Grades ONLY represent the time someone played since the last reset.
It's not a reference for skill.

Your grade has absolutely no effect on matchmaking
Matchmaking is done with SBMM (Skill Based Matchmaking), also known as MMR (Matchmaking Rating). This is a hidden number that you cant see, how ever the game will try to match you with people with roughly the same value

It is the exact same case for me these days. I’ve been matching only level ash and bronze for two days and I’m iridescent 1 survivor. And those players I met are definitely new players. SBMM is broken 😂

Grades aren't used for matchmaking at all. They're just a reflection of how many total games that player has played this last month. It's perfectly possible for someone in a higher grade to actually be lower rated for matchmaking purposes because the lower grade opponent is just more skilled, or vice versa.
Also there's the factor that depending on how long you are waiting for a match eventually you or other survivors will get put into the next available match regardless of ratings once you've been in the queue too long. The system doesn't want people waiting an inordinate amount of time, and when there's a lot of survivors waiting but not as many killers in queue at those ratings you will get survivors being put into matches after a while that are possibly mismatches with the killer or their other survivors.

I am still wondering whoever thought this would be a good idea. I show you ranks constantly on screen - but hey - they don´t matter. We use a secret number you don´t see...
Every normal person: Hmmmmm... isn´t this confusing people???
