Could the Stranger Things DLC be changed to an original DLC?
I had a certain idea come up when I thought about the departure of Stranger Things in DBD. It is a disappointing event, even if it is understandable. But the thing that personally bothers me is the fact that the Demogorgon isn’t going to be playable for new players anymore. Not because of the character (even though it is awesome), but because of his power. Removing the Demogorgon also means removing his power and playstyle. I don’t like the idea of actual gameplay being exclusive to a hand full of people, even if I am one of them. I play Demo a lot and find him very fun, but I will feel guilty for playing as him when others can not, especially because he is so fun.
It is strange how the devs made this playstyle by themselves but have to remove it because it is tied to Stranger Things, even if it was code made by them.
That was when I suddenly had an idea: what if they reskined the Stranger Things DLC?
What I mean by that, is what if they create a new killer design that inherits the power of the Demogorgon? You could consider it a Legendary skin of sorts for the Demogorgon, but is an original character and isn’t a legendary, just the normal skin that people will get when they buy the DLC instead (although it would certainly change their looks drastically). This killer can thus use the power Of The Abyss, although it will obviously be called differently. Add in some new art for add-ons, new backstories, new menu, in-game and mori animations (with no blooming mouth, sorry), etcetera. And of course, make two new original survivors and rework the art for the perks of Steve and Nancy so they don’t represent Stranger Things anymore.
What helps is the fact that Of The Abyss is, all things considered, kind of simplistic. I mean, while the Demogorgon is an awesome monster and has much going on with the Upside Down in the show, in DBD he can just teleport and has an increased lunge. I can already come up with a different monster idea that can still do the same thing but with different esthetics. Perhaps some sort of wolf monster that digs holes in the ground instead of portals to another world. While in these tunnels, it can easily travel across the map, or something along those lines, thus is the portal mechanic replicated. And as for shred… well, that isn’t that unique if you ask me. Any monster can lunge far forward.
Of course, the redesign would take time. But it’s not like Behaviour doesn’t churn out skins. Plus they have done redesigns of add-ons in between DLC. Hillbilly and Leatherface got exactly that when their rework came. They would have to devote some time to it, but it certainly would not be impossible in the slightest. Plus, if they do this, they can make more skins for these new original characters. Which I know is something that the devs would love… for better or for worse.
Best would also be to just replace the Stranger Things DLC with the new one and let those who had it before get it for free. This way, those who did not have the DLC can then at least buy the characters that have these perks and power, but those who did don’t have to pay again. It would be stupid to just sell it to the ones who have it again. Instead they should just give the redesigns to the players that have it and also let them keep the skins from Stranger Things that they bought before, including the base skin for Demo, Steve and Nancy. By that point, those skins are exclusive, but not the gameplay styles they have (or the new killer’s power specifically, should I say). Of course these original “skins” would be given out for free, but these things are overpriced anyway. They should be able to give some away for free for just once.
Although I guess I do wonder if this could work. I don’t know if I am missing something about the copyright that makes this impossible. That because of that, they cannot make original characters to replace the licensed ones, that it isn’t that simple, but I do think it should be possible. They did make the code themselves and it’s not like the few concepts that would be shared could be claimed. Hell, Hillbilly is clearly based on Leatherface, yet they didn’t get a lawsuit for that. But if I am missing something, by all means, tell me. Best to know that I’m wrong about this idea then just keep up some ignorance.
But if this does work, I hope one of the devs sees this idea. It would be cool to see it actually happen. And, most importantly, it would allow players to still play this playstyle if they weren’t there before. Not as the Demogorgon, but at least as some killer character. And who knows? Maybe the characters they come up with are very cool.

I, think they have a contract that tells them to not do this ######### so, i don't think they can.

If that is true, I wonder why they were so desperate for a license that is technically the weakest they have ever pursued. But yeah, presumably they would just Reskin the map if they could.

Money, stranger things is something pretty big, plus i think that this part of the contract its the same for every license, but the only reason they did its money, which is the same reason the license will be no more in the first place

I thought it was for their game project they were working on?

Exactly which ultimately would give them money, if they decided to not break the licenses with dbd, well they could probably not gain much money from the game they're creating (and still this's all speculation)

I guess it was indeed made for Netflix, and thus part of the contract. Although I do wonder why they would specifically say no to do that.

I have my doubts about whether the contract can reach that far, though.
While the visual design and concept of the Demogorgon and the likenesses of Steve and Nancy are Netflix property, I don't know if that applies to the actual gameplay elements, since Netflix had nothing to do with their creation.
It may be possible for them to reskin and reflavour the whole package and return it to the store. And I saw some posts on the forums suggesting that they're going to do that with the perks, at least.

Yeah, I’d think so too. I mean, at that point, it is just taking inspiration from what they made before.

They could, but it’d be a pretty big waste of their development time.
Why work on a reskin and programming for characters that a majority of the community already owns? It would make more financial sense to BHVR to continue working on brand new content.
A reskin of Hawkins is all I’m expecting, and even that could be a longshot.

The reason to do it seems obvious to me. To sell it to new players.

It’s not obvious because it would require a lot of work to reskin/animate 3 characters just to sell it to a minority. A brand new chapter can be sold to the whole player base.

It depends what the contract is. Every contract may differ. And it's a NDA thing, so we cannot know.

I think they should just leave it be. Who knows, maybe one day if BHVR grows even bigger, they'll be able to obtain that license back.

Good point, that would be the best anyway. Stranger Things is making its own game now, but that doesn’t mean that they won’t lend the license again after some time. I am curious about that game too…
