taunting the killer)
- Focus (How well their bright clothes stand out)
- Malice (Filled with rage and anger they will not hesitate to target victims of an ill-timed hook save)
In trials, I generally try to remember names. If you have a funny name or if I just killed you last game or saw you last game I'll play nice. However, if your name is something that is just idiotically offensive (I've seen at least 3 "fuhrers") you'll get a free ride on the tunnel train. Aside from that I just refer to the above lists.
4 -
They generally pick the easiest target. Chances are you are running away from pallets/windows/loops while the others are running towards it. Or the killer chased you previously and know you are the weakling of the group. Or you are just the one closest to them when they approach. Next time you are in a group and the killer comes up to you run to a loop. They will probably not chase you.

Ahahaha
No, one thing I've learned this past week - leave Jeff until last. I'm fed up of that fatty breaking all my damn hooks.
If possible chase others, or leave him slugged if he goes down at the edge of a map.
Breakdown has the potential to be as annoying as DS.2 -

It could be that Jeff is really loud even when he is not injured and with the audio being messed up at the moment you might just be the easiest to find.

I've played against a bunch of Jeffs with Breakdown and it hasn't affected me that much. I feel like the only time that would matter is if you have a bunch of survivors with BD and they all get caught in the same area.

Jeff is loud AF and doesn't blend in very well at all, making him a big target. Could also be that killers assume Jeff's won't be loaded with good perks since he just came out.
1 -
I usually just chase the one closest to me.2
-
I usually avoid attacking Feng Min. She too cute to kill. Especially with that cute little face mask skin.3
-
I normally run whoever i run into first unless i have reason to target someone specific like running Dying Light.
I will however tunnel any hook blockers, flashlighters or teabaggers.
1 -
I have a friend who tunnels Ace every time he sees him, he hates the character. Me I don't like Dwights, they're silly, stupid, and arrogant. If you want my attention, you won't get it, I'll kill you last because you're the least useful member of your team, everyone wants you to succeed so you won't. But I will say, if you're Nea and you're nice I'll probably let you go because she's my favorite Survivor.
1 -
@HatCreature
Awh, I do the same lol.
I'll give feng the hatch anyday as long as she doesn't have a flashlight2 -
I slug Jeff's and Laurie now.
I try to tunnel a toolbox.
I ignore flashlight clickers.
Everyone else is just who is easiest to hit and who i can quickly get out of game.
3 -
If you go after someone just because of the character they pick then sorry you are just an a--hole.
1 -
I ignore the obsession, pretend they don't exist since the risk of a long chase only to get DS'ed means I have just wasted precious time.
People who dress flashy are the ones who just crave attention and want to be chased, I ignore them and wait for their over-altruistic ego to be their doom when they get too close after hooking someone.
The guy with the toolbox MUST be hooked, they're the ones who often work on generators, minding their own business.
If someone has a flashlight, I will down someone and expect them to come running when I move over the downed survivor. This is great if you play as Hag or Trapper since you can use the trap animation to trick them into thinking you're picking them up. Thanks to Tru3Ta1ent for showing me that one.
3 -
Toolboxes get my attention the fastest. After that, any Dwights. Next would be no shirt Davids. Beyond, everyone is fair game.
1 -
i go after the annoying ones because they're usually swf and i can most of the time make it to basement to pull of my trick.
0 -
I generally prioritize based off of behavior.
if someone is trying to distract, I look for who they're trying to protect.
if someone is constantly running in to save their friend... their friend is now bait which will be hunted and downed to bring out their friend and give me a 2 for 1 special.
if someone is decent at looping and teabags or clicky-clicks everytime they drop a pallet I will slug and teabag (as amanda) until they die, hoping they've learned they aren't as good as they think.
teammates who sell out other survivors are also given top priority for slugging or hooks and being face camped.
otherwise, I'm an opportunist... I take what the round gives me... and generally aside from toxic asshats... I hook and release without killing.4 -
The only "rules" I go by based on which survivor someone's playing is this
- If I can make an Adam my first hook, I won't hesitate. They really do tend to run Deliverance.
- Don't slug Bill for too long, because Unbreakable
- Assume a non-obsession Laurie still has DS if there's another obsession
When it comes to behavior I tend to leave any dedicated flashlight clickers alone, if I'm lucky they're an empathy + flashlight user that won't work on gens anyway. And that's pretty much it.
Besides the fact I tend to punish people that intentionally sandbag. Think pointing at lockers or bodyblocking other survivors. I'll admit I tend to slug the unhooked person and chase the unhooker even if it's a completely heartless farming unhook though.1 -

If I do get tunneled I use bond to prevent screwing over my teammates. The only time I would try to get attention is when another team member is getting tunneled because I would rather die in their place.
As for the OP, I'd tend to try to go after fresh targets. However if someone annoyed me a lot or was just being a dick... Well, if I WANT you to die, you WILL die. No excuses, no equivocations, no crying.
That or I go after the first person I see if they aren't hiding very well (especially after a unhook), though if I see someone else maybe I might go after them. I don't particularly target survivors on their own, just the player behind the survivor.

I just go after the most convenient target due to the path they chose to run at, how close they are, if they are running towards my traps, etc.

I don't know if you're on console or PC but all the Dwights I see on PS4 hide in lockers, screw their team over, try to be good but end up failing, or they're trying too hard to get my attention. If you're a great Dwight then awesome, set that standard. And I actually don't like the character himself, as in the backstory, he sounds like a tool who desperately wants to fit in which clashes with my nonconformist lifestyle, he's not a bad person I just don't like him.
Unless he's wearing that awesome blue pizza hoodie or the Vigo outfit, he actually looks less like a tool in those outfits.

I don't really have a strategy when picking survivors I just go after the first person I see unless he leads me to another survivor then I go after that survivor.0

PS4 Dwight here, the only time I would actually go into lockers is for the memes or if I have to afk for some reason. Otherwise I'd rather be as far away from killers as possible. Dwight does seem like a tool but not in my hands 8-) I unfortunately cannot change the way other people play Dwights, I can only hope I don't get killed because someone assumed all Dwights were the same.

If there are multiple target and I got to chose one, I'll take the weak link first, looking how they run, if they're looking behind them, etc, so I can get a hook fast and make this surv waste pallets.
If there are a lot of item then I'll focus toolboxes user.

with the new locker change, I hide in lockers sometimes, but mostly right before a hook, to wait out 4 seconds for BBQ & chili.

I prioritize Survivors with dark clothes, people who run Calm Spirit, and Obsessions because of DS. I will ignore Survivors who want to be chased (if they want to be chased bad enough, then I’ll save them for last) and Survivors with Breakdown (unless they got to stage 2 on their first hook).0
-
I kill Bills as often as I can. Borrowed Time and Unbreakable are annoying to deal with, but really it is just because Bill players can be really smug acting and rude. Jeff is usually next on my list of survivors I want to deal with immediately. Left to his own devices he can become a huge aura reading dispenser with aftercare and I don't much care for Breakdown or distortion. So removing a jeff makes the game easier for me. After that it is usually just trying to kill whoever I can find. I will camp if the survivor count is low or if I know this will be the only kill I get that game. Yet, I get bored standing around so I usually end up doing a small patrol anyway and someone comes for the survivor only to get chased off.

If someone is deliberately targeting you in a game, just block them with MLGA
MLGA has been officially confirmed by EAC whom they said they will not ban users for it as, as it doesn't modify in game files. Devs and mods will says use at your own risk but EAC is the boss here, so it's allowed in this regard as they have given the okay to streamers and ppl who asked.

As a Dwight main this hurts, since I actually do generators and help out my teammates when I can.
I feel the same way. I’m (obviously) a Meg main and the age old “Meg main, big brain” is true for most players who play Meg, they have an IQ of about 3000 when it comes to altruistic plays and fixing generators. They are just useless to the team. I however always contribute to my team and not linger around doing nothing. Most players expect Claudette’s to play like OchiDo or Nea’s to be either urban evading or play like pro-jukers. It’s just a stigma for the characters.
all megs i play against are stupid and stupidly altruistic but do are most survivors im up against. if i get my way and hook someone in basement im pretty much guarantied a 4k. please survivors, change your ways. as someone who plays killer and survivor equally, it hurts to play against stupid survivors.

Priority list
1. Hook states death hook survivours get focused.
2. Positioning close to a pallet less likely to target or in the open more easier to target.
3. Health state injured targets throw down pallets faster and are more prone to cracking under pressure.
4. Previous chases with that survivour if they loop well leavem till last.
5. Obssesion ds eats too much time and creates an additional chase. Always target non obssesion or slug the obssesion.
If the game is goingg very poorly for survivours. Ill spread my hooks out to give em more of a chance but if gens are getting done and ruin is down well i cant afford to play nice.0 -

Curious.
