Do you think mentality like this is OK to have?

I played with my friend against a Demo. Demo liked to camp and tunnel and mainly just used his portals for that only. When my friend died he found out this was a small streamer. My friend was very mad. He mained killer but got bored of it cuz he won most of hiss matches and let all survivors go, because he always wants both sides to have fun.

After went to his chat this streamer said and I quote "I spent 100 dollars on this game. Why should I care about other people."

And that's my question - is it OK to have mentality like this streamer?

Wow, didn't expect post like this, but thank you nonetheless. I've been playing dbd since July 2020 and my love is bigger than my hatred too.

This thing was a big deal for my friend that's why I made this post.

This guy is very awful human and his playstyle didn't bother me, just this statement.

@A_Can_Of_Air mate, you are one of the most mature people I have ever seen in this community.

I wish you luck and happiness in everything you do.

It's not the player's responsibility to ensure other people's enjoyment. However, it is the Developers responsibility to ensure every players enjoyment. And allowing one player to completely prevent another player from being able to play a game through camping/tunneling needs to be addressed by the Developers. Decisive Strike and Borrow Time, do not and have never, fixed this issue. Killer players are literally rewarded for using low-skill/no-skill yellow rank tactics and toxicity to ruin another players experience.

I think it's OK to camp tunnel if the game is over and you're losing hard, but not at the start of the game

Pretty normal in our world. Very unfortunate. People only care for themselve, beeing selfish is modern. Just look around here in this forum and you will get a good idea on how things are going. "I dont care for other peoples fun, they dont care about mine aswell" is the No. 1 Quote you read here. Very shortsided and ignorant, but thats the way it is.

Needless to say that a statement and a mentality like this is in my opinion aweful, but good luck trying to confince people like that.

  • Yeah, it's not against the rules. Nothing you can do.

I... Don't think it's right to have this mentality, in a video game outside of a competitive scene, where the primary objective is everyone having fun, but I can't force my own way of thinking onto other people.

I just accept there are always people like this in every multiplayer game- from Paladins to DBD to Minecraft servers. Some people will always play to ruin the enjoyment of others, and despite how ######### I think that is I can't make them play how I think is fair. It breaks no in-game rules so I deal with it and move to another game- I don't like being tilted at one specific match for over 5 minutes unless someone did something really bad (like call me a slur in endgame chat, yes I remember each and every one of you ❤️).

I make it my aim to prioritise fun, which is ironic because my main killer is pyramid head and he's considered one of the least fun killers to face. I want everyone to leave a game with Bloodpoints, at least one funny moment, and I want them to be able to play the game.

I agree and disagree. If you have a low-skill tactic you can fall back on to make up for mistakes, do you really learn anything. However, on the other side of that, playing Killer has a very high stress level because there are so many things you are juggling, far more than survivor, so getting frustrated and falling back to those tactics is understandable.

In the context of PvP, I'd say it's an okay mentality to have as long as no actual rulebreaking is involved.

That streamer is most likely using the price tag he's paid as a cover up for some really bad experiences that he's hurting from, but is too proud to allow people to discover that, so hides behind a shield of greed because he would rather be seen as some tough individual who doesn't care, rather than someone who is emotionally vulnerable.

It's a miserable existence to live, but if he dwells in it, then you already know he's never going to be truely enjoying the game.

As long as they aren't hypocrites that say stuff like that and then starts crying when their opponent(s) give them the same treatment, I'm neutral to it honestly.

Sure better than the people that make "playing for salt" their way to play. Or the ones so far gone that do that and somehow managed to convince themselves that's not just allowed, but some sort of noble or justified thing.

People are free to play the game how they want. No one is required to play in a way favorable for your opponents in a pvp game.

  • By the way... you never said what your friend said to the streamer.

So I feel like DBD does a good job of taking the potential anger, hate, and cruelty from the real world and puts it into the game world,

So your friend might have just saved some little kitten life, just by taking the hit in the game.

I agree with that streamer. You are responsible of your own enjoyment if you rely on the other for that that mean the game is not for you.

I don't think not caring about people is a good attitude to have, but in this context, your friend actively hunted the streamer's game down to vent their frustration. I'm not surprised the streamer was rude in response. No, I don't think being rude is okay either, but I understand why they did that. If someone searched for me outside of a game just to complain at me about what I did in the game, I'd be pretty defensive too.

    That mentality in real life? No its horrible and sadly it is becoming a movement these days ;_;

That mentality in a video game? Yah it fine. People can play how they want.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but streamers get a ton of people going into their streams to rant to them about camping, tunneling, perk selection, etc... and streamers don't have to put up with it. Its pretty lame going into someone stream to release frustration.

So this streamer is probably tired of people like your friend moaning about xyz and boils it down to 'I can play how I want go away', and they are not wrong. They can play how they want.

People are responsible for their own emotions. This includes happiness. If a video game makes mad then put it down and walk away ^^ That would be my advice to your friend.

I think it's an ok mentality to have, although I don't condone going out of your way to make other people's games miserable for no good reason (which is subjective at the end of the day).

At the end of the day regardless of the role you play but especially as killer or in solo queue survivor, you are on your own and you should prioritise your fun over others. Especially as killer I am under no obligation to play in a way deemed as fun or nice and I can play however I want to in order to have what I consider fun.

It would be nice if people in this community cared about the other side but I have learned very quickly that having empathy in this game doesn't help as no one cares. Everyone's standards are different so no one can please each other so it's best to just watch your own back.

I'd have said a lot worse to your friend. Harassing people after a game is worse than using an unfun yet dev approved playstyle. Unless the person has cheated then they should be left alone.

Nothing is stoping them for playing like #########, so a lot of killers play like that nowadays. We just have to deal with until/if the devs ever decide to do something

    Pfh. that's something.

I once versed a streamer who i didn't even realize it was a Streamer until i checked the profile out,

Apparently My Ruin / Whispers / Corrupt / Stbfl Trapper is wrong and Whispers doesn't reveal survivors like that...

He still hasn't tried to apologize yet, =D

Edit: Forgot to mention that i was live and reading my own chat while Playing trapper. (had to add some sort of context)

It was on Oni's map. Sanction of Wrath, had a amazing 3 gen set up and corrupt on other side. so of course i protect my side and had 95% of my traps on this side,

out of all 4 teammates however... he was the most useless one, hiding and doin' nothing the whole game, a Immersed Claudette (Yes...he was immerse... the whole game..)

Harassing streamers on their stream -- is great for streamers. It creates Drama. Everyone loves drama!

i really don't see a problem with how the streamer responded, and I feel like some people are reading WAY to much into this. Killers and Survivors are allowed to play how they want, whether that involves camping, genrushing and everything in-between. Utilizing a strategy in a video game does not make one an awful human being. Harassing someone on their twitch stream because they are doing something their opponent deems "unfun", seems a lot worse to me than having a staring contest with a creature that ironically has no eyes.

I mean he's right he bought the game. Unless you feed him, provide him shelter, you pay the bills, you bought him the game and system then he can choose how to play. And also why bother the streamer? Your friend could've just gotten over it but instead you went and antagonize him.

Even if the mentality was awful, it is nobody's business to dicate whether it is okay or not. That being said, I was expecting a bad mentality. I think your mentality that someone cannot play the game how they want is more messed up than theirs. And that is okay, but wow, the nerve of you to unironically post this with no shame. Slightly disturbing.

To anyone reading this when was the last time a survivor made the game fun for the killer? Why is it only the killers job to make sure the survivor has fun, but not the survivors job to make sure the killer has fun?

Yeah, I've never understood the "I paid for access to this digital space, and so did you, so only my enjoyment of this space is important!" argument. There's such a thing as sharing the space with other people.

I should've clarified, but he came to stream just to ask why did he camp and tunnel. I don't know if calmly asking a person why he did that is a harassment, but many things are considered harassment nowadays.

He blew up only because of that statement.

i genuinely do try to make sure the killer has fun, i dont know about others but in my opinion a good challenging chase is the most fun part of this game. its like a back and forth between two consciousnesses that pushes them both to do their best, and i love that about this game, unironically i love a good chase because everything else in the game is just so braindead.

  • Jasix
    Jasix Member Posts: 1,245

Uhh no - some of us loathe drama and try to keep our streams and community positive and drama free. I have never tunneled or camped but that doesn't stop some salty survivors from coming in and screaming I tunneled or camped them - when in reality I wasn't camping but rather chasing their idiot teammate who thought engaging in a chase around the hook was a good idea. I had to create a completely different forum account because of the drama forum members would cause on my stream - and by drama I mean just come in and say racist and homophobic stuff every stream. So please - learn not to make broad generalizations about people - they are generally not fair or based in reality.

I don't mind survivors or killers coming to my streams and stating their opinion - let me make that clear. Stating your opinion is vastly different than ranting like an uneducated bigoted fool though. Heck some of my favorite followers are people I have killed or who have killed me.

I don't see why not. This game is pretty toxic at its core. It's more difficult as a killer main, since most of the time, it's just you vs them. So that type of mentality is easier to fall into.

But then, it's not my responsibly, or my job, to see that others enjoy the match. If I want to put in the extra effort, so be it. At the same time, I don't expect other people to go out of their way so that I enjoy the match. We get what we put in.

  • Munqaxus
    Munqaxus Member Posts: 2,752

Tunneling, meaning you either face-camp or proxy-camp a survivor you hooked, so you can down them immediately after they get off the hook, to down them again because they only have 1 health state and aren't able to hide or juke from you because of the blood and noise. Then you do it again to get them out of the game.

That is by the very definition low-skill. It's easy, it takes no effort and it tremendously rewards you as Killer for doing it. Instead of learning to actually play the game, the killer is exploiting a tactic that every killer learns and masters in yellow-ranks. It's the easiest thing you can do as killer and it's a crutch for actually learning more advanced tactics and techniques. Why learn to mind-game when you can tunnel someone out of the game in the first minute. Why learn the intricacies of your killers power if you win the game after tunneling someone out of it in the first minute. You can basically be an M1 killer on any killer, because there's no skill needed after that.

Lets face it, this game is won at 3 gens, 3 survivors. And tunneling is a nice easy way for killers to exploit a yellow-rank mechanic to undeservedly rank up you red-ranks, where there are killer players that actually deserve that rank, because they took the time to learn the game instead of exploit it.

Well, I play Overwatch quite a bit and i've never asked the other team "Geez! Couldn't ya just let us get the payload halfway so it'd be fun for us?!?" And I've never been asked that either.

no one is responsible for the enjoyment other people get from a game.

as long as he doesn't break any actual rules, he's allowed to play as he pleases.

so yes, it is ok to have this mentality.

I wonder why people play DbD if they're morally aghast at 75% of DbD gameplay. Like... don't play DbD if you can only enjoy DbD under very specific match conditions?

In the context of a competition, yes. It's not your job to make sure everyone has a good time, especially because "fun" is subjective, and people who use that excuse really mean "let me score some points and/or win, even though you're just better than me".

The problem is that people confuse that mentality with the "actively going out of your way to make your competition's experience as miserable as possible" mentality. This one is not OK to have.

IRL, no, this mentality is not OK to have. Fortunately, the vast majority of humans are born with empathy, a perfectly normal human emotion that's an evolutionary advantage to the alternative.
