Blowing Skill Checks Because You Hopped Off A Gen
Anyone who's played Survivor long enough has been there. You hop off a gen and instantly get a skill check, so you automatically "miss" it because you are not able to even attempt to hit it.
But difficult skill checks for Overcharge are able to completed even if the survivor immediately gets off a gen.
So should regular skill checks change? Should Survivors be able to complete normal skill checks that pop up the second they hop off the gen, just like they do with Overcharge?
If you're a 50/50 Killer/Survivor, your opinion carries more weight for me, as Killer and Survivor mains each have a bias.

I play both sides. I absolutely hate when I'm getting off the gen, and the notification sound happens right as I'm getting off and nothing pops up and it blows the gen and counts as a missed skill check. You would think the chances of this happening are slim and rare, but it literally happens to me maybe every other match.

Yes and no. What i mean by that lets say the killer is coming but a skill check pop at the same time you let go you will be stuck in the animation and you can get hit or grab.

I barely play survivor and always thought that mechanic was stupid. I only do my daily, more or less, and this happens quite often to the point where if I want to leave and I am not being pressured by a killer, I wait for a skill check before I go.
As a killer, I see it happening to other people literally all the time.

Agreed. It happens a lot to me, too. I'm wondering if that was an intentional mechanic put in by the devs to aid to the Killer, or if it truly is just random.

I've not been stuck in an animation when I had to hit an Overcharge skill check off of the gen. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding. Could you please clarify?

I dunno if the game still does this but it used to be that if you tapped a generator that had overcharge on it and ran off, the skill check would follow you and you could hit the skill check while on the run.
Alternatively you could miss the skill check and cause your survivor to explode to intimidate the killer.

This is still the case.
However, if a regular Skill Checks pops up right when you let go of a Gen, it is just auto-failed. This is in the game for years.

I've said before they should reverse how regular and overcharge skill checks work. In that way overcharge also becomes an anti-gentapping perk (not just an anti-noob perk) and I don't tell the killer where I am immediately when checking for ruin

That's interesting. I'm glad you commented. I can understand that maybe this was intentionally designed this way to aid Killers (especially from the perspective of the OG DBD days). But if you barely play Survivor and still find it stupid, that's telling.

Agreed.
Another favorite of mine is to hide behind a Gen against BBQ. Aaand, Gen explodes because of an auto-failed Skill Check.

Yeah this “mechanic” is so dumb and really unfair. If you let go before the skillcheck has even appeared on your screen, you shouldn’t explode the gen. You can’t possibly play around it or account for it because it’s random and not possible for you to hit something that doesn’t exist yet. And sometimes you have to let go of a gen quickly to avoid being grabbed or insta downed.

Yeah it's annoying or how one always pops up during a hook sound so you cannot hear the audio cue.
Best time to let go of a gen is immediately after you make a skill check.

This mechanic is fine the way it is. You shouldn't be able to hit a skill check while running away. It's the exact same as if you were startled while repairing something and jumping made you break it instead.
If anything, the Overcharge skill check should work like normal skill checks.

Except the survivor didn't do anything to warrant their generator being blown up. They had no opportunity to avoid it.

Being startled is one thing. Having no opportunity to try is another. I have been startled and succeeded a skill check. I have been startled and failed. That is the point: to test me. Auto-failing a Survivor is broken.

Its so frequent, my noob self legit thought it was intentional and I would (and still to this day when possible) stay on a gen till I get a skill check.
Don't swap from/to a toolbox without a skill check first either.

Imagine a small progress bar on the HUD that quickly fills and depletes once per second: over and over.
The more full it is, the higher your chance of spawning a skill check. So if you need to get off a gen, time it for when this bar is low to minimize your chance of blowing the gen upon release!
Sure, this is a bandaid fix, but could also be nice to have some control over such things. It also gives you something to look at while working the gen. 80 cycles = finished gen!

I'm a killer main, and I support the idea of skill checks persisting when leaving a gen. From the killer side, it's cleaner too - less noise, which can mean the difference when listening for survivors even with chase music going.

That's a good point, especially when you're chasing a survivor who runs near an in-progress gen. The working Survivor hears your terror radius, quickly gets off the gen, and you go to that noise thinking maybe the Survivor you were chasing hopped a window.

I hate that. It's just so annoying. If anything swap it with how Overcharge works. Make it stronger against gen tapping.

But yea that is messed up happens to me sometimes and have seen it happen to other survivors while I'm playing killer and survivor

Feels like it’s intentional. I started playing right after Legion dropped and it was never this bad. Curious to hear from Day 1 players for confirmation, or to let me know if I’m mistaken. Years ago if that happened, it was rare. Maybe you get that 1 or 2 a day, if you were not careful. Now, it feels like a 40% chance it’ll happen if you don’t wait for a skill check first. Last year if you got off abruptly while moving your character, it would get triggered I used to circumvent it by making sure my joystick was in neutral before I let go of the button. Worked 99% of the time. Now, I can’t even do that any more. Also, it feels like if you let go in the killer’s terror radius your chances of blowing the gen increase even more. Absurd.
I always wanted to create a thread, calling this suspect ######### out- but never got around to it.

This literally happens to me once a game, absolutely hate it.
Would be nicer if they changed it to be more like the overcharge skill checks.

They actually fixed this a long time ago, then reverted it because people were "gen-tapping" to avoid (old) Ruin, even though it was demonstrably slower than just doing the gen through normal Ruin checks.
Then they changed Ruin and never reimplemented the change.
It's annoying, and I have personally seen it cost matches from both sides of the game. Losing because of RNG feels terrible in any PvP setting, and I wholeheartedly wish they would address it. The game already has enough RNG, and they've already shown it can be fixed.

I don't know if anyone else gets this, but sometimes a skillcheck will pop up just slightly after I let go of the generator and I'm finishing up the animation.

Letting go of a gen or stop healing causes the action to be shut down.... therefore if a skillcheck has started and you let go should cause you to fail the skillcheck due to you not working on whatever caused the skillcheck to happen in the first place

As a Survivor it's pretty stupid to have those happen, especially since I run Stake Out and use it like a perimeter radar. Oh look, I'm only abot 20 percent done and the Killer is near, let me just step off and start sneak or tell the Killer Im right here. That...that works to.
As a Killer, I literally cannot tell if this happens or not, so I don't really k ow how much "value" I get from it

But that's not what happens with Overcharge, and in this instance you get off the gen and then you get the skill check. You stopped the action prior to getting the skill check. The skill check either should never proc when you're off of it, or if it does, you should be able to complete it.

You used to be able to get those skill checks last second and be fine. Not sure when or why they changed it.

As I said previously Overcharge is bugged right now and allows you to complete the skillcheck while on the move and it shouldn't
The Devs aren't that concerned about it though so it only makes it worse....Why don't you think no one uses it

So let me ask you all something.....
What if I use Pop... wait till the last second to use it should it work?
Or if I'm kicking a gen and stop at the last second should it blow up and start regressing?
Or if I go to hook someone and stop at the last second should the survivor be hooked? (I know you can't stop the hooking animation... I'm just saying)

As far as I am aware (an OG DBD plater or mod would have to weigh in), that is not a bug. It is an intentional mechanic.
But even if it were bugged, does that negate the opinion that most of the commenters have? No. The way overcharge works is merely an illustration of how regular skill checks should work.

That is not an apples to apples comparison.
You are not being randomly and unexpectedly punished in any of those situations. You choose to stop an action, and the action stops. That's all that happens.
On this issue, the survivor chooses to stop an action. The action stops. But unlike the Killer, it doesn't end there. The Survivor then gets penalized with triggering a loud noise notification and regressing the gen. And they have no way to stop, predict, or counter it.

Removing auto-failing skill checks that proc after a survivor has already gotten off a gen is not an advantage. It is what should be.

You shouldn't be hitting any generator based skill check if you aren't on the gen. That's kind of the point of it being a generator based skill check. You leave, you fail.
(For reference i have played both side on console worth 700 odd hours and only recently moved to PC so not enough time to 50/50 both.)

Which is why you shouldn't be getting a generator skill check if you are off a gen. As you said, the point of skill checks is to be a test during a generator repair. If you stop repairing the generator, then you should not be given a skill check that instantaneously auto-fails. You have no way of even attempting to succeed, because the game won't allow you to try because the server recognizes you are off of the gen. And yet, it still procs a skill check. That is broken.
I agree with you that generator skill checks should happen while working on a gen. I disagree with "You leave, you fail." You should only fail if you miss the skill check.
The game should never proc a skill check after you cease repair, but since it does do that, then the survivor needs the option to hit it. Maybe they'll hit it, maybe they'll fail. But the result will be based on the survivor's skill. And that's how it should be.

I've had them pop like that too, i always just put it down to bad timing when i was releasing someone being healed or repairing seeing as it isn't consistently happening for me when i leave either of those actions.
