The only way I could see boon totems being balanced
Boon totems would simply be too strong if they weren’t revealed to the Killer, so my hunch is that they will be revealed to the Killer after a certain amount of seconds possibly based on their perceived power level.
Ex. A boon totem that mitigates generator regression might be revealed after 90 seconds. But a boon totem that deactivates a random hex without having to cleanse the specific totem for as long as it the boon stands might be revealed after 30 seconds.

Maybe you get an indicator status effect like the cursed effect for survs once you experience the effect of the Boon as killer.
and boon totems might get revealed like Hex:Plaything. The killer sees the aura of the boon totem when around x meters of it.
3 -
Yeah. That would work too. the Killer will need some type of Aura reading mechanic to help find it. Killers just don’t have enough time in a match to look for a totem they can’t see

Am I the only one that thinks Boon totems won't affect the entire game, still? Especially if their perks? I really think they will only affect the one survivor. I could be wrong though, who knows.
I just really doubt they will be anything as powerful as mitigate regression. I could easily be wrong though.
2 -
Can someone explain what is boon totem and how it/they currently works?
0 -
We don’t know yet. They are a new type of survivor perks. The surv has to use a dull totem to make a boon totem (like Hex totems but blue flames). It is likely getting introduced with one of the next updates, maybe even the very next midchapter update.
1 -
I think it was stated that the effect will benefit the surv team? But I am not sure if that was official info or leaked info or merely speculation.

A totem to mitigate generator's regression when you can simply repair it in a minute even when hex:ruin is working? Devs should focus on gen rush problem first. Like rolling back ruin to it's earlier version, for example. Then this new boon totem mechanic colud at least be justified.
0 -
I confirmed that it will benefit the survivor team, so don't worry about that being a leak
7 -
Can we please just wait until we know the effects of boon totems before we start complaining about them?
8 -
Thx for the confirmation ❤️
This is the DbD community. Complaining without any reason is part of it.
3 -
Everyone: boon totems will ruin the game
First boon totems introduced: Increases the aura reading range by 5m for each survivor within 3m of the totem.
9 -
I mean.. people also said that Jill‘s Counterforce perk will be OP and destroy the game. And that with all info already revealed.
Every survivor nowadays has this one perk. It is known.
3 -
Remember how Flashbang and Counterforce and Blast Mine and Smash Hit and Power Struggle and Built to Last and Desperate Measures and Soul Guard and Blood Pact and For the People and Any Means Necessary and Breakout and Second Wind and Cameraderie and Inner Strength and Head On and Distortion and Breakdown and Deliverance were all going to be incredibly OP perks that would change the meta as we knew it and would make killer lives hell?
Also remember Lucky Break and Fast Track? Because I didn't
8 -
Yes. I remember almost every of those complaints. Except Built to Last and Smash Hit. For Felix I don’t remember such reactions at all but for Yun-Jin, wasn’t it Fast Track? Or probably both.
2 -
I forgot Fast Track, but no it was definitely about "Smash Hit is a guaranteed chase ender BHVR what are you doing you hate all killers and want all M1s to perish". Slightly overdramatic recreation but still.
1 -
you also forgot Lucky Break
7 -
Then it was both. I definitely remember the complaints of genrush potential of the perk.
i gotta say I would be very disappointed if there wasn’t such a bizarre reaction to one of the upcoming survivor perks. They are part of the hype by now.
1 -
I blame being sleep deprived but yes I did
2 -
I don't know how anyone can argue that this is a good idea unless you're a survivor main. Just the idea of them entertaining a survivor hex totem is just bonkers to me.
I was joking two years ago that they might as well let the killer cleanse the totem because ruin op but they took it literally lmao.
4 -
Lucky Break, especially when combined with Iron Will (a super-strong perk by itself) is ridiculously strong. When I play killer, I'm happy beyond belief that so few people seem to realize that. I actually ran into a Claudette on the Game map a night ago running that combo, and it took one pallet stun for her to vanish into the ether like it was nothing.
2 -
You literally don’t know how it will work and what kind of effects those perks may have??
0 -
That's the thing. All the perks listed are good in their own right but haven't ever managed to displace the meta and regardless of the change made have had no real impact on the game.
1 -
I still don't think boon totems are gonna be good for the game but we will see.
0 -
Well, I suppose that goes to prove I have the memory capabilities of a goldfish. Thanks for the reminder!

Survivors:we want more secondary objectives.
BHVR: more objectives eh? 🤔
Ok we can do that, we introduce boon totems so the killers have another objective 🤦🏻♂️
When you know jack sh1t about your own game, typical BHVR logic right there 👍
1 -
Boon totems won't get used. most of survivor perks such as DH/BT/Iron will are permanent perks. Only DS and Old MoM were one-time use perks and those got majorly changed. Unbreakable sometimes get used but not that much.
Survivors have almost never used perks that get taken away from them from other side. Its mostly been a killer doing that from lack of helpful perks. Just look at other one-time use perks like Lucky break, barely gets used. So unless there is boon totem that gives endurance effect, It will not get used.

This is always my favorite part of each Chapter. Players who stretch their imagination into Perk-Combos where 3 Survivors have to have specific Perks to make something unlikely happen. Reality: No Survivor Perk from the past 3-4 years is actually used often. They are just Bloodweb-Clutter and my bet would be that this is the same with Boon-Totems.
My favorite so far was Fast Track - basically a BNP, if your team is dying. And nobody could ever answer me why the Survivor should not bring an actual BNP and use the Perk Slot for something good.
And this is the only use of Fast Track I have seen since its release (outside of Adepts):
A Yui with 27 Tokens who let my friend (who got chased) die to search for the Hatch instead of using those 27 Tokens on the last Gen. (one was finished 50%, but, to be fair, she probably did not know about it, since she was Solo)

Here: they make existing meta perks boon totems so you can cleanse BT, DS, Unbreakable, Dead Hard etc. and remove them from the match.
Not saying I think they will or should do this but I’m sure plenty of people would be happy about boon totems if this was how they worked, lmao.
1 -
I think you're right and it's an overreaction by the community as usual, people should be hoping these are good in some way so it can shake the meta up a bit, people worrying about ######### like this and turning into a bigger deal is exactly why this game is starting to grow stale and it's why the meta has been the same for survivors for like 3 years now, all while the killer meta has shifted in the past year in my opinion, I'm honestly hoping they're meta shifting from how strong they are with the excuse that the survivor has to take away time to create the totem and they're destroyable by the killer, if people would just let things play out before they overreact we could have really nice things for both survivor and killer.

I just hope that boon totems don't detract too much from a Killer's objective. Killers already have to keep an eye on seven generators and four survivors, and adding another objective on to that seems unnecessary.
1 -
Whether or not Boon Totems will be too powerful or not will depend entirely on the effect it results in.
If BHVR knows what they're doing, then the effects of Boon Totems should be relatively niche. If they affect the entire team because only one Survivor brings them, while the other 3 Survivors have full suites of perks, then the Boon Totem can't get away with being too powerful, otherwise the instant momentum the Survivors could acquire would make it very, very difficult for the Killer to be successful. Against competent Survivors, Killer is already pretty difficult.
Something I don't see a lot of people discussing though is how the concept of Boon Totems is a buff to Hex: Undying, since if the Survivors try to activate a Boon perk before cleansing Undying, you'll be able to see where they're activating the perk.
Ultimately, though, I'm not that fond of Boon Totems. A lot of the secondary objectives that Survivors need to do can be brute forced through so long as at least one person is on a gen at all times. Killer having to outsmart and outplay a group constantly AND go Totem hunting...if these totems have legitimately powerful effects, it's really going to suck.
1 -
I don't need to know how it works. How else would it work it's a totem for survivors lmao.
0 -
Killers already have a hard time at high MMR, imagine adding boon totems with stronger powers than the usual perks...
Killers already have no time to defend generators but now they will have to find & take care of a totem (4 totems ?) 😂.
It's hilarious to see where this game is going.

I've been going off of this for my Boon Totem concepts, just something I put together based on logic and what forums members thought about Boon Totems, could be completely off.
- While cleansing a Boon Totem, press the Active Ability Button to Sanctify it, transforming it into a Boon Totem. Only one Boon Totem perk can be equipped at a time.
- When under the effects of a Boon Totem, Killers suffer from the Blessed status effect. This status effect serves as an opposite to the Cursed status effect, notifying the Killer that a Boon Totem is active. Killers can see the Auras of Boon Totems within 24m.
- The Killer can perform the Dismantle action (6s) to deactivate a Boon Totem.
0 -
And this attitude is why I have so much fun here :)
no you have no idea what the effects or the actual implementation are. Or how the killer actually will be able to interact/counter them. You are just assuming how it could be and already judging it just by your assumption.
0 -
I don't need to know the effects. You can assume it's strong if the killer has to worry about it, That's all hex perks. They're strong if left unattended.
Hate to break your bubble but BHVR has a track record of not putting any innovative mechanics and if they do It all revolves around preexisting mechanics(Blue totem very creative). EGC was the only thing that changed the game somewhat differently but the game stayed relatively the same.
1 -
Personally I just plan to run Undying, Haunted Ground, Retribution, and Thrill of the Hunt the week that perk releases. Can't use boons if there's no totems 5head.
1 -
Watch the survivors being able to bless a Hex:totem to kill the hex effect and get the boon effect.
ggez babykiller.
1 -
Still dont get that surv needs the side objectives not killers.
1 -
I saw someone commenting a cool idea under a youtube video, that after the totem is lit the effect works like a candle, hence timed, so after x amount of time the totem destroys itself and ending the effect
0 -
Just like how killer totems are too strong without being revealed to the survivor? Oh wait, they aren't, and we need to equip perks so that we might find them. Gotcha.
0 -
The one way I see this working is if Boons have strong effects, but can only be applied to Hex Totems, transforming them into a Boon Totem, but leaving the Hex effect active on top of that.
Then the Killer has to make the choice of sabotaging their own Hex to be rid of the Boon, or leave it up to use Devour Hope or Ruin with a downside.
0 -
I think personally boons should be basically a 5th perk selected randomly
0 -
You don't need perks to find totems, you only need a pair of eyes, ears and some logic 😉
Their spawns are so commen that you know where to look after only a few matches
1 -
Nah, I can barely find someone of them even with small game. I definitely need a perk, bruh.
0 -
Hahaha yeah i believe you 🤔😜🤣
If even with small game is hard better use small game, detective hunch, counterforce and a rainbow map 🤣
