The "Blendette" conversation
So recently on the bird app a discussion was started around the idea that the term "blendette" is inherently racist. This prompted a lot of black dbd players to chime in agreeing with the idea. I kind of wanted to gage what people in the forums thought and gain a bit of perspective.
I'm white so I don't have the perspective necessary for that racial lense. My thoughts though is that the term is just a byproduct of community memes that have persisted though the years. Jokes like blendette, meghead, baby Dwight, Nea being the entity have existed for literal years and it's weird to me this is being brought up now. I'm not saying it's not an issue but I am saying that the joke existed for a reason and I don't think it was intended with racial hate In mind because if it was that would mean the entire community is racist and that's just not true. I want to remind people to stay on topic and if this goes haywire I'll ask for the thread to be closed.

Blendette is the term because she camouflaged within the environment the best in prior versions. Nothing more.

I've heard a TON of racist spewings in my life. How is blendette racist? cauldette that blends in. Yes some people in this world will be harder to see at night but it's life.

Okay, so the character is named Claudette? Correct? Now follow me here, this is apparently where people get lost: we replaced the "Claud" part with "blend." Because she, get this... She blends in.
Hope that helps.

I would be legitimately interested in hearing the reasons people think it's racially charged, because it does seem like a reach from where I'm sitting- but I'm not black myself, so it's totally possible that I'm missing some kind of context from that.
Claudette's skin isn't even the only reason she's good for the blending, too, she's also small, quiet, and has dark cosmetics. I'm not sure if that's been discussed in the conversations you mentioned, though.

Blendette comes from a time where you could play New Moon offerings and fog had a much greater effect. Combined with her P3 outfit and dark maps if Claudette did not want you to see her, you were not seeing her. If she had Iron Will you weren't hearing her either.
Just remember if Claudette didn't exist, they'd complain about not having representation. The only winning move you can make is not to play.

I always thought it was one of those harmless dbd jokes that players and content creators alike acknowledge for a laugh. You know, Quentin and Nea being goblins, Dwights being cowards who hide in lockers, Megs being...Megs
I mean search the word blendette on YT and you'll see tons and tons of content creators using it in that way. Far be it from me to say what people should/shouldn't be offended by but I don't think when people say blendette they are being harmful or inciting hatred of any kind.
It's best not to project intentions onto people who say it, since most would see it as a dbd meme. A funny name for a character wearing certain clothes and the memes surrounding that character being hard to see.
Also worth adding, this is from the DBD wiki:

Thank you really clears things up. I'm sure the literal hundreds of tweets today between hundreds of players including well known content creators never thought of that.
There issue argues that other characters can blend just as well who aren't black but they weren't singled out. The joke instead went onto at the time the only black character. The idea being that it was purely because of her skin colour and not because she was the best choice for blending in.
Atleast that's what I have gathered.

I think this is where my stance lies, however I find it interesting that that many people had an issue with something I never even thought was an issue.

Sounds like a certified Twitter moment.

It really is but I do think there's a little value in trying to atleast think on it for even a moment. It was interesting and fascinating in a sort of 'can't look away' kind of vibe

I feel like their not aware it's not specifically her skin but her clothes as well. Before the RE update you couldn't see dwight in P3 on autohaven for the switch. It's not only claudette, it's just most people do it with claudette.

Average twitter discussion.
No it's not racist and just because you're white doesn't mean you can't have your opinion, because this isn't even about race. Blendette has barely anything to do with her skintone. It's the fact that she has ridiculously dark cosmetics. What's up with the brown recolor of her default shirt? She objectively has the darkest selection of cosmetics in the game.
Zarina is widely considered to be blendette 2.0 and she's clearly not black. It's not about skin tone it's all about the clothes. This isn't about race.

you should never read a twitter rant from some shut-in activist manchild and give it serious consideration

Where's the harm in just discussing this, even if we quickly come to the conclusion that it's probably not a problem? I don't see why so many people are reacting so strongly to the mere idea of discussing this topic at all, it seems perfectly reasonable to at least hear out the arguments in good faith.
0 -
Because the people willing to make these arguments are the opposite of reasonable, and might attract the attention of gaming journalists
2 -
I don't really know what the relevance of gaming journalists is, so moving on from that...
How do you know the arguments aren't reasonable if you react so strongly to the mere concept of the discussion? Aren't you worried you might be over-correcting and risking missing a real problem because you won't even entertain the mere possibility of one existing?
0 -
It's not possible that this topic is creating a real problem. Everyone who's played killer for 3 matches knows a P3 Claudette blends in really well.
People making an argument are just doing it to sate their crusader complex
2 -
I'm pretty sure you're right, but isn't it possible that there's some context we might be missing? It's not harmful to entertain the notion and see if there's a possibility there might be something up here.
1 -
LOL just trying to find racism in everything is racist by itself. If Blendette was white these same people would not even think about racism, which tells you a lot about how their minds work.
7 -
Some people do say she blends because of her darker skin and that rubs people the wrong way. She isn’t the only survivor who can blend in
